It seems to me that most peoples’ criticisms of FFXIII are pretty dead on, since most criticism is the same. The game could have practically been “My first RPG”.
That’s retarded. We didn’t get the extra shit because Square was saving it for XIII-2. They spent so much money and development time on XIII that they gotta get the money back some how. They sold a bunch of copies of XIII, but they can make XIII-2 with the same assets and make a lot more money without much work. They did the same things with Final Fantasy X-2.
Actually, I just read your response, and considering what you wrote it looks like a direct jab at what TGA said.
What’s funny is that The Grey Area is right about most of the game’s short comings. They don’t disapear. You don’t need to play the game for 80 hours to realize the flaws are inherent to the game’s design. I beat the game and comparing this game to ANY OTHER final fantasy and the one thing that’s missing is choice. In practically everything.
Now, I realize the crux of your argument is specificity, which is funny, since a lot of people have pointed out MAJOR ISSUES THAT SPECIFICALLY SUCK. For example, some of the specific reasons I think the game was pretty awful consist of things like:
You don’t get to pick your team till chapter 13. That’s RIDICULOUS.
2.The emotional moments, with the exception of the ending are cheap, melodramatic bullshit that 12 year old twilight readers would like. “OH, HE KILLED MY MOM BLAH BLAH BLAH” bullshit that Hope pulled was the biggest, dumbest, most illogical piece of story telling I’ve seen in the last 5 years. The plot to Fast and Furious 3 had more emotion than FFXIII. The only character that had any depth was Szaz. That’s it.
The first half of the game is one giant dragged out tutorial. Every single time you get a new ability you switched to another group.
The game handicaps you with two people for the first 30 hours.
The upgrade system makes NO fucking sense. At all.
The last 10 hours of the game are the only good part, and that’s a GIGANTIC problem.
When you’re finally out in the world and capable of doing something like exploring, the game is pretty much a grind fest that consists of nothing but fetch quests.
The only consistently fun part of the game was the battle system, and even then, the game breaks down to staggering an enemy first and beating the shit out of them.
I think you brought up specificity because you probably didn’t realize how fucking stupid that argument is on a game where multiple people across hundreds of sites have listed having the same issues with the game. Those problems don’t have to be things like"Oh, well, there was this one point when this one thing happened, and the character model looked slightly off…" which is what I think you were hoping for. Trying to act like that type of shit is the only valid concern or complaint is pretty fucking stupid. The issues that people have had with this game are relatively universal, so please, don’t cop out with “Well, I never see anybody be specific.” cause that’s bullshit. You’d have to be a fucking idiot if you don’t see some of the issues people have with the game. You’d also be an even bigger fucking idiot to think that none of these complaints were valid because you like the game. People have been VERY specific with problems that XIII had. Problems that were gigantic design flaws that hindered the game in some aspects, to making it downright not enjoyable in others. And people have posted those complaints, so it is a little insulting for those people to be thrown in with the crowd you mentioned because you came up with a shitty argument. You know, the one where you said that the people who didn’t like this game are the ones that post on Kotaku and liked FFVII? Further, it shows you’re not really thinking about what you said since your reply to TGA was basically “Uh, derp derp u mad”.
Well, to be honest, it was 20 hours before you can choose your party. Doesn’t make it any better anyways.
Still, I don’t think I’ve seen an FFXIII complaint list that was unique, Ronin’s list is the average list of complaints there are. The onyl complaints I would add are:
I don’t agree with the “L’Cie are criminal” excuse people use to defend this game. Because they’re criminals, we couldn’t enter towns/ talk to NPCs/ had to change environments every chapter? Really? Because, I’m sure there were other games in which you were the enemy of some great empire.
As well as being healed completely after every battle…kinda takes the difficulty out of the game. Grandia II suffered from a similar issue. Rather than actually heal after every fight, the save point right before the boss was also a healing point.
*To add on to #8, the battle system was good and all for an ATB, but you rarely had the time to actually watch the fight.
It wasn’t that bad to be honest. It was a nice ride for the 30 hours I spent on it. I just wish weapon synthesizing was more fun. The way it worked made me almost want to vomit.
Damn, Ronin swoops in with the flames of the phoenix

To be honest, the ending didn’t even phase me as well, because
ending spoiler
[details=Spoiler]the game gave me no reason to care for Vanille and Fang to begin with. If anything, I was more like “Good riddance.”
It got better seeing Sazh get reunited with his kid and Lightning/Snow getting reunited with the sister (don’t remember her name), but it wasn’t anything worth talking about. It was kind of a “Oh. Good for them” moment and you moved on.[/details]
Vanille and Fang are Les Yay, that was reason enough for me to care about them.
Don’t forget that they’re
the only remaining people of Pulse
Oh, I had no idea that this was still going on. I tend to just say my piece and leave but if this is to go any further I’m going to need somthing to call you since I can’t really take anyone with one of those weeaboo names seriously. I just picture some mouth breather with pocky shoved up his ass jacking off to a body pillow. If you could give me a respectable name like chad or somthing I would be happy to tell you why I replied in such a manner. Untill then, just pretend that I was talking to every little shit that comes out of the woodwork to insult people who don’t like the same things that they do, and not you.
To be fair to Square though there whole mission was essentially to provide a game that captures the cinematic experience. Hence why we got a streamlined but semi-challenging battle system and the linear game. I might be the only one that gets that Square is trying to experiment around with the FF series. Up to this point i think the only thing they shouldn’t have done was try do FF online again with FFXIV.
Okay so they were experimenting new things in XIII. Fine, so let’s say that explains the linearity and everything (somehow), but that does not explain why the story and script was so goddamn bad. I doubt anyone understands exactly just what the hell they’re saying and exactly wtf happened and why, especially the scene right before the last boss…to think that Toriyama is directing XIII-2 again, after his work with XIII and 3rd Birthday totally kills any anticipation I have for its release.
But see thats the thing. People feel the story was oh so bad when in fact it wasn’t. It had some flaws but far from being horrible. Personally i just think people don’t pay attention to the story. A vast amount of criticism from all the haters about the story were mostly from people who didn’t even put in the time to play through the damn game and quit after 2 hours.
Not gonna lie, I’m excited to. I liked FF13 and while I do agree with some of Ronins points I still genuinely just like the game. To each his own I guess though. I do think that the hype behind FF13 was so great and people were expecting sooooo much from it that it did fall short for a lot of people. Was a decent game imo I seriously hope FF13-2 fixes some things that irritated me in the first game(not being able to choose party until ch 13 or leader dies = ggpo) lol.
Fuck that shit. I’m tired of dealing with these little 4chan assholes that have infested this place. You want to say some dumb shit and then talk about “oh you butthurt?” or “I was just trolling” when someone calls you on your bullshit.
I have no issue with you but I have not yet begun to get childish. I’ll start talking about his mother drinking all the rent money and taking it in the ass to make up the difference. Yeah fucker, how many donkey punches did that copy of Gunslinger Girl cost her.
My biggest gripe about XIII was characters (except Sazh/Fang) and the upgrade/equip system. It felt so thrown in and there was basically no push to customize like crazy or try different shit. Just get highest stats and move on. Superstar Saga had better customization.
And WTF Crystarium? At least you can choose direction on the Sphere Grid. This was just lvl up by holding X.
But Versus can make me forgive Square for everything and I mean everything
Real Talk I can guarantee if you go to any other place than SRK that has this discussion, 9 times out of 10, people will tell you they never finished the game and based it on the 2-5 hours that they played with the game. I guess you could make a fair assessment somewhat with that time but the fact that people are saying this is the worst of the FF series is fuckin dumb.
You wanna talk about worse FF series? I’m going with VIII and not because of the junction system but with the story that at the end made everything that you did in the game meaningless.
a lot of us finished the game at the same time and posted on here around that time of trying to hold out for (iirc) lionheart to upgrade and how to farm traps, etc.
we put time into this game. if you look back at our posts we commented on the battle system and a lot of us liked it but we definitely pointed out the flaws. none of this stuff is new. the gen consensus around here was what ronin said. somewhere i posted a huge list of flaws and if you look back and read the stuff now, pretty much everyone is saying things off of that list in different order.
it is what it is. that many ppl having the same opinions on the game should tell ppl something. even square got the message which is why we have some of the things that ffXIII didn’t have making a return in versus.
