The Headphones thread

Review: V-Moda Crossfade Headphones

so ive been in the market for headphones for a few weeks now. idk too much about headphones but ive tried Beats by Dre monster headphones and I have to say these things are the best headphones that ive ever tried on. im hunting for a decent deal on some of them because theyre kinda pricey. anyone else have any experience with beats by dre products?

You can get better headphones than the Beats for half the price. If you give me a price point and what kind of music you listen to I can make a recommendation.

Source: Self-proclaimed audiophile/headphile, spend way too much on headphones and audio equipment.

I actually listened to the V-Modas and Beats studios side by side and the V-Modas blew them away soundwise and look way sexier.

Dont get the beats pro. Not worth the money by a long shot and looking for replacements since im taking them back.

well i listen to mostly dnb, underground hip hop/instrumentals. and dubstep. im looking to spend around 100 - 150 on some over ear headphones. id go up to $200 if I reeally need to. I dont want them to be too big though because ill be doing a lot of traveling with them. The sleek design is also what i liked when looking at the beats studio headphones. but yeah it did seem like there were cheaper alternatives that were just as good if not better.

any reccomendations would be awesome though. I used to make a lot of beats and I still dj/scratch a lot so I should know what good headphones should sound like but honestly i dont lol.

Yeah, the eH-150’s are the same price, higher treble, if that’s your thing. I have both.

I’m in the same boat, but I’m looking for something cheap with decent sound quality and bass. Right now I’m looking at some Sony Piiq Exhales, but they’re newish to the market and I haven’t found too many reviews on them.

Beats are super overpriced. Now im not saying at all that they suck, in fact i think they are a really nice. I would compare them to Bose though in terms of Crazy Marketing Hype and Brand Pricing. The base is major heavy though and you tend to lose alot of the midrange sound that alot of other sets provide at half the cost.

Monster Beats by Dr. Dre Studio - headphones - Ear-cup, Binaural - Black what $299 buys you. unless you count the shady dealer selling at 239

Let me provide you with an example of how you can maximize the amount of money you can spend and get Superior sound quality.

You can purchase
Sennheiser HD 555 - headphones - Ear-cup, Binaural zip zoom selling at 89

So basically you got a Superior Sound quality HD Headset + a “Portable” Amp that can double as USB DAC. for the Same price as Monster Beat by itself.

Beats have been known to leak sound according to some people… i know personally that the band tends to snap because it’s hard plastic.

I currently own a sony MDR V150 , and a HA-RX300 by JVC… the latter being the one I currently use. Nothing special, but for $20 it’s not bad.
I also owned a pair of XB300’s, the ear cup presing on my ears hurt after a bit, but with only that being its only issue with me, it’s the best i’ve ever owned… sold it to my sister.

I’m waiting until I graduate to buy a pair of XB700 Extra Bass by Sony, the around-ear cushion will certainly not touch my ears, only concern is if the ring will press too hard, but I supposed I’ll have to find out 2 years later.

So much fail in this thread.

people spending $200+ on dr.dres make me laugh, such tools

You’re better off with a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M50S at ~$100 from certified Audio-Technica resellers on eBay than the Beats.

I’m currently in the market for some over the ear headphones, but I can honestly say I’m pretty illiterate on this subject lol. My budget is $100 atm. The music I listen to is pretty mixed though, as I listen to a lot of different genres ranging from like Trance, Electronica, Melodic Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Pop, and J-Pop. A nice design would be better, but having bought a pair of Skull Candy solely for aesthetic reasons, sound quality takes priority. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I seriously want to of these stupid ear buds I’m using.

If you’re doing a lot of traveling I definitely recommend a closed pair of cans. Despite what Mr. Blank said, closed headphones can provide a fantastic, realistic soundstage, and have much better bass impact than any open cans can provide. They lack the airiness and super realistic soundstage and accuracy of open cans, but if you choose the right pair you can come very close.

At the $100-$200 price point, and with the type of bass heavy music you listen to, I would definitely recommend the Denon AH-D1100s, which are the newer, better version of Denons old top tier portable cans, the AH-D1001K.

Buy DENON AH-D1100 headphones at HeadRoom

You can likely find them cheaper elsewhere that was just the first site that came to mind to find them on and I have it bookmarked. If that’s too much, the Audio-Technica ATH-M50 is a great option as well, it’s more neutral and less fun to listen to than the D1100s, but it’s got fantastic bass and they’re good for djing considering the cost.

As far as the closed/open thing goes, I own both a pair of Lawton Audio LA7000s (modded Denon D7000s, the best Denon can out there and a wooden, closed pair of cans), and the Beyerdynamic T1s (Beyer’s flagship open headphone). I run them both out of my PC through an E-Mu 1212M using SPDIF out, running to an Audio-GD DAC19, to an Audio-GD C2 amplifier, to my headphones.

My source/amp are very close to neutral, maybe slightly on the warm side of neutral, so the sound of the headphones themselves is barely altered if at all. All my music is ripped to FLAC, a lossless codec, so they are CD quality.

Now I will tell you right now, the LA7000s are the headphones I’ve had the most fun listening to, hands down. I listen to all types of music, and I’ve never enjoyed listening to music more. They have a huge, accurate soundstage for closed cans, the wood makes them sound extremely rich and natural, the bass is unbelievable, mids are rich and accurate, with well extended highs. Now the T1s are more accurate cans for sure and sound more airy, but the only genres I prefer them for are classical (never listen to it really), blues and jazz.

I agree with you completely up until this point.

Here’s where I start to disagree. You’re just recommending extremely popular and overhyped headphones that everybody has heard of, and you’re not taking his musical tastes into consideration at all. The HD555s were my first pair of decent headphones and while they’re great cans, they are atrocious for anything bass heavy such as electronic or rap/hip-hop. Same goes for the whole Audio-Technica ATH-A(D)XXX series.

If we were talking about rock/classical/jazz/blues then I’d recommend those above mentioned headphones in a second, but we aren’t.

Also, there’s no reason whatsoever to get a portable amp for as low quality a pair of headphones as the HD555s. Really, I think it’s stupid to buy an amp for any portable headphones below $400 as you will notice little to no difference before that point, and even after that unless you’re using something like the JH-13s it’s not a massive difference because portable players are shitty sources.

Now if he was getting a $200+ pair of headphones for home use, I’d recommend a home amplifier for sure.

Those beats by Dre headphones are a joke…seriously (garbage/gimmick shit).

Can someone explain to a noob what amps are and how to use them, and also recommend some models? When I think of amps, I think of amps for electric guitars or microphones, but I’m thinking everyone is talking about some kind of special amp for music listening. I’m totally clueless about this. What should I be searching on Google, because “amps” seem to be pretty generic.

what do you guys think of the HD 218’s i picked up a pair today for $69.99 CDN (like 80 after taxes fuckin HST)
