Honestly, if you REALLY do have ONE favorite/best game ever, you’re not a gamer.
Whoa, people are talking about Nier? Shout-outs to Nier for tugging on my heartstrings for the first time in YEARS. I don’t even remember the last game that made me turn into such an emo bitch. Fuck, I don’t even remember the last movie I seen that made me feel like such an emo bitch. There’s just something about the characters in that game, man. Some serious passion went into making Nier, and I fully believe that for Cavia’s last game, that they felt they needed to end it with a bang.
We’re talking about Neir in the the Greatest video game thread? I’ve never played it, thats why I’m asking… I honestly thought that game looked like ass when I saw it advertised and even more so when I pick it up at Family Video… I’m just surprised is all, it has a good story with a heart-wrenching twist is what I gathered from what I’ve read. How is everything else?
so and since you don’t like [insert game x] you go around speaking especially about it saying how awful it is right?
you’re the stellar opposite of all the FF7 love. and you hate it because you want to hate it because it’s popular. that’s like the description of a hipster.
classic Turn based RPG = "combt is meh"
kk, that means you hate around all <00er RPG games.
but it’s okay bro. be a hipster - it’s not like it’s forbidden or something. you’re simply way too cool to not hate FF7. btw Dragoon was mediocre to me - now I need to go around trashing it. Kappa
Music is one of the best ever seen in a video game
Voice acting is brilliant
Story is decent
World (while rather poor looking) is very fitting
Astonishing character connection and emotional touching
You have to see the game as a whole. as an experience. play it - play it a bit longer and eventually you simply *feel *what’s so genius about that game. It’s a VERY underrated and somewhat insider tip, but is very cherished among the RPG fans, and usually named under the Top 3 of the current gens RPG (tho, not that it has THAT many competition). I can totally recommend it.
edit:
some more: http://forums.penny-arcade.com/discussion/130149/nier-is-the-best-motherfucking-game and if you google a bit “nier best game” etc you’ll find plenty of that.
and one OST track (best ever imo) to fix you:

just think you defeat a tower-high boss while you listen to this… because you do.
edit2:
fck you. I’m gonna get another copy right now. I’m so hyped again x)
Characters have different stats, so one is more effective at something as the other. Tho, that’s not as obvious. The weapon and LIMITs also plays a role of choice. secret characters also bring a lot of plot and side story with them.
anyway, again, I can understand how someone can not like the game and that’s fine, taste is different and all, but that’s no reason to go around spreading HATE about it. You just bitch about it for no apparent reason other then that it’s cool to not like the FOTD game. it’s one thing to say “I don’t really like FF7” and “FF7 is overrated crap and I hope the future generation will have something better” lol.
emotionally attaching? as in to characters? or their storyline?
it happened in ff4 with Kain 's jealousy Cecil doubting his king Rydia forgiving and learning to trust. Edward growing a pair of balls.
it happened in 6 with Celes losing all hope (just like the player does) when Kefka wins and she’s just trying to save Cid with her despair reaching its peak when she practically tried to kill herself. or Terra coming to terms with her self Cyan losing his family twice technically. Two bros reuniting despite one sticking to duty and allowing his brother the freedom he always wanted. hell even Setzer saying Fuck it I’m all in.
hell you can even get attached to Red Ring Rico despite only knowing her through messages she left you and finally putting her to rest.
ff tactics makes me wonder what woulda happened if the end of chapter 1 didn’t happen what would have been for Ramza and Delita.
In all seriousness though I can’t narrow down one so I’ll just pick one for each genre I like.
RPG-Suikoden II(PSX)
Great story, interesting characters, unique turn based battle system(at the time), and great music that fit every scene in the game. Xenogears would occupy this spot if Suikoden II didn’t exist.
Survival Horror-Resident Evil(PSX)
Started it all and is the only game I can remember that made me think twice about playing it at night. I would literally debate on whether or not to put the disc in and play it. It’s age like all old games shows it’s flaws and RE 4 is now my favorite but it doesn’t hold a candle to the overall atmosphere the original that started it all created.
First Person Shooter-Goldeneye 007(N64) Looks at COD fan boys COME AT ME BRO!
The nostalgia I get from remembering the nights of playing this all night long with my brothers and friends is palpable. Besides multiplayer it was fun trying to unlock cheats by completing a mission in a set time frame. Fun times…fun times…
Stealth Action-Metal Gear Solid/Twin Snakes(PSX & Gamecube)
I was in middle school when MGS came out(Yeah I’m old if you can’t tell yet)and I had never before witnessed a story and graphics(at the time)as groundbreaking as what MGS had. Needless to say it blew my 6th grade ass away. The remake is obviously my fave because well…yeah…you get the point.
3rd Person Role Playing Shooter-Mass Effect Series(Xbox 360)
Just for the fact that it has character continuation with your main character and most of your characters depending on the decisions you made in the previous game. Not many rpg series can say that…period *Cough Final Fantasy
don’t you dare to spoil Tactics for me. I’ve never played it as I wait “for that one time” where I need a good 100 hours game on my PSP (…stranding on an island… prolonged vacation - I dunno) :3. AND I WAIT FOR YEARS ALREADY AND I WILL KEEP WAITING TILL I CAN FINALLY PLAY IT!. The time WILL come eventually. I know it Ò__Ó.
Well for one neither of those moments depicted were that much surprising and for the most important part, they didn’t have the visual back up. Graphics mean not much I know, but it’s somewhat more shocking seeing a beautiful rendered innocent Aeris dying then some 16 bit mess. I dunno, for me there are exactly 2 games where I felt really emotional attached - great games or not. FF7 and NieR. And I really loved FF 6 - but who doesn’t (tho, I HATE BLITZ input²³²³²³).
Speaking about all those great games really emphasizes the feeling that this generation’s games are just empty vessels without souls who look pretty but lack heart. =( - anyone knows a sleeper RPG hit for either console or PC since 2005? (and I mean sleeper, I think I played almost all RPGs already).
I think after so many games I’ve settled to the following:
Little Big Adventure 1 and 2. From the creator of the 1992 game Alone in the Dark (much better than Resident Evil), this has to be perhaps the first open world adventure game, predating GTA. you could go almost everywhere. But those games were also very rich in content. Controls in #1 were a little annoying, but #2 corrected a lot of issues. Its world was vast. Twinsen’s Odyssey has to be perhaps the biggest adventure game I’ve played. When I thought it had ended, I had completed just half of it. One of the most original games. I played the PC version and too bad there wasnt a console release for the sequel at that time. One of the last great AAA PC exclusives that could have appeared on console but did not.
Toonstruck. This has to be perhaps one of the most polished point and click adventure games I played. Cartoon animation was excellent, all the famous cartoon voice actors of US TV lent their voices to the characters and Christopher LLoyd was the only live action actor there. Has the atmosphere of “Who framed Roger Rabbit”, with adult jokes and humour. Too bad it flopped in sales and so much content made for the sequel was not published. Because the ending of the game left us with a cliffhanger. Waiting for a sequel or an enhanced edition. Anyway, the voice acting is top notch, I dont want to miss a single line!
3.Curse of Monkey Island. I’ve played all MI games, but I think this is perhaps the best, despite the departure of R.Gilbert. I had my reservations back then, but after reaching the finale and then playing #4 and replaying the HD remakes of #1, #2 and Tales of Monkey Island, this seems to be the most polished. Other contenders were **Day of the Tentacle **and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Jazz Jackrabbit 1. Mario had its own charm, Sonic and Tails the same (plus they were cooler than Mario), but nothing beats this demented version of the tortoise and the hare. The PCs answer to console platformers, it featured frantic action and cool characters. It was a combination of shooter and platformer but it had good quality and smooth animation.
Its sequel was inferior for single player but great for multiplayer. It supported high res mode so you could see all players. It had also a custom level editor. Even today online community is active. consoles at that time couldnt pull that stuff. Both games had the best music.A pity the GBA game was mediocre and the third installment was cancelled
Harvester. Games are not just about fun and enjoyment. This horror adventure game left an impression on me like no other. Like watching a De Sad novel adapted in a video game, in a fictional small 50s town in the United States. Game was banned in some regions and edited in others. It predates Manhunt by 10 years, but unlike it, it actually features a story and puts all that stuff you see in a context, something that makes it even more disturbing. Actors were live action and not CGI like today. Eg a teacher beating small kids with a baseball bat, kids eating their mother, a mother feeding her baby with wasps and spiders and locking and torturing her spouse etc Such a game will never be made anymore with that quality. It had a big budget for its genre. there were some serious gameplay issues, but not to the extent of detracting from the perverse atmopshere.
Im going to go with SSF2 HD Remix for best online experience
In home, ill go with the classic Mike Tyson’s Punch Out or one of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms game…Gladius was pretty badass too!
