The King of Fighters 2002: Unlimited Match Thread

and some other were really monsters (Vanessa, Yama, Iori)

BC mode in 2k2 is really fun imo. I don’t see a problem with it, but that is just me since I like big combos. I like both KoF98 and KoF2k2 about equal, sometimes I tend to lean towards 2k2 even if I am not that good at it.

From what I read and heard a decent amount of people like 2002. Pretty much everyone agrees the backgrounds, music, and artwork was ass. The other main complaints was gameplay issues and that’s it. Sure some people prefer 98 over 2002. Hell I prefer MIRA and XI over 98. What? About 2 people said they’re interested in 2002UM because of the new work?

Of course people are so shallow as to judge a game based on how it looks. People are shallow PERIOD. Shallow about EVERYTHING. Now SNK being SNK are known for not cranking out great looking games. In OG98 they can’t even line up the character select screen. A lot of people don’t expect SNK to produce great looking games which is why so many people are impressed with KOFXII’s graphics. If ASW or Capcom did that it wouldn’t be as amazing. That being said most people who play SNK games aren’t really looking for great presentation nor play KOF because it’s so visually mind-blowing. They play KOF because they like KOF.

KoF2k2 had awesome gameplay, but yeah… the presentation for it was just poor. Everything from the backgrounds, to the artwork, to the music, to even the health bars and super bars!

So, hopefully this game will make what should of been an excellent game, into what it deserves. 2k2 + pretty presentation - NeoWave = Awesome.

Also…

Fixed. ;(

Iapetus:

I prefer 98 because it’s more varied, characters are more fun to play, there are more characters I care about, among other things. 2k2 is a faster, gimmicky, execution driven, dumbed down KOF compared to 98, so I don’t really care about it. If they manage to change those things with this game I’ll probably play it a lot, but since changing some of those things would piss off 2k2 fans they probably won’t and I’ll end up trying stuff for a while and then going back to OG '98 and UM eventually.

It looking and sounding like shit never were the main reasons why I detest the game, but the upgrades in those aspects of course make it easier to give it a second chance.

I consider 98 to be a lot more gimmicky. Fireball into running grab with Takuma? flying D kicks across the screen into not one, not two, but three DM attempts? Obviously these are low level tactics but point is, these types of gimmicks are far less common in 2k2. What about people that just sit there doing forward+C with Ralf with their eyes closed, and being satisfied at the reasonably good results against most players?

I love 98 and I love 2k2, but there’s probably more braindead things about 98 than 2k2.

Really? Have we forgotten about the MAX Mode combos that can be done with just 2 stocks for gross damage even with the per hit damage scaling?

Vanessa entered to substitute him.
I think SNK liked that boxing style but wasn’t very sure about to continue with Rick, so they move a little the style and created Vanessa in 2000.

Don’t forget Daimon’s B/D kicks and Clark’s D. All charged.

K9999 DM Moon is crazy. SNK must be nuts if they decide to change the motion to qcbx2.

I’m interested to see what are the changes in Vanessa. Did they remove the infinite?

Is there a list of changes somewhere for 2002 UM?

Gameplay changes? Not yet. Only thing people have seen is that it looks like Angel doesn’t have her infinite anymore.

I always thought that required some decent execution?

Execution is in all fighters, its just that in my view 2k2 greatly overly rewards execution over any other aspect for a good amount of the cast.

That’s not really a gimmick…that’s just a combo. I’m not sure if you can say doing an overhead (into a max combo) is a gimmick.

The gimmick, in my view, is the fact a person can mess up just once and get comboed for in excess of half a lifebar. That gimmick should be addressed by SNK and at the very least lessened/balanced.

XTG… That’s a “gimmick” in any FG with damaging combos.

And getting hit and losing 50% life isn’t a gimmick anyway.

Jhun seems to have his infinite on 2k2um.

Vanessa didnt have an infinite…it was a 100% combo (which is not the same =P)

i think a mode where you can cancel special moves into other special moves that easily is just stupid

neowave’s modes felt better is pretty much my beef with 2k2’s max mode.

Its an identical issue that Capcom players have, the whole “press 2 buttons to do the same amount of damage as a level 3 super” with less initial execution requirements. My fault for not making myself clear at first.

anti-airs are better in 98 though

edit:

Funny, I always considered OG kof games(94-2000) to be pretty. People forget the fact that those games were running in very old hardware, I think the neo geo was released in 1989, for games like 98 and 2000 running in that old hardware was very impressive for me. Also like everybody knows the games were rushed all time, the kof team had to make a new game every single year.

even now the snk of today can’t compare to the old snk graphically.
