The Hakan General Discussion Thread

As I’m progressing with Hakan, I notice I get caught a lot with demon flip throw setups pretty much every single time. The culprits are: guy’s ex flip thing, akuma’s demon flip throw, gouken’s demon flip throw, and occassionally cammy’s.

What’s the best counter to that. I think when I see it, I always seem to react with a standing hp but I don’t think my reactions are fast enough so I get caught. What are my best options, so I can practice in training mode?

I’m not sure about Guy and Akuma, but at least with Cammy, don’t jump, just crouch. Unless she catches you on the frames on wakeup that force you to stand, she can’t catch you crouching.

My current problem with Hakan, which is a big one, is dashing, especially out of focus attack. Like, almost half the time I focus attack, I unquestionably do the input to dash, but I don’t FADC. Is there any way to improve other than practicing, such as a different way to hold the stick?

I currently hold it as the “wineglass variation” as mentioned here. http://fighter101.net/main/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=55&Itemid=37

You probably just let go of the mp+mk too early. Keep holding it down and do the dash while still holding. Otherwise, the FA just comes out instead.

U2. Seriously, U2 stops characters like Akuma and Guy dead in their tracks. Of course you won’t always have Ultra so, yeah…s.hp is probably the best normal for it. Or perhaps C.HP right under it, spd when they land?

But really, just gotta learn how to block those things. Hakan doesn’t have alot of easy “outs” like some other characters do.

not sure if this was ever mentioned before. But the timing for some of the setup for uncrouchable dive and cross-up j.hk differs if you use ps3 or pc or xbox.
for example i started my hakan journey on ps3, and then added the pc version and some of the setup that i usually dont miss stuffs up.
not to say it doesnt work, but it just stuffs up if you switch between the consoles as the timing differs ‘slightly’.

Also the cross-up j.hk on sagat definitly work after the slide/press > c.mp. just need to make sure u hit the button the right timing.
for a more obvious example, hit the lab with hakan vs crouching auto block sakura and practice [ slide/press > s.mp > j.hk ].
This one definitly works as well but requires a more precise timing for the j.hk to hit/block.

Had a horrible day today playing online, tried playing some Ranked and had a bad day. I need to know when to say stop if things aren’t going well. Playing when you’re annoyed is the worst thing you can do.

Also for Sagat, I would just mix up oil ups and cr.mp safejumps. It might even be worth just going for oil ups. Kinda crappy you can’t pressure him like other characters in that sense, but you can still put him in tough situations.

I tend to only play ranked after feeling good about what I’ve been doing in endless. Not very often, in other words, which is why I’m still at about 2000 BP. ha ha By the way, jump over, jump-backward mk stuffs tiger uppercuts and throws, among other things. Doesn’t do bad damage, either.

Yeah, I might start doing that aswell, I was getting close to 2000pp the other day, that’s how bad it was. Although I guess it’s true what they say, PP doesn’t mean anything, or maybe I am really bad, lol. And nice tip. Hmm, I wonder if the instant overhead works on Sagat. Have you ever tried it for finishing someone off? you can do instant overhead jump mk on Gouken, haha. Wish I knew who else.

I have! I was with a couple guys on microphones and got some great reactions :).

I placed 3rd in a side AE tourney at a Brawl tournament yesterday (been trying to convert them to Street Fighter for a year, finally starting to get a small group), made a whole $2. There were a few people who were decent/good, though almost none of them had Hakan experience.

Top 5:
1: Marshall ($12.00) -

2: Grimace ($6.00) -

3: Xyless ($2.00) -

4: Scythe -

5: Zwarm -

Small victory sure, but it’s still something.

Sweet, it would be good to get a list of who the instant overheads work on.

So, I have a couple of updates for slide/press, jump over, oily EX dive. First of all, let me state again, in case you missed this before, that I missed a character! Adon is also vulnerable for you to dive over him, should he duck. What’s more, as it turns out, you CAN mk dive over Cody, as long as you do it quickly enough (ironically… something about his wonky wake-up). Lastly and similarly, Chun-Li IS vulnerable to getting thrown out of her jump from this, as long as you have ZERO delays in your jump-over oily EX dive. I think this is great news, seeing as Chun’s Li’s neutral jumps are so tough to deal with for Hakan.

So, bottom line is, there are at least nine characters against whom it’s good to oily EX dive against. I might add in Honda, simply because he has command throws, it stuffs his butt slams (except EX) and takes away his charge on jump over. In fact, Honda wakes so slowly, HK dive will avoid his throws. Less damage, but no need for oil OR meter, which is nice.

So the nine who can be dived over are: Adon, Chun-Li, Cody, Guy, Ibuki, Sakura, Vega, Juri and Cammy. Cammy and Cody are vulnerable to mk dives, too (which is quick enough to avoid throws). Great practice for 2012, when we’ll be able to do this to everyone.

So here’s a nice trick against Vega. Slide/press, jump over, jump over again. If he does short back flip, you get a deep j.hk, f.mp xx slide. If he does a long, you get f.mp xx slide. Easy and powerful. Also, like Chun, it’s possible to jump over, hk or EX dive his jumps. Also, his wake-up is slow enough that he can’t throw you out of a jump over hk dive; same with Cody.

So, I think I’m on to something here. As I pointed out before, slide/press, neutral jump, lk dive, is uncrouchable against Sagat (among a few others, like Guile). If you apply pressure with a rocket, Sagat will likely start to knee, uppercut or jump, right? Anyway, against Sagat, you can neutral jump, slight walk forward, dry EX rocket to apply said pressure. Same pressure as a jump over attack but with an uncrouchable dive thrown in. If he jumps, he gets thrown by oil dive. If he crouches, he gets oil dive or rocket. If he knees, even EX, he gets oil dive. If he uppercuts or knees, you can also coward crouch, among other things. His back dash sucks hard, so that’s not a huge problem. Basically, it’s huge pressure, even dry. I tried this stuff out on a Sagat yesterday, and I had great success. Maybe partly because he had never seen it, but just as much, it’s because it’s very nasty with an uncouchable, unjumpable oil dive that is very fast relative to wake-up rocket pressure.

In summary, after slide/press, neutral jump:

Option #1: very quick, perfectly executed lk dive (any delay, and you miss uncrouchable): beats jumps, crouches and knees. Sagat’s normals are bad against wake-up dives, i.e. difficult to time.
Option #2: buffered 360 into slight walk forward, EX rocket: beats crouches and normals
Option #3: block or coward crouch: beats uppercuts and knees.
Option #4: s.mk OS lk dive maybe… or something else to punish back dash: Beats normals, jumps and back dashes.

You can also j.hk his back dashes, if you know the timing :).

Hey Mordie
Great information here. Can you do a little video so that we can visualize this? That would be great.

i’ve been incorporating a similar thing with oil dive loops. i’ll do a dive, s.mp, jump over, then jump over again(where I would normally crouchtech/loop dive).
certain character reversals mis-target and wiff their reversals completely. I’m still refining this strategy.

So here are a couple of pieces of potentially useful info. for slide/press/jump-over:

Against Rufus, jump over and hp slide to beat throws of course but also to get a great punish opportunity against EX messiah. You’ll take one or two (very low damage) hits and find yourself behind Rufus. EX dive is a good way to punish from there, unless he guesses that and wisely does mk follow up. If he does that and you guess it, you can j.hk, c.mk. I think hp slide will punish everything, though, if you want a sure thing. Doing a super here might not be a bad idea either, if you have it. One might also slide, FADC backward. If he EX messiah’s, you don’t use the meter. If he blocks, you’re reasonably safe. If you get a knockdown, consider backdash X2, mk dive, for uncrouchable.

Against Dudley, jump over and jump over again to cause EX upper to whiff. Wait to do any moves, once in the air, or you’ll get hit. Do a slightly late air throw to get neutral jumps, as it’s quick enough to do late enough to dodge the EX upper. (I had a series of battles against Dudley today and didn’t once j.hk after slide press, but the pressure was good. I got numerous s.mk/EX rockets, throws or just EX rockets.) Of course, his other uppers, you can stuff with normals, so he won’t be trying those much.

Against certain characters with Ryu’s speed of backdash or slower, jump over, c.lk OS lk dive, normal throw, may be handy. That would include Dudley and Cody, among others. There is some risk against some of them, because the dive hits as an uncrouchable dive, meaning they might normal or reversal.

good shit. in the thread you just made, you should make some reserve posts so you can centralize and consolidate all the information onto the first page, and let discussion continue on the latter pages

Perhaps. I don’t think a lot of people will post there, so it may not be a problem. Anyway, I do recommend slide/oil-follow-up, DNC s.mk, EX rocket. Seriously tough to escape. I’ll be practicing oil follow up BNB after parry, personally.

I saw DIO-K drop cr.mk xx FADC, U1 some time back and only just started giving it a go to find it’s not all that easy. Any tips for this?

I play pad. My bad. lol.
