Anybody have a suggestion for some over the ear headphones for my iPhone? I’m on campus a lot with a lot of downtime and my last pair of seinheisers just broke in my bag.
Ok these are great decisions and i agree with you, but by telling him that you own a pair of high end over 1000 dollar pair of open and closed cans isn’t going to help him make his decision. So you didn’t even need to write any of that. I could sit here and Spout about high end headsets he probably wont purchase too. It will make me look soooo coooool. We get it your an audiophile. I also listen to FLAC / Lossless doesn’t mean anything to the OP if thats who your trying to help. Also while your setup is nice im assuming its not very portable either if your running it out of a PC audio rig.
“They lack the airiness and super realistic soundstage and accuracy of open cans, but if you choose the right pair you can come very close.”
You said so yourself not me. So there is no reason to disregard Open-eared as some sort of non-option. If Accuracy and Realistic Soundstage is important to him its still an option. If all he cares about is bass and a decent sound he can still avoid going the Beats route and get some closed cans from ATH, Denon even Sony in some cases.
This is the Top of the High end market, this is not ever going to be in the 200 dollar range of the original OP price. HD800,T1, Ultrasone Edition 8/9 and if you want god tier The Sennheiser Orpheus. Im sure these all sound incredible, but nobody is going to pop these into an MP3 player and be comfortable toting 1000+ bucks above their head in public. But heyyy i agree the LA7000’s are one of the greatest headphone rigs.
The assumption that “Everyone” has heard of the HD555 is cute. You are right though, I didn’t at all consider his musical tastes, because i wasn’t even answering the OP directly. He didn’t even say which Beats Headset he was only mentioning interest in them. All my last post is, just a price comparison that’s about it. 300 bucks gets you 1 overpriced headset. Then i just grabbed a solid pair of cans that i listen to music with at work and an amp just to show you can get more for your money. If he just wants a bass heavy pair your suggestions are fine.
Now i would have to respectfully disagree, calling HD555 a low quality pair of headphones when they are considered one of the top entry level Audiophile sets doesn’t make sense. They are a good headset and they aren’t Overhyped / Popular as you make them out to be. Just because you and me know what they are doesn’t qualify that either so thats merely subjective at that point.
They are really popular in the audiophile community but thats because they are a really good set and highly regarded. Don’t make them out to be some Low Headset just because they aren’t heavy on the Bass Driving or to your tastes.
Also Portable Amps add way more punch to the HD555s creating a Clean Deeper Punch For heavy Bass tracks. I agree that home amps are way better when your comparing a portable Amp, but give me a break, thats like saying PSP is a shittier version of a ps3. Go to any Audiophile forum like Head-fi.org and they would all recommend you pair HD555’s with a portable amp because there “is” a noticeable difference.
“Portability” is important aspect for alot of on the go people. If anyone went to great lengths to go high end, everyone would just get home systems and stay home for listening.
Bought a ten quid pair of chunky headphones. Never looked back.
I can see this is going to end in an argument so I’m just gonna make this my last reply.
The reason I mentioned all of my gear ON TOP of my headphones was so that anybody else who is an audiophile will understand that what I listen through does not color the sound of the music and the headphones presentation whatsoever.
You missed my reasoning behind my comparison, I would’ve used the comparison had I owned HD555s and M50s it has nothing to do with the price. The point was that closed and open headphones have extremely different presentations frequently, but can also be very close to one another provided you choose your cans well, and when choosing headphones you have to consider what you are looking for in a pair.
If you go on literally any forum on the internet and search for headphone threads, the HD555 will be mentioned in nearly every one. It’s easily the most well known and highly recommended entry level headphone out there and many of my friends who have no idea about high end audio have heard of them.
But that’s fine that you weren’t responding to him directly, I just didn’t want him to misread it and not consider other possibilities. Also, like I said, there’s really no need for a portable amp at this price so that extra money would likely be better spent on a better portable pair of cans.
I apologize I never meant that they’re a truly low quality pair of headphones, merely that in the price range he has provided there is much better available, and that many slightly more expensive cans ampless would outperform HD555s with an amp.
As far as portable amps go, it does make a difference, but that difference is negligible in relation to the price IMO. With high end IEMs and the like, by all means go for it, but otherwise I wouldn’t bother. That’s just me personally. Especially since for the most part as far as portable listening goes I’m looking for it to be just that, portable, and the amp hinders that.
I agree, which is why I’d recommend skipping the portable amp, and HD555s aren’t exactly the most portable cans they’re a bit chunky.
I was going to go ahead and buy these head phones know as “mix style”.

Never heard much about them, but they sound nice.
I’m currently using my BOSE Quiet Comfort 15 and trying to get rid of this new DRE’S TOURS EARPHONES NEW. I love my BOSE, planning on getting some Gemini next.
@sektr = No argument needed? In most of your post i agreed with you with the exception of course that 555 is a low quality headset. It’s a different headset for sure and your closed headphone definitions are spot on. Regardless you have just handed out knowledge i failed to present for the OP. Your directly helping him while i was indirectly posting things to him/others who are just reading, so i can see why my information was quoted.
I had no idea were were arguing in the first place. I was just merely backing up my information that i handed out and defending the fact HD555 is not a low quality headset.
Portable amp or not that is still up to anyone listening preference and i respect your opinion about them. I like portable amps because you can use them for multiple things, like driving a PC set of speakers / Laptop /Work Desktop without having to purchase an audio card for the PC/laptop. Also you can always keep the portable amp so even when you outgrow your old headset or they break you can just plug in your new ones. So in general you can enhance any pair of cans cause you just plug them in. They have their own value.
Also I wouldn’t recommend an Amp if your just a casual listener especially if your tone def.
Well the audio forum i go to say these sound very similar to Skullcandy headsets. They are more Style then Sound and a japanese audio reviewer gave them a 1 out of 5 wbhz mix-style mix-style headphones

Repost from Tech Talk.
Received the ff. package from Capcom and Astro.
What’s this? You guys sent me the mixamp as well!?!
Now just to compute:
-Astro Gaming A30 headset = $129.95
-Astro Gaming Mixamp = $129.95
-Custom A30 tags = $19.95
-TOSLINK cable = $14.95
-How much I paid = $0
That’s $294.8 worth of audio equipment I got free just for making a custom megaman pixel art speaker tag. Now excuse me while I renew my Capcom fanboy card.
Blank, some recommends would be nice.
Love this thread, been looking to purchase a headphone for my laptop soon. blackfriday, cybermonday, and christmas is around the corner with the biggest blowout sales of the year, can’t wait to see some cool deals
keep the suggestions coming guys :bgrin:
Oh wow.
Looking up more info from the source you gave me, the head phones sound awful!
Thanks for the heads up! :o
Like I said earlier, everybody just saying “recommend me headphones”, you NEED to post your musical tastes, how much you’re willing to spend, and whether they are for home or portable use if you want a worthwhile recommendation.

Snap L-Boogie. You need to tell me what you listen to primarily then i can actually dig up.
Alright so some folks are wondering what a nice entry level headsets would be in the $100 dollar range.
Sennheiser HD 448 - Headphones | HeadRoom Audio
This was recently released. Its a solid ALL Purpose headset. Its closed so expect a more intimate soundstage, its made out of very sturdy material and comfortable padding allows long listening sessions because the pads actually go around your ear and not on top of them. The bass is very lacking though, but if your a fan of Rock, Alternative, Trance, Ambient, Orchestral, Jazz, Blues or A-Capella this might be for you.
If you like Hip Hop, Breaks, Drum and Bass and Dubstep, you may want to look into these headphones below instead.
AudioCubes.com - Audio-Technica ATH-WS50 Solid Bass Headphones -
I would imagine the ATH-M50 sounds very similar to that particular headset.
For a pair that is also a very solid build with a lighter frame but open ear’d with well, crappy sponges for ear covers. Its under 100 dollars but the sound quality is entry level.
it has problems with extended listening because the cups will crush your ears and warm them up after awhile.
My man. I listen to mostly hip hop and rock at the moment. For tests I always have a play list that starts out with Shook Ones by Mobb Deep. lol
But yeah, rock and hip hop. On occasion I’ll rock some Crystal Method.
edit Let’s see, I was rocking sennheiser CX 95s and they were great, but I’d like something that isn’t in ear. It is great for walking on campus but after a while my ears pop. It isn’t nice. lol But the bass response is nice and the mids and highs were pretty god damn clear so I’d like something similar, but maybe like a closed can.
Yeah i can see you dipping in to a more Bass styled can cause hip hop hits bass and some rock music is heavy on bass guitars.
Sony MDR XB500 - headphones - Ear-cup, Binaural
The higher model will have more bass so there will be sound that leaks through the bass vents so people around will be able to listen a bit to what your bumping.
These will get hot after awhile though so keep in mind they will crush the ears in super long sessions.
If you need a set to go around the ears (Circum Aural) for max comfort. If you got money to blow, this will do your Rock and Hip Hop some Justice.

If you want more of a clear “All around” headset
Sennheiser HD 448 - Headphones | HeadRoom Audio
its under 100 dollars but it does decent in every area but keep in mind it will not hit them bass levels if your into heavier Bass i wouldn’t recommend these probably better off with the sony. They are a bit bulky but for the most part they are also very sturdy.
So I bought Audio Technica ATH CK70PRO a few weeks(maybe a month) back, I needed a pair of new earphones for my mp3 player and somehow I was attracted to this model. I’m not really an audiophile so Im not that good at knowing how to judge earphones etc besides from actually listening/testing them myself and going with the ones I just like the most, and of course the design and cost. I was just curious how people who know their stuff better rate the earphones I just bought… Seemed like I couldnt find any reviews of it online.
Anyway, I listen to a lot of Hiphop but I dont limit myself to any genres.
As for at home, I’m using Sony MDR-CD900ST(a friend recommended em to me), been almost 3 years already and its still workin great, no real complaints there.
I usually use headphones while I snowboard, ride bmx, & guirar. My advice is to stay away from skull candy. Most expensive pos. At the board shop I used to work at, literally almost everyone that worked there broke their headphones made by skull candy. You are basically buying a gimmick that would be better spent in chinatown getting a similiar pair for cheap. I have better sound quality from some $20 Sony’s at Wallmart then some SK lowriders. F skullcandy, snoop doggs sig. phones suck too.
