The Hakan General Discussion Thread

So I also discovered that after slide/press, jump over, you can immediately hk dive Honda’s non-EX wake-up butt slam (and jump and back dash). Probably even more important than that, coward dive avoids EX butt slam in that situation as well, giving time for a c.mk xx slide! A likely scenario, I think. Of course, he can’t initially head butt due to the jump over and his command throw is slow, so you’re going to be doing a wake-up EX OS (360 into crouching defense) oil rocket or wake-up f.mp (which avoids EX, mk and HK butt slam, too, so he’ll be inclined to lk slam which is where hk dive comes in). That and jumping, which is, again, where oil dive comes in. I think this might become my new Honda slide/press bread and butter. (As a side note, be aware that oil dive will get beat by throw unless it’s oily EX).

Have you guys found any specific setups off of the oil up slide finisher? Safe jump crossups, safe slides, that sort of thing?

Nah, nothing unfortunately.

To be honest I just get straight in there and try and put some pressure on, unless it’s like sagat with two bars and ultra or something, then you have to be a bit more careful.
Hmnm, now who is it…swoops I think, likes to do BDNC normal cancel cr.mp, although I can’t remember why, but i’m sure he’ll come round and explain again.

Just mix it up really, it puts you in a good position to either back up and get some more oil (unlike post slide splash) or just go in for some damage, don’t think there’s any oil dive setups for it either.

@Mordie - Speaking of Honda, here’s something you might want to try, oiled f.mp on his wake-up goes straight under lk sumo splash, for whatever punish you like. Dry f.mp might work too. Just something cute to mess around with.

Sorry to interrupt the conversation. I play with a bunch of people around the area and I am easily the weakest player in our group (I have been gone for 2 months and apparently there is new blood so maybe not), but I digress. I main Fuerte because he is freaking hilarious, but have never learned RSF. I basically make good reads.

Any how I have been soul searching for a character to play and I just like to play the more outrageous characters, but I hate getting my butt whooped by my friends.

My general question is: Is Hakan a waste of time for me to learn due to his lack of credibility as a character? And I don’t mean any disrespect because I know there are a ton of awesome players who could beat any of my friends with Hakan. My deal is I want to be credible, but use a fun character while standing a chance. Thanks all the Hakan players.

Sorry friend, not to let you down but in your quest for improvement with hakan but you will DIE alot, you will be beaten a lot unless of course you are extremely good at street fighter’s fundamental. That moment where you are completely helpless will be there figuring out what to do, defending or what move to use. One of many requirement for learning hakan is not to break down easily, be patient, keep soldiering on and learn from mistakes.

You will ‘waste’ time. And by that I mean you will literally waste a lot of time to figure out what move is used to counter what, memorizing what to do before safe jump and when to oil up, oil dive. On top of learning the tricks and technique you have to acquire his ‘soul’ i would call it that because you need experience that you can’t get from just learning the technique actually let your feeling and patience take over at the same time driving your gameplay. He is harder to learn compared to other characters because of the unorthodox play style.

But don’t be discouraged, give him a go who knows your playstyle actually fits him well and that you’re a natural prodigy… no one knows until they try right?

Newager is right on the button. I remember never getting past 2500PP with Abel in Super and having many frustrated sessions. I basically said “fuck it”, picked Hakan, and I played to have fun. I didn’t care about losing, only learning, and that passion for the character and the game built strong fundamentals for me. At the end of Super? I had 5000PP with Hakan, started going to tournies and loved the game even more.

Fuck what people say about the credibility of Hakan. If you put time and effort into him, you’ll get a bunch of light-hearted, “this character is OP” remarks, which basically means that you’ve shown them a new side of the game they’ve been playing for months. With practice, people will respect you and people will be afraid of Hakan. This goes for any character, but the thing about Hakan is that he hasn’t had that much exposure in mainstream high level play. It’s the goal of almost every Hakan to be THAT player to showcase all of the technology that this board has been sharing for a year.

And if that doesn’t motivate you, do your first FADNC cr.MK xx HP Slide. That shit is cash.

Ok so two people inspired me to start. Where should I begin? And I mean down low basics. I did some research, but I think I jump into combos/set ups too soon. What should I focus on during matches?

I do random oil slides. If it hits, spam a whiffed st.M and jump-in with RH, lol. On a serious note, just get used to Hakan’s normals. They’re better than half the cast’s. fwd.MP, fwd.MK, st.MP, cr.MP, fwd.LP, etc. all have their uses.

You should get anti-airing down, but remember, don’t just stand there and take mix-ups. Hakan isn’t the type of character that does well when a character is in on him, so every time you use a AA you should be looking to get out.

If you’re oiled, spam backdash (not even kidding) to get out of pressure. If they’re close, make them respect you by throwing out an EX-SPD. If they neutral jump bait you on wake-up, do a wake-up j.MP into HP Slide. The goal is to make people wary to pressure Hakan, and once you do that you’ll see more opportunities to create your own offensive pressure.

When I was still learning hakan I often got shut down scared not wanting to press a button to intercept ppl jumping in because from past experience the move got stuffed i think it still happen to many of us Hakan player here because his anti air is so situational you can’t simply rely on one move constantly. I made this little picture showing the distances. Keep these lines alive when playing, hope it helps!

http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/7594/hakantiairkecil.jpg

Note:
F + LP is made elongated downward because it can also be used to hit someone crouching & standing far away, but in truth, the animation is rather arc like from hakan’s shoulder to some distance atop in front of his head (look at diagram)

Slide and C.HK should only be used when opponent tries to jump in and tag you from quite far away. With exception to slide: should be done only when you expect opponent to do some mid air attacks such as J.mk or J. hk. The landing recovery frame will be caught by slide’s active frame, if they just empty jump in they will block your slide.

Four most important anti airs, keep the ‘imaginary lines’ alive in your mind when you play: HP arc, LP slide, F.mp (snuck under jump-ins) and F.LP.

Movement range that have forward (F) input listed here are in hakan’s dry state. Oiled, he will move forward a bit maintaining his active hit frame (imagine rekka ken) by about 1/2 to 1 square of training room floor more after the initial dash.

I hope the image works for you all :S

Thanks for the advice. I started today and already want to quit lol but im going to weather it. Random but is there any quick chip move for hakan when ur opponent has the magic pixel left? Ie haduken, fuerte chest bump, bison head stomp ect ect

You ought to watch videos of various Hakan players, until you find a style you like. Build off of that.

That picture is gdlk, Newager.

LOL nah, I took another look and i think it’s messy lol

If your opponent is a pixel away from dying after U2, LK Oil and EX-Slide (with P follow-up). Lord knows how many times I’ve ended a match like this.

Thanks Real. I’ll keep this all in mind

I think the ‘Top 3 Things To Tell A Hakan Noob’ thread has some good advice about what to focus on to begin with. Take a look: Top 3 things you’d tell a new Hakan player

I seem to be having trouble spending meter because I keep finding myself sat on a super which isn’t exactly the most useful thing to have stocked. EX grab is pretty situational so should I be blowing it on slide FADNC pressure or something?

So I went 3-0 at the start of the Box Arena tourney, went on stream, and got bodied by a Chun-Li with superb spacing and poke pressure on my only stream match. I went for a Spinning Bird Kick stuff with j.MK, but I should have just blocked and punished with fwd.MP xx HP Slide. I didn’t OS him on his wake-ups with LP Slide so he backdashed for free.

Chun-Li pokes + not taking advantage of knockdowns = very convincing defeat. I’ll do some more match-up study on that one, sorry I didn’t get to rep Hakan any further.

So here’s a neat trick. As I’ve pointed out, oil dive is quite good against most character’s neutral jumps. I’m sure people know from experience, that against back jumps, it tends to get stuffed by jump kicks. However, there is a sweet spot for back jumps, too, as it turns out.

Slide/press, lk oil up, hk dive is the perfect distance. It will get back dash and neutral jumps, of course, but it’s hit box is just out of range of Ryu’s back j.hk but it still throws him. The timing for grabbing Ryu (or Adon, Ken or Akuma, that I know of) out of a back jump is the SAME timing as grabbing Ryu at the VERY tail end of his back dash. EX dive fails as it gets stuffed by j.hk and mk dive is too short. To get the neutral jump, you need a very tiny delay more, by the way, so it’ll require some eyeballing.

[edit]Works for air throw, mk oil, EX dive, too.

[edit]Against Ibuki, use EX dive to beat her jump back.

So I discovered that you can back jump mk, c.mk xx slide against Bison’s EX stomp, if you do it right. I think it wouldn’t be too difficult to bait Bison after a wake-up to try it.
