The First Lady of Fighting - General Chun-li Discussion

Well, that’s unfortunate. I hope the Hori works out for you. As for Chun-Li, here are the highest-damage solo combos I’ve been able to pull off:

I’m new to Chun - any good tutorials? What’s her mixup like with/without assists? Neutral/Incoming? How does she beat pushblock? What are her fundaments essentially?

Anyone?

I don’t really think there are any REAL tutorials online that I’m aware of…I mean there’s combo-videos but I don’t see anything beyond that… would be nice if there was an extensive Chun-Li tutorial on youtube. If not then we can always beg Maximillian to do an assist me for Chun.

Anyone feel like talking start of the round with this character, at least? Both character specific and general principles would help a ton
I’ve actually gotten more help regarding this character from the Tier thread than here…

Information about Chun is pretty hard to come by because she is a lesser-used character. Most people here have had to figure out most of the intricacies of the character on their own. Compared to say, the Magneto boards where everyone is sharing information.

In terms of start of the round… I usually will just sit on an EX SBK charge and it’s a good way to immediately open up someone who pushes a button. If they go for an air throw most of the time they will get hit by the SBK and if they go for a ground throw they usually will slide forward at the beginning of the round so you know to tech it. But try to wait a bit to see what they do first because if they dash back and start throwing out projectiles and you throw out a SBK then you’ll get hit. Eventually you can usually tell what type of opener the opponent will go for based on their movements before the match starts. If you are playing a long set, sitting on that EX SBK charge at the beginning is just a good way to condition the opponent to not try anything at the start of the round.

Filipino Champ just created a post-EVO tier list that I just found on Twitter. Looks like he thinks Chun is just as bad as Hsien-Ko or Phoenix (Wright).

I think that’s just a load of baloney…

I didn’t see that he actually went back and finished his tier list. I disagree on a few fronts. I think Chun is on equal ground with She-Hulk personally. And then a bunch of other things that shall be reserved for the tier list discussion thread.

I can POSSIBLY see why he put her there but I don’t think she is that bad…thing is with tier lists is 90% of the time…they put placements but they never truly “reason” why. I play LoL some guy creates tier lists and creates reasons why he placed so and so here and why so and so went down.

I’m under the assumption he put her that low because he knows nothing about her. Just the bit of time I’ve spent with her makes the idea of her being Hsien-Ko tier ridiculous.

I think the other tier lists place her higher than last somewhere between middle and low middle tier but I think he put her there because he doesn’t know how to get inside or open them up which is admittedly probably harder than footdive/slides spam or insane crossups.

I believe Chun should be on the same tier as X-23 ( a solid mid). Chun is much more execution heavy than most characters in the game but that shouldn’t justify placing her in bottom tier as tiers should be based on character potential rather than their difficulty to use. Chun has all the tools needed to be a mid tier character so I am baffled as to why people place her so low. Tools such as instant overheads, fast cross ups, fairly far reaching low attack, can combo off of throws without the use of assists, invincible super, fastest non-throw punish, great speed and maneuverability, (I believe) one of the best assists in the game for offense and defense, decent damage output for a single bar, a crumple, long extended meter building combos etc etc etc etc etc. A few excellent players like Brian has shown that she has potential and can hold her own in a lot of situations and I still believe there is a lot more undiscovered tech with Chun.

What I find quite odd was that in Vanilla most of the pros had the universal opinion that Chun was mid tier…now in Ultimate where she only improved, some of the pros are rating her bottom tier. Maybe I am missing something as I don’t think there was a lot of the cast who got improvements more significant than Chun’s.

I’ll admit she has some very good tools but

her dashes are decent and thats probably why she is put down lower and the air dash nerf hurts that too.
if you take a look at wolvie/wesker/magneto they have easier time getting in and chun is more easily zoned then them. Yeah i think she should be middle tier as well because I don’t think she’s anywhere near the level of Arthur and Hsien-ko and Phoenix wright. Also her combos are difficult to squeeze damage out when lets say someone like magneto can do easy to do loops and build tremendous meter at the same time.

And who knows maybe he got bodied by Chun Li one day and has a forever hate against her.

I personally think Chun-Li is better than a lot of those characters he placed at the lower-mid section. Do you honestly mean to tell me you guys think Ryu is better than Chun? I know I shouldn’t be looking at these characters in terms of 1v1 situations, but I feel like if two players of an equal high level were playing each other (both down to their anchors, no X Factor) Chun could easily content with the likes of say Akuma or Strider.

Perhaps I might be sounding really arrogant and giving Chun more credit than she deserves, but that’s just my take on it.

I agree with you. Chun-Li is definitely better than Ryu and a lot more.
Triple jump + wall jump, otg, nice damage output and jump cancelable normals are enough to make her mid tier.

I’ve been wanting to use Chun-Li for a while now but I was always discouraged because of what was said about her. In the past week though, I’ve found that doing her combos aren’t that difficult with a little practice. The thing I am finding hard is using Chun online. Are there any (preferably successful) online Chun players around to give me some tips?

Ask Lud. He plays online.
Chun-Li is probably one of the hardest characters to master, but she is good. She’s just not derpy like most characters.

Spinning Bird Kick is derp, though…

Right thanks. I’m starting to use Chun/Lei Lei/Doom (yeah I know). Also, you inspired me to start playing Chun Brian!

Thanks!
I think Lei Lei has one of the best assists for Chun-Li! Let me know if it works out =)
