The MarsGatti Farewell/Peace Out Thread

Yeah, I guess I was a bit harsh. Stuff like FMA was pretty good. I just think the good to bad ratio is worse in the 2000’s than it was back in the days. Maybe it’s nostalgia, but I think that with the reduced production costs, there is less of a risk if they rush something out and it tanks. Not like with animating an entire series on cel. Actually there were some pretty good series, but I’m just trying to recall them.

The best anime you have never seen is:

One Outs.

A gambling genius loses a bet and has to become a pitcher for a baseball team.
He is no real sportsman and proceeds to use Psychology and mindgames to win.

It is glorious.

M.A.S.K. was a great, but short lived cartoon. I loved the old G.I.Joe cartoons where there was always a huge battle at the end with automatic weapons but somehow no one ever got shot, LOL. The classic Transformers was awesome as well (Dinobots FTW! LOL).

My favorite cartoon of all-time (other than classic Bugs Bunny) is Ren and Stimpy.

Different note: Anyone get the new Tecmo Bowl on XBLA? Is it any good? I played the heck out of Super Tecmo Bowl on the NES, LOL. Screw Madden.

I’ve always been a huge classic cartoon fanatic. I didn’t expect anyone to know C.O.P.S. as it aired in '88, but I am pleasantly surprised!

Overall greatest show: Batman - The Animated Series
Best animation movie: Batman - Mask of the Phantasm

Yes.

No.

I watched C.O.P.S. whenever I could. I think it aired at 1pm or 2pm, and I got out of school at 3pm, so I could only watch it when school was out. I also remember watching Gummi Bears, Duck Tales, and Rescue Rangers as part of the Disney Afternoon. Followed by the old Batman with Adam West. Later on I watched Talespin and Darkwing Duck (a personal favorite). Never liked Goof Troop much or any of the newer cartoons, although the early Gargoyles were interesting.

I also enjoyed watching Knight Rider, A-Team and Chuck Norris movies in those times. Missing in Action movies were my favorite, but I also liked Delta Force, and a bunch of others he starred in.

American action movies are not what they used to be IMHO. The only good recent movie is Live Free or Die Hard. It was surprisingly good with witty dialogue and entertaining action scenes. Other than that I can’t think of any.

Return of the Joker was great because it answered many questions and featured some climactic scenes, but Mask of the Phantasm was very tragic in its own right. Tecmo - check out the movie Taken, I consider it a very old-school flick.

EDIT: Oh yeah, admit it: you all watched Sailor Moon. And you liked it. Alot.

IMO Part of the problem is that they’ve become more about special effects and ‘bigger is better’ than about personalities and dramatic tension. It’s a bit of a guilty pleasure, but I really enjoy ‘Crank’. (Though the fact that they made a sequel after that ending…) Several of the recent comic book movies have been very good - the first Tobey McGuire Spiderman, Iron Man, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and Watchmen are all well worth watching, though they’re really not that heavy on the action.

A sequence that illustrates this pretty well is Robert Rodriguez’s films:
‘El Mariachi’ 1992, ‘Desperado’ 1995, and ‘Once Upon a Time in Mexico’ 2003.

Sailor Moon was fucking awesome.

… yeah… I did…and yeah… I did… I mean i was like 8 at the time and I also watched Ronin Warriors (I don’t remember what its actually called in Japan at the moment) which was really awesome. But going back and watching Sailor Moon fansubbed as a teenager / college student… its a show that deals with some pretty heavy issues! I mean you can edit it down to cake, cats, and tiara throwing if you want, but I will always remember Sailor Moon for the depth of its character interaction, especially in S / Super S / Sailor Stars. SM and R are really all about cake, cats, aliens, tiara throwing, and having weird fantasies about older students who you were actually in love with thousands of years before… but in S / Super S / and Stars, there’s some good stuff there, some good writing, but the North American dubs are shows for 8 year olds…

Addition: You know what I love about Shari? He’s not afraid to tell you exactly what he’s thinking… EVER.

Those were entertaining. But Chuck Norris eats Tobey McGuire, Robert Downey, and Christian Bale for breakfast. Although I think recent movies lack in the action hero department, they have some of the best villians ever, like the Joker from Dark Knight and Anton Chigurh from No Country for Old Men.

Edit: I never watched Sailor Moon.

Uh oh… someone just broke out Master Chuck… this thread is about to get roundhoused!

So, who watched TinTin? If you did then you deserve a huge brofist.

I have the jayce and the wheeled warriors theme tune on mp3 if anybody wants a copy let me know

Watched and Read.

Maybe it’s a European thing… but Sailor Moon was a girls show around here.

Agreed about Return of the Joker being one of the best animated cartoon based movies. I still can’t believe they green lighted that for TV.

Ummm… last I checked I’m not a girl. On Cartoon Network is was targeted at girls but when it was first released on Fox and aired at 6:00 in the morning, it wasn’t a boy / girl show. It was just a show.

We have to remember, when the Japanese make boys vs. girls anime, those are general genres but the beauty is both genres cut into the other. Azumanga Daioh might be a show about a bunch of high school girls, but its just straight up hilarious.

And why you gotta hate on women? j/k

At post below: I was the exact opposite. I thought the first two seasons were okay but S / Super S / and Stars were better to me. It introduced me to my first lesbian couple…

I only liked the first 1-2 seasons of Sailor Moon, once it started to do with horses and mirrors it just became too corny/homo for me.

Really ?

Your kids watch shows about incest, lesbians, homosexuality, main heroes dieing, love interest getting mind controlled and violently beating and choking main heroine etc etc ?

And this scene… Jesus christ Japan why do you have to make all your characters feel so miserable.

You guys are all younger than me, I was watching G.I.Joe, He-Man, Voltron, Underdog, whatever the American name for Gatchman was, Superfriends, etc. when I was a kid.

I remember my youngest sister used to watch Sailor Moon, from the few minutes of it I saw it was awefull, LOL.

Superheroe movies are a lot better today than they used to be. Other than the first couple of Superman movies and the 1st Burton/Keaton Batman they were usually horrible. The old Hulk show wasn’t bad either, I guess (loved Lou’s cameo in the newest Ed Norton Hulk movie as the security guard).

Speaking of bad super hereo movies, anyone remember those old made-for-TV live action Spiderman movies? Horrible! LOL. How about that short-lived Flash TV show, from the mid 90’s I think, extremely cheezy, LOL.
