ironically, its the same discussion we’re having now.

edit
hopefully versus has a new game+. that would be dope IMO.

Lol, thanks for the second link debs. I remember when I was playing through and I still had no idea what pulse, cocoon, etc was at the time. I even called the open area space Jurassic Park. At the time I was just playing through the game to get through another FF game since the battle system was the only thing getting me through at the time.

XIII’s battle system was its greatest contrib imo

I don’t know about all that.

I have no problem with gripes cause they are legit but at the same time it didn’t bother me much. I think my anger stems more so from people who didn’t even put time into the game and just hated it for the sake of hating it. It just seemed like they we’re on the sidelines just waiting to flame the game.

Man if they played for 5 hour (Thats a legit commitment of time for something to grab you) and they still put it down the then there is clearly a bunch of problems in a number of places and the story is probably one of the,. 5 hours and it fails to grab you at all? Garbage. I remeber having to dive into the suplimental material just to figure out WTF they where talking about in normal conversation. Thats bullshit.

Are we still talking about XIII?! Could’ve sworn I just had flashbacks of XII.

Funny enough I really like XII. It helps that 12 has tons of exploration, the hunts are available almost right away, you can set up your party from pretty much the beginning of the game. XII lets you do like 90% of the shit XIII doesn’t let you do till chapter 13. Yea its story may not be the greatest but it does most everything else right while XIII doesn’t let you do shit for a mass amount of the experience and its story never really grabs you either.

Yeah, that’s a pretty big no-no in RPG storytelling (or maybe just storytelling in general). Nobody should have to sift through menus just to understand what’s going on. You should be able to figure that stuff out during the actual game, and not leave unexplained stuff to an appendix. That just screams laziness.

I was not a fan of XII. I did not like the battle system and hated the main character. I loved the other characters who were not Panello. The story did not grab me and while I usually love tactics team, their overreaching plot that the main character has little to do with M.O did not really work for a final fantasy, imo

I’d argue that Vaan is not XII’s main character but that Ashe and Balthier are and Vaan is simply The Watson.

Yeah, and I remember reading that the tactics guy didn’t even want Vaan or Penelo in the game. It was supposed to be about Ashe, the warrior dude, and Balthier and Fran. Vaan and Penelo were shoe-horned in on him. Considering the stuff that Square has been producing, that doesn’t suprise me.

This is why XII is baller and XIII is not.

XII right out the gate lets you do what the fuck you want, gives you a shitton of side quests and lets you customize the characters to your own tastes.

XIII tells you where to go, who you can play as, what you can do with the characters they give you, and when to proceed. That shit was acceptable back in 1992 when FFIV came out because they didn’t have the technology to do otherwise, but not anymore. Fuck that game and fuck everyone in it (that isn’t Sazh or Snow).

This is true to a degree, RC. Basch was originally the main character but it was actually Matsuno himself who decided to put Vaan and Penelo in, as he decided he didn’t want a actual “hero character” but rather an “observer” of the shit going down around them.

Basically, some average joes that folks could relate to seeing war happening around them. Now because he got sick and all he wasn’t able to write the story for them nearly as much as he wanted to, leading to the lack of development for the most part (Vaan got some in the end thanks to the new writers, Penny not so much).

I returned to the beginning of FFXII to take down TRex, biotch!

None of what you said is in any way, shape, or form a rebuttal for what people have listed here as issues. Also, you’re trying to take the conversation in a different direction and saying VIII is terrible. We aren’t talking about VIII. We’re talking about XIII.

Bottom line, the issues that MULTIPLE people have had are legit. You’re trying to go the route of “Well, they didn’t finish the game, so they don’t know shit” and it won’t work here because a bunch of us have finished the game, and we have the same issues.

edit Spelling error. Stupid iphone.

Cold-BLOODED!

And yes, XIII really is one of the worst, if not the worst FF games ever made. It’s like all the awesome got drained out of them from making XII and then they went into the studio to work on a sequel.

It’s hard to pay attention to the story when the story itself doesn’t even know wtf it’s talking about. And it doesn’t help that all the characters talk like they were mentally challenged. You’ll also be surprised how many people who hated it actually beat the game. (ie. a lot)

I would write out all the plotholes and things that didn’t make sense in XIII (and there was a lot), but I’ve already purged most of the BS storyline out of my mind.

Also I’ll just because I find it mostly accurate to what all the haters have to say about the game.

Looking back I actually think XII’s story was decent, I liked the political struggle plot they had going on. It’s just that there’s such a hugeee gap in between events and so much optional stuff to do that you easily forget the plot.

Whoa whoa whoa. I’m an avid final fantasy fan and I disagree with this. 13 was on an epic scale storywise and it really did a good job of character development and making you, the player, feel attached to the story. The battle system was an attempt to go in a new direction and I liked it personally. 12 is one of the only FF’s I actually felt bored with. Story and gameplay elements both lacked IMO.

Lol.

Exactly.

Or: RC reiterates

Even gay people hated how gay it was.

As I see it.

XII was amazing. Yes, the story fell a bit short off the mark (I hear the head writer got sick for a while), but even despite that, it’s still an amazing game/experience. All the story needed was to shed a bit more light onto the beings which were akin to gods (Forgot their in-game name) and to tie them more into the plot. I read somewhere that this was the original plan, but when the head writer got sick, the god-beings were delegated by the other writers to back-stage/laissez faire/observer status.

Also, Gabranth is pretty much the best FF character since Ramza in FF Tactics. FFXII’s cast (minus Vaan/Penelo) is arguably the best FF cast.

I love the Ivalice Alliance games. All of them have been ridiculously good, and they take a turn away from a lot of cliches the jrpg genre is riddled with.

I played FFXIII long enough to get a Platinum trophy. I’ll be damned if I’m accused of not putting in enough time before pointing out its overabundant flaws. To hell with that noise.

Also, stop beasting so hard, Ronin.
