This happened?!? Fuck that asshole…
Ultima 4 may be the best game I’ve ever played.
Yeah. He got attacked by a ghost in a town, he manned up and took it out being reminded of his wife who appeared as a ghost and told him to be a man and fight. Technically he defended the town by himself.
When he’s hurt and staying at the female led town and your current team is getting it’s ass handed to it by a boss that seems invulnerable in a place where you can’t use metal, he realizes their dire situation somehow, and gets up despite his injuries to get his harp and plays a song so moving that it reaches to where your team is and negatively impacts the boss you’re fighting, making him vulnerable, allowing your team to be able to fight him.
I’d say he got his balls at that point doing something for everyone despite his condition instead of just being a bitch (like he was to me when he got hurt and ran away from Antlion (to get the Sand Ruby) leaving Cecil deader than he was and a kid Rydia to fend for herself…
Let’s not forget the first Cecil and Kain fight. Edward was involved in the combat at the seige of that castle, even if he did slip and fall.
He’s still a spoony bard but at least he’s got balls.
Costume Quest.
Chrono Trigger
I didn’t know this was the “Most Over-Hyped Anything of Ever” thread.
When did it segue?
Sent from my thumbs, using SRK technology.
Over hyped?
Explain how, and i’ll shoot down each weak explanation.
I’ll start with the fundamental flaw.
Shitty, shallow three person party battle system.
…did it actually introduce the shitty three person party battle system?
Because if so, it is responsible for one of the worst steps backward in game-play design, ever.

most americans dont know shit about rpgs. Fuck you all im going back to dragon quest, fuck final fantasy 7
well, if you mean real time combat rpgs, i can understand you completely.
see, problem with turn based rpgs is that minion or grunt battles become tedious as fuck pretty quickly. but boss battles are still the most exciting thing you can do in gaming.
now, rtc rpgs take care of that issue. even if you are facing the same ol minions time and time again it won’t get so boring coz there’s always a new way of tackling them. battle conditions are ever changing. but the problem with real time combat rpgs are boss battles coz they become button mashy as fuck. its like, "hit this mofo as many times as i can before said boss launches some large area team k.o. magic attack…and remember to keep resurrecter/healer spaced as far away from boss AND fellow party members…heal when needed. rinse & repeat."
hence.
boss battles in real time combat rpgs are boring, lacking in strategy and forethought.
but i still prefer real time over turn based anyday.
biggest gripe i have with rpgs is level grinding.
i’m shocked that no one has ever tried to create a rpg where you gain level exp other than minion battles.
like, if i could develop a rpg, i’d have the classic level grinding to gain exp…but i would also have alternatives to gaining exp other than battling. like perhaps…gamble for exp in casinos. in some rpgs you can gain weapons or equipment only through winning them in casinos right? like the casino weapons in tales of the abyss for example. so why not win exp points by gambling at the casino? gamble your exp for the chance of winning big exp stats.
or any mini-game type way of gaining exp other than level grinding through grunt/minion battles.
maybe, help town folk with chores. or build shit like the weapon factory in rougue galaxy. insect breeding-rougue galaxy. something like that. i mean, okami gave you exp for blooming and feeding nature. something other than battles.
mmmm.
coz i hate hate hate having to stop my advancement in a rpg, coz my team isn’t strong enough to take down boss, so i have to leave boss’es dungeoun, or castle, or lair, to go wandering & meandering around for a couple days straight of fighting minions over & over & over again to the point i fall asleep and shit…just to go back to beat said boss.
shit is NOT fun.
i hate level grinding to face tough bosses. its like gaming torture or something.
Objectivity isn’t what you think it is.
That’s not to say subjectivity can’t produce both thoughtful and dumb opinions.

RPG:
It’s tough so since its so tough to narrow it down I will start with the game that introduced me to rpgs.
Dragon Warrior. My friends had this game on NES and played it a lil bit didnt like it and gave it to me.

Fuck I’ll be here all day. LOL great thread and you guys need to chill the fuck out.
If you like a game cool if not its ok but no need to attack peeps for what they like sheesh.
Just cause I love Xenogears and you might hate it it dont mean I hate you lol.
All these games are like recommendations to me, wish I didn’t have a life.
I realized I should mention MGS1. Totally awesome game, but I would probably enjoy it more if I didn’t really get around to playing it half a year ago and know most of the plot and secrets before hand.
Wanted to elaborate on Secret of Mana as a top pick. Great story, awesome graphics, cool looking monsters, fun and challenging battles and a really incredible soundtrack; some of the best tunes ever. Tragic ending too, just the fact that saving her boyfriend is Purim’s original objective to joining the battle and he ends up becoming the evil leader’s host body, damn.
I don’t think I’ve seen one person mention Dragon Warrior in this RPG talk.
HD Remix needs more praise. Also we haven’t played in like forever.
