The Greatest Videogame You've Ever Played

Very simple question.

What is the greatest videogame you have ever played? This is not a “what if you were stuck on an island what is your favorite videogame of all time” question.

We have favorite games, yes, for example, probably my favorite single game ever is Chrono Trigger, but it is not the BEST game I have ever played.

I think the best game I have ever played was Metal Gear Solid 3, I’m sure NickGuy is going to hate, but it’s all good. :sunglasses:

Ico and Colossus are certainly honorable mentions as they get right to the point and use the story as a backdrop for the gameplay, which is something I personally love in videogames.

We are mostly talking about gameplay and more specifically gameplay mechanic innovation and game feel.

MGS3 always stood out to me because you have to capture food in order to eat, that and the camouflage system.

It is not required that you have beaten the game you consider the best game, but you should have a fairly good idea as to what the game has to offer when it’s fully fleshed out.

Let’s keep fighting games out of this, just because.

I considered making this a console game only thing, but I see no reason why PC games can’t be included.

Discuss.

Edit: Now that I think of it Resident Evil 4 is right up there for me with MGS3, this is mostly for game feel, every kill is totally satisfactory in a way I can’t compare with other games. Can anyone forget the first time they heard the chainsaw guy and got their shit fucked?

One of the few games I’ve legitimately been scared playing.

the mother series

Everquest. Big, massive, required really high-end computer gear for it’s time. Impossible to understand at first even if you did the tutorial (and then they took the tutorial completely out ) and totally fun because it was 90% ass-hat free, largely due to the reasons listed above.

Second runner-up: Wing Commander Privateer.

Which one?

dodonpachi dai ou jou

That sounds like an extremely ass backwards apologetic way of saying the tutorials were ass.

You’re avatar is very pretty, but I’m also fairly certain it’s a dude. That phantom 5 o’clock shadow.

It looked suspect even before I maximized it.

my avatar is dead

Well I feel like an asshole, to my defense her upper lip does look a little dark in that picture.

Silent hill 2, probably.

Maybe Mother 1.

Persona 4?

Haven’t played Silent Hill of any sort, and I don’t really plan to, survival horror doesn’t appeal to me sadly. The game looks great, but to be honest I’m not sure could beat it.

Played the first part of Silent Hill 5 at a friends house once, and it was uncomfortable.

Are you kidding RE4 was scary? It’s got a creepy atmosphere but not the least bit scary IMO. I really encourage you to play Dead space 1 and 2 as your next games but only late at night in the dark with the volume way up:tup: A hell of a lot more fun and action packed than all RE’s combined and it’s actually really fucking scary, not just lazily relying on jump scares.

My favorite game and is the best game to me, Sonic2 it’s the only game besides maybe Sonic3 and Sonic and Knuckles I actually believe is perfect in every conceivable aspect.

suikoden 2, I STILL play that game ~13 years later

This question isnt fair. I couldnt pin down a legitimate favorite if you put a gun to my head while asking.
Though the ones that come to mind as candidates are

Crash Bandicoot 2- One of the first games I remember playing as a kid that wasn’t a PSX port of Frogger, so it’s always held a special place.

Psychonauts- The Milkman level, and the artist level. Nothing more needs said.

Metal Gear Solid 3- Took awhile to get used to the controls but had a well made, long story.
Plus it was just a fun playthrough. Need to play again at my current age to fully appreciate it though. The same goes for Psychonauts.

Half-Life 2 and episodes: I enjoy the fact that it is one of few FPS games anymore with a good story that doesn’t have fuck tons of cutscenes that strip away your character control. Also hidden rooms are always fun to find

Ratchet and Clank- First game I ever played on PS2 and absolutely fell in love with it. Good comedy traits. Awesome guns and quite a few things that kept you playing for a good long while, like amassing the money to buy a R.Y.N.O. Also the fact that despite the series not being an RPG, the ability to carry certain items, weaponry and such over to the newer games was fantastic.

Resident Evil 4- Very long entertaining story. Asshole bosses that gave the best feeling ever when you finally beat them. Whether by legitimate means, or that Rocket Launcher you’ve been holding on to for the last 2 chapters.

San Andreas- Having only played GTA 3 at my friends house, Vice City when I couldn’t fully understand it, and the most recent GTA 4, San Andreas was the best of the series. Anyone who has played it can probably understand why I would believe this. The amount of features, side shit, customization and things that keep it entertaining after the fairly good story arc are what make it great to me. The only thing close to San Andreas is probably the " Ballad of Gay Tony" DLC for #4, as it almost captures the same feel.

Pokemon Gold and Red- Only Pokemon games Ive ever played and never had any complaints about either. Still own both till this day as well as the Atomic Purple Gameboy Color I first played it on. My Pokemon Gold just reset it’s save data a month ago. How I miss you, Level 85 Scyther

Also can you tell I loves me a good story arc?

Also my parents NEVER EVER bought me Nintendo anything as a kid with the exception of game boy color.

Na, it just had a really quirky system and the GUI was really unforgiving at first. The tutorial did the best it could, given the scope of the game. “That grass snake just kicked me and I died” was a pretty common phrase heard early on.

all of them

Not scary, but there were frightening parts, plus that wasn’t it’s selling point for me anyway.

I love fighting games, but I don’t remember playing any other game as many times as I have had with this for some reason.

ST.

Super Mario 3 and Sonic 3+Knuckles are platonically perfect adventure games, but the best videogame has to be one of the SF2s and the best SF2 is ST.

The only thing that scared me was the invisible fucking bugs. Only because of what they did to my ammo reserves.
Sometimes its 2 shotgun shells. Sometimes 5 or so if they were good at dodging.
Then you do new game plus with a Chicago typewriter and laugh about it.

Gun to my crotch if I could only choose one game, probably Just Cause 2.
Absolutely love the game. I’ve had it since it came out and I still play it from time to time. Truly an overlooked gem. Story is tongue in cheek and theres pretty much no interaction with other humans, but goddam is it a fun game. I have hours upon hours stacked on just 1 playthrough (I still haven’t 100%) just doing random shit like trying to air drop a tank on some soldiers, or fling my jeep down the tallest mountain in the game with me in it. Massive environment and varied landscapes. I hate talking about it because I feel like a salesmen for the damn thing.

Fuck it. I don’t care, shoot me in the crotch, I’m adding Fallout 3 also.
