Red Dead Redemption. Best story I’ve ever played, amazing soundtrack, beautiful graphics, RAGE animations and the best side missions. Those Stranger Missions really make you think man. If you never play this game (you really should though) just take a few minutes to watch the stranger missions on YouTube, they are to good to miss.

My favourite game is River City Ransom.
It took the brawler genre in a fun and crazy direction that future brawlers didn’t even attempt to emulate. I have a game design doc that is based on RCR, but puts my own spin on things.
How many of these fighters experienced a real competitive following, worthy of breaking the game to the level we do with fighters now?
I watched the stranger missions. I really don’t know what to think about them other than the guy towards the end rides a horse atleast twice as fast as a horse realistically runs… And that games like that could benefit from the less is more principle. In Day Zed for example, the impact of notable landmarks is amplified by the hours of running through nothing.
Probably not as impactful for the average consumer though. Damn you, culture of instant gratification.

Good call on Banjo-Kazooie, AF. Absolutely amazing game, good 3d platformer in an era of good 3d platformers (Mario and DK64, DK was probably later I think) a lot of the things were new. And the dialogue was just fantastic

Because the license in Japan is so mishandled and handed off so much all you’re getting is weird sports games until forever. Or a couple weird remakes with money system broken, or worse.
At best you may not need to go make your new game, at worst you get more ideas for your eventual documents on design and making the future game.

Though honestly the best game I’ve ever played was a roleplay enforced text based game with multiple factions of in game politics and a highly realistic combat system that heavily involved not only character social development but grinding skill development under the constant threat of perma-death.
So many factors wove into one amazingly immersive experience and all I can say is that I am thankful to have experienced it firsthand because there will never be another game like it. What with graphical “revolutions” like Everquest and WoW sucking the life out of almost everything creative in massive online gaming.

Dead Space 2 was like as close to an action movie as survival horror gets though. RE4 was limited by the technology at the time and still provided a creepy atmosphere for 2/3rd’s of the game, with the Island and the end of the castle being the more action oriented segment. DS2 felt like a fast-paced thriller that did provide a somewhat eerie atmosphere but still it’s action shined over its creepiness for me.
Can’t argue against that. That’s all something I definitely can agree with and one of the reasons I enjoyed it so much.
The action. DS2 just provided a much more adrenaline pumpin experience more than inducing fear to me. Like the fight after that one chick lies about trying to rescue Isaac; one of my favorite parts of the game. It’s less fear inducing… I think it was partly due to the glowing “shoot me here” spots, the short amount of time you had to spend fighting it, and just the game pushing you to get through it quickly.

This is exactly how I played Tales of Vesperia. It actually made the game a lot more fun because I was putting together strategies. Letting the AI take control was never good with me outside of FF XII. Start Ocean’s AI was funny. They were horrible at healing and they would do team attacks but not with me.
Fallout 2.
It’s kinda hard to say no to a game that lets you be a boxing champion by jabbing people in the eyes, arm wrestle a super mutant with the , ahem, appropriate consequence for losing, steal the mafia boss’s bitch right under his nose and melt people’s faces off with plasma weapons.
Oh, and you can punch the president of the US of A right in the face. FUCK YEAH.
the old school FPS were the fucking best. non linear levels that had huge portions you could skip entirely if you knew the right secrets. it was quite beautiful. duke nukem 3d is my favorite because it had a better game engine that allowed you to do more. if you notice in DOOM, its not possible to have two horizontal levels stacked on top of one another (for example, a three story building where each floor is directly on top of the previous one is not possible). doors could only open up/down but never inward/outward or horizontally. the duke nukem 3d build engine was not quite true 3d like quake, but it allowed for far more possibilities. this translated into a great non linear game with jetpacks, holodukes, freeze guns, shrink guns, strippers, awesome one liners, and gigantic bosses.
second favorite is heretic/hexen, which basically heavily modded the doom engine and put the game in an awesome gothic fantasy setting with badass weapons
