The inevitable tier thread

Now cue gridman and jiggly with the predictable “Hawk is not low tier!”

Its okay, let people keep underrating him.

Wait, does that list posted by Maverick consider the “Old Hawk Dive” or the “New Hawk Dive?”

…cause that will change things.:nunchuck:

And how is Blanka on a lower tier than Ken? Everyone knows Blanka smacks Ken for FREE.

LOL i didnt even see sagat as S tier. Sagat is awful. Seriously.

LOL Only if the Ken player is drunk *and *high. I pound all kinds of Blankas with my Ken like they owe me money.

Real talk.

I think you guys could be right about Hawk being mid tier. He definitely is a contender for most improved character in Remix IMO.

wow sagat at the top

tweaking Mavrick’s list a little:

S: Akuma - broken, cheap

A: Dhalsim, Boxer, Claw - their basic strats work almost universally. no real “reason to lose” if they don’t offer a window.

B: Chun, Ryu, Dictator - basic strats work very well, some weaknesses.

C: Deejay, Guile, Ken, Sagat - “solid”. good, but some major weaknesses in matches.

D: Honda, Fei-Long, Zangief, T.Hawk, Blanka - “schizo”, strong vs some characters but weak against others. Often rely on a specific strat to win (e.g. getting a corner knockdown).

F: Cammy - “just not scary”

Broken:
Akuma (just barely broken)

Top:
Claw (replaces Dhalsim as the top most IMO)
Dhalsim (still top, but slightly nerfed)
Boxer (still dangerous, but also slightly nerfed, esp throw range and damage)
Ryu (higher than Chun thanks to her nerfs and Fake Hadoken)
Chun Li (lots of tiny nerfs, but still a viable top tier character)

Mid:
Ken (lots of good buffs, but not quite top tier yet)
Dee Jay (still solid plus a couple of strong buffs)
Sagat (still unsure, but not as strong as O.Sagat for sure)
Guile (couple of great buffs, but still has a tough time vs top tier)
Dictator (couple of nice buffs, but still loses in the corner to just about everybody)
Honda (buffs and nerfs equalized to keep him in the same spot IMO)
Hawk (much improved, but still relies on corner knockdowns ftw)

Low:
Blanka (much improved, but like Sagat, needs great players to show his full new potential)
Fei (very different from ST, but also needs exceptional players to show how good he really is)
Zangief (still struggles against a lot of characters, but still deadly in the right hands)
Cammy (still struggles but is much easier to use and may actually be better than I think)

Dunno about Claw being on top of everyone, but its not something I’ll rule out.

Thanks for actually being smart and putting Hawk at mid.

the trouble with Hawk, Honda, Blanka and Fei Long is they are devastating in certain matchups and situations, but can feel impossible to win with in others.

i mean blanka can beast on Guile, and Honda makes playing as Gief just not very fun at all, but both struggle against Ryu (imho). Thats the trouble with tiers, does being a “generalist” like DeeJay or Guile count for more than a “Specialist” like Honda?

The former have strategie that are pretty universally applicable, the latter have specific strategies against some characters / situations that are devastating.

Hawk is definitely growing on me. If it wasn’t for easier 360s in Remix, I woulda never been able to use him or Zangief as easily as I do now. Plus, I’m starting to prefer Hawk over Zangief (sorry Zangief fans), especially in non fireball matchups. Though IMO Zangief still does better vs fireballers than Hawk. But yeah, Hawk having a useful Super with massive range, an invincible on startup DP to escape fireballs and faster walking and jumping speed are pushing me more and more towards dat Mexican. = )

That’s true. But that’s why people have alternative characters, to circumvent the difficult matchups that their main has. The interesting thing about characters like Dictator and Blanka, is that even though they’re not that high in the tier list, they are actually good alternatives since they give most of the top tier a tough time. Meh, there’s always a choice of characters to balance out your main IMO. The trick is choosing the right alt.

Edit:
Also, this is just an observation, and nothing against Honda players, but I find that Honda players rarely use alternate characters. Yes, there are a few here and there like EA and studtrooper, but overall most Honda players I come across never have an alt IMO. And if they do, it’s usually Boxer. What’s up with that? No love for Claw or Chun Li? Again, it’s just my observation, no offense.

I’m not knowledgeable enough to make a full tier list but i can give my impressions of Claw so far.

Claw i would say is no longer at the top of the game above Dhalsim, Boxer or Ryu.

I would say he is probably among the top of upper mid but not above the top tier.

He cannot rely on slide as much against Guile.

He cannot rely on Walldives as much against anyone and especially not in the matchups where his main form of winning came from walldives such as:

Dhalsim
Dictator
Honda
And to some Regard Zangief and Cammy.

Characters have been given buffs exclusively for the reason of beating Claw:

Guile
Zangief
Dhalsim

In conclusion All his matches are worse in HDR compared to ST.

And he needs a lot more work to win his matches that were already bad for him in ST.

Claw and Chun Li are good but have quite a huge learning curve imo. And also it could be argued that dictator could be upper mid tier due to finally getting a decent reversal(devil’s reverse). But then again do not want to go into fighting game theory so I’ll leave that one alone since I hes not my main or alternate.

360’s with Zangief in ST were easier imo since he leaves the ground slower than T.Hawk. I could do them around 90% of the time but T. Hawk is pure hell on my hands since that motion hands, I could get it right about 70% of the time but I felt some numbness in my hands after playing a couple of matches with O. Hawk… never again.

But T. Hawk getting O. Hawk’s awesome normals was huge, Vanilla ST Hawk sucked balls as far as normals go. I would place remixed hawk around lower mid tier, or at the very least the best of the low tier characters.

Have you tried beating a good Claw player with Dhalsim or Guile? The only thing easier than ST is not having to worry about knockdown Dives. But Claw is still guaranteed at least one ambiguous crossup Dive after a knockdown per round vs any character.

You could say the same thing about Boxer.

Oh wait, you play on PSN right? That explains it. You haven’t played any real good Blankas yet. Come to XBL and you’ll meet a few that will change your mind.

Nice list putting ken and sagat where they should be. id have boxer, sim, ryu, claw at top

Blutallcans told me shotos are his hardest matchup.

LOL Looking forward to it mang.:clapdos:

I don’t think you have played ST if you even begin to consider Dhalsim and Guile vs Vega in ST even comparable to how they are in HDR.

Here’s me playing a Swedish Dhalsim player for atleast 40-50 matches.

11/20/2009 1:11:02 PM
11/24/2009 11:01:34 AM are what i am referring to.

Those two should give you an idea of how hard that matchup is for Dhalsim in ST.

(the one between i screwed around with different characters watch only if you wanna see how much i suck).

Shari, you misunderstood me. I agree that Dhalsim and Guile have a tough time vs Claw. What I’m saying is that their buffs, specifically vs Claw in HDR, which you pointed out in your last post, do not help them out that much. The biggest buff for Dhalsim and Guile vs Claw is the nerf that Claw himself received: no knockdown Dives.
