DLC gems might be like etting heroes in league of legends.
I can grind points for a hero. or i can buy it with cash.
either way, everyone has acces to them

Well hopefully you are right, I really don’t want to see DLC gems. Also everyone else made it sound like we had to pay for them so thats what I assumed. IF DLC gems happen I can see them being for money, Capcom is a business after all but we will all see I suppose.
I cant fucking believe it. I just cant.
Lets go point by point on this absurd text you made me read, the second one probably is even more retarded so i wont lose more time analyzing that one.
‘‘character diversity naturally fosters imbalance. There’s no escaping it.’’
Sure, that is not the point. Perfectly balance is almost impossible, but when you give a character, like Yun in ssfivae, so many advantages, while for Vega you dont give anything, you make the game already unbalanced on purpouse. Game devolopers should strive for balance, giving decent tools for all characters to be competitive. What tools does vega has? He has low damage, his claw and mask can fall off making him even crapier, he doesnt have even a cross up available. While Yun has awesome meter gaining, great damage and great options.
When you make game choices like this YOU ALREADY LIMIT FROM THE START THE CHOICE OF THE PLAYERS. Vega will be rarely selected because he is crap, so what is the point in expending money in developing a character PURPOUSEDLY made low-tier?
‘‘
How are designers supposed to tackle this issue? Every experienced player will tell you that concrete strategy is all about matchups. If you start with two characters, you’ll want to give them a complex array of options with the ultimate goal of staging dynamic battles while ensuring that the most skillful player wins consistently. Whenever you upgrade one move, you’ll have to match it with the appropriate adjustment on the opposite side.
When you introduce a third character, the number of matchups triples. Now when you institute an upgrade, you have to cautiously strengthen two potential rivals to that exact same degree, then compare them with each other to make sure their matchup doesn’t suffer. Every minor tweak can snowball into a series of adjustments echoing back and forth. We’re still talking about three characters here. Well, if you have a cast of 56 diverse characters to balance, you’re basically screwed. Nobody’s that smart.’’
Duh. Obvious. Even so you can say that games like ssfiv and mvc3 are more balanced that sfiii and mvc2. Why is that? Perfect balance is impossible, that is an agreeable statement, but making a character , FROM THE START DEPRIVED OF GOOD TOOLS WONT HELP BALANCING THE GAME, AND THAT IS THE FUCKING PROBLEM.
‘‘
Clearly, demanding 20+ evenly matched characters is an unrealistic expectation. What would be considered a reasonable number? Looking through the Classics, i’d say any “good” fighting game with a legitimate top tier of four or more characters is perfectly acceptable.’’
That is stupid. Simplfying all the problems. A game can be unbalanced by having overpowered characters or underpowered.Look at brawl tier list.
Besides the obvious overpowered meta knight, that was banned after all, all A and B have a shot at tourneys.
Look at ssfiv tier list. http://iplaywinner.com/news/2011/1/5/super-street-fighter-4-tier-list-january-2011.html
9 A’s and plenty of B’s that had sucess at tourneys like Rufus, Viper, Ryu, Adon and Dhalsim. And even C’s were viable, like Rose with her good ultra. That is enough to refute the next statement:
‘‘Even with four evenly matched fighters, we’re looking at ten possible matchups, including mirror matches. That’s plenty’’
No, it is not plenty. It is ridiculous. Always the same old match-up. Boring and the contrary of hype.
‘‘
To be clear, it doesn’t matter how many squares there are on the character select screen. Who cares whether five useless portraits remain in the game or fifty? Percentage-based breakdowns are meaningless. Only two factors count when considering balance: whether there are four or more characters in top tier, and whether the matchups between them measure up to our high standards. When either of these criteria ceases to be true, that’s when we should stop playing the game.’’
COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY BOLLOCKS. Yes it does matter. All those ‘’ squares on the characters select screen’’ costed money to develop. Why they should be UNDERDEVOLEPED is the real question. Again, i am not looking for ‘‘perfect balance’’ what i am looking for is that all characters FROM THE START having good tools to compete.
‘‘Yes, you may have to switch characters to accomodate the realization that your original choice can’t compete against top tier. However, if you enjoy the core game and you have four diverse characters to choose from, just pick one and continue enjoying it’’
And this just kills it. The choice in a competitive fighting game should be not on the quality characters but if the player likes the concept and the model of each character. In Ae we have Yun, Yang and Fei as top tiers. With Viper slightly behing. I like neither of those 4. I like Gouken, Rose, Vega, Gen and Adon. Only Adon can compete with those top tier, and barely .
You should be less arrogant and accept that your opinion is on the minority. There is no reason whatsoever to make characters in a game purpousedly underpowered.
The same matchup after watched A THOUSAND times cease to be interesting. Mirror matches are NOT INTERESTING.
If the ufc had Jones vs Rampage all the fucking time it would be the most boring thing ever. The same is with fighting games.
WATCHING CHUN-LI VS CHUN-LI EVERY FUCKING TIME IN A 3S CHAMPIONSHIP IS DAMN BORING.
Fairly certain that was me, and my point was that you actually DON’T have to buy the Runes in LoL. Earning points through play and purchasing them that way keeps it nice and free. The fact that you can pay money to buy from the same pool of Runes is the lynchpin that keeps it even. Those who don’t buya ren’t deprived, they just have to wait a bit if they want a particular Rune, and Riot/Capcom gets some extra money from the “now now now’s.”
I assume that most have at least read the pointers of the latest Ono interview and, I have to say, it’s somewhat alleviated my concerns. If the “couple of hundred” figure holds true, that covers a TON of ground stat-wise. So now, in my mind, I’m thinking any potential DLC gems will be either cosmetic or so absurd/inconsistent as to be uncompetitive in a competitive field against the base gems.
That fact that he reiterates that they’re ready to balance Gems as needed also helps. They kinda have to keep a handle on this if they want it to be core.
I’m back to cautiously optimistic.
This is hilarious! Capcom drops an excellent a relatively balanced game in SSF4!
Then proceeds to fuck it up with AE. Now they are realasing a whole new clusterfuck with SFxT. They do love flipping the bird to their customers. I’ll be passing on a game that is mistaking unnecessary complexity for depth. That $60 is gonna buy me some good coke!
So…what does this have to do with gems exactly?
Is a free block vs. losing one bar of meter really even a choice you’d have to think about? Lose a good chunk of health or lose meter? I don’t think anyone would choose to eat a combo to preserve an alpha counter.
That’s what it does, yeah. It’s confirmed. I can understand auto-throw break for 1 meter being a real choice, but free block? That would be a must-have Gem.
Because it’s not about the characters but the matchups.
What you really want are interesting matchups, because those are what sustain the game in the long run.
Character variety doesn’t matter when the matchups are boring (look at MvSF or, to an extent, SSFIV). What’s the point of balance when everyone resorts to the same gameplan?
Now look at games like ST or MvC2. Hardly the most balanced games, but they do have interesting matchups. The top tiers of both have tools that tend to favour a certain playstyle and when they meet, it becomes interesting since both players are trying to get the other player to play in a way that favors their character.
Same applies to the Gems. Even if we only get a few viable builds, what matters is that the matchups between those builds are truly interesting.
P.S. Seeing as you most likely come from the Smash community, it’s no wonder you have no concept of matchups. Here’s a tip, don’t read the tier list, read the matchup chart that makes the list.
This is why I used to run Cammy against Akuma back in vanilla SFIV. She may have been low tier then, but (based on the metagame back then) the match-up against Akuma was in her favor.
Why there are so many jerks around?
Sometimes, in discussions, we have to deviate from the main point to refute side points made from other participants.
In this particular case the side point was : ‘’ the hype of unbalanced games’’
yeah whenever daigo a ft5 he plays the first three with his main and then random selects the rest because he gets bored of the matchup
The Chun v Chun matchup being boring is a result of Chun being most effectively played in a defensive style, not because she’s op. :v I could find you mirrors between shit/low tier characters that are just as, if not more boring than Chun v Chun. Ever seen a Honda mirror in Vanilla? Shit sucked.
naah
imo
LMAO! I like these characters but they aren’t as good as I want them to be. This game is unbalanced! I hate Capcom they are terrible! Wahhhh wahhhhh.
No i am not from brawl community. I barely played that game.
But ok i got it. You prefer a character having distinct advantage over another from the get go than 5-5 matchups being decided by the most skilled player.
You prefer a 8-2, 7-3 chart games than ssfiv with all those 5-5 matchups: http://iplaywinner.com/display/ShowImage?imageUrl=/storage/images/tierlist-jan2011.png?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1294258475181
That is ok. It is your preference but you should acknowledge it is in the minority.
As i said if every ufc was Jones vs Rampage it would be the most boring thing ever.
ufc 135-Jones vs Rampage
ufc-136- Jones vs Rampage
Ufc 137- Jones vs Rampage
Superbowl xxx- Packers vs Steelers
Superbowl xxxi-Packers vs Steelers
Superbowl xxxii-Packers vs Steelers
How fun.
A free block that costs one meter and could’ve been done yourself by holding back or down-back correctly, at no cost. The question I have now is will it trigger if you’re holding down-back and somebody jumps in on you or goes for an overhead.
Still, the better choice would be that one would improve their own player abilities enough to not need a Gem to automatically do for them in relevant situations what they can do for themselves normally, thus not even needing to use a slot on it, using that slot for something else, and keeping the meter.
Pretty mature way of engaging in an argument.Congratulations.
Fuck it, I’m gonna go ahead and get hype for this game again.
Being negative is counterproductive at this point for me. I’m buying this, day one, and if it turns out competitive, great. If not, at least I can have fun with it. I’ve been waiting for a Street Fighter Vs. Tekken game for, oh, 10 years now?
Yeah. There’s no way I’m not buying this game. Gems or no Gems. Same with TxSF.
What? No one blocks everything perfectly. Obviously you’re going to get hit in a match cleanly extremely often. Since, as we all know, hitting the other guy is the most basic, basic element of a fighting game, this basically rewinds a devastating decision/mistake for you. As to your question, it blocks anything you fail to if you are not in recovery from some move afaik. Would you choose to get hit by a meaty or lose 1 bar of meter?
Ow gosh this is tiresome.
ANY MIRROR IS BORING. Mirror matchups being boring is the result of BOTH CHARACTERS HAVING THE EXACTLY SAME TOOLS AND YOU KNOWING WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE START.
Compare Yun vs Yun vs Yun vs Dhalsim. In Yun vs Yun you know that both will use the same exactly combos, similar opening up strategies and the same exactly tools. Yun vs Dhalsim one is striving to get in while the other is striving to keep out.
The problem is not that Chun vs Chun is boring, the problem is that a character like Sean DOESNT HAVE ANY TOOL to compete with chun.
oh hey the gem system fixes that
your move, kaiba
Lmao, really? This shit is sad, honestly. Some of his points are questionable, but the fact that people here are ok with Capcom purposly making characters worst than others is fucking sad. He is right that Capcom should try and make a character the best that they can be off the bat. Not give yun 100+ options and then take away options from the cast that barely has options to begin with.Capcom can’t do good balance on purpose. But they can at least have the Courtesy to fucking try.
We are off-topic away, so yea.
