The Final Fantasy XIII series thread. Black people sold separately

I didn’t even know you could get staggered.

I mean the way they momentarily stun you and stop your casting.

i think i’m going to do all the missions, THEN beat the game

anyone else did that?

ffxiii looks and sounds so lousy. I’ve been a huge fan of ff since I was a kid and I’ve been disappointed by the direction the series has taken since 10 years ago. The remakes are nice but it would be nice to see a new “real” final fantasy game similar to the older ones, but I think those days are over. It’s nice to see Dragon Quest keeping it real (in my eyes) but FFXIII just going in the wrong direction from game to game. It’s nice that they are trying new things but they could always do that and make it another game called something else other than Final Fantasy.

You can’t. Think it stops you on 30 something.

Some of you guys are/were expecting WAY too many things with 13. Maybe you should apply at Squeenix so you can design the perfect FF.

Sure the story may be riddled with plot holes or too far-fetched, but what FF/science fiction game isn’t? Even then, if you’re not completely retarded, you still have a basic understanding of the story.

IMO 13 is a “like it or not” game. For those of you stuck in the middle, you’re S.O.O.L. since you can’t truly like it, but at the same time can’t hate it, so you struggle to find something good, but then just find something else to nitpick. It’s a vicious and endless cycle for you guys.

Well, just finished it. Here’s my review:

[details=Spoiler]I agree with most of the stuff debs said. Some good, some very good, but mostly bad for me though. Sadly I think it’s my least favorite of the sequential FF games that I’ve played (all except for JP 4 and 5).

First, the good. This game is probably the best looking game I’ve ever played. Amazing attention to detail, every area is absolutely gorgeous especially chapter 5, chapter 12 and that last hallway before Orphan’s room god DAMN that was beautiful. It reminded me of a mix between the Matrix and the final dungeon in Persona 4.

The story wasn’t bad, like fobi0 said there were some holes but what game doesn’t have some?

The Crystarium was pretty good. I liked it once I got to the point where I had to make the choice of developing one path all the way to the end versus starting a new path to diversify my paradigms.

Also, I thought there were a lot of good systems in place that they could have built upon. Unfortunately as I will explain below I think they had a lot of great ideas and just didn’t develop them enough. I like the battle system but I feel like it would have been better to a) be able to select multiple targets or b) do something like Fire on enemy A, dispel enemy B, protect yourself and heal your party member. That may have been clunky to implement so I see why they went the route they did.

Now the bad.

First of all, the linearity for the first 25-30 hours of the game is the elephant in the room and I think enough has been said about that. I think the problem was the system requirements of designing such a detailed world, I noticed that whenever I was in a semi-populated area (Nautilus, Eden, some parts of Pulse) I dropped to like 30ish fps. That might just be a 360 problem though.

Items felt pointless. The few that existed weren’t really needed, and then there were tons of upgrade materials with no differentiation between one and the next besides how much experience it gives your weapon.

Upgrading, I feel, could have been done much better. The way the equip/stats screen looked I thought it would end up being like FF10 where you could put different materials into your weapons to give them different properties (status proof, elemental resistances, bonus stats, etc.) but it ended up being another linear path up the levels to the next tier of weapons. Why have 100 different components when they all do the same thing in different amounts?

Absolutely no reason to ever go back anywhere except back to Pulse for missions. Fuck that.

Lots of reskins. That’s just unacceptable at this point imo.

No world map (was also a complaint of mind in 10/12 even though 12 kind of had a world map). No airship. No white/black/red/blue magic. No… lots of other stuff.

There were a lot of FF mainstays that were missing, from buffs to attacks to monsters. I feel like it was out of sync from the rest of the franchise, if anyone remembers FF: The Spirits Within it reminded me a lot of that.[/details]

So tl;dr I wasn’t a fan. I agree with just about every last one of debs’s points. Lots of things felt like they had great ideas and cut them short due to whatever constraints. See: the horribly confining maps, linear character/weapon development, and QUICK STAGGER THAT GUY battle system.

It probably would have been a solid game if it wasn’t a Final Fantasy and just a standalone JRPG. Carrying that name, I feel, has a quite a few expectations that come with it.

in before “if you could do it so much better why don’t you go work at SE?”

I wasn’t feeling it at first, but the game is starting to grow on me. I actually love that there aren’t towns. My only lasting complaint is that the camera bounces around more than vanille’s running animation.

Yeah and fuck vanille too. I hated that annoying bitch. Terrible poor man’s rikku.

thoughts about nothing

[details=Spoiler]I thought it was a pretty solid game. It’s main fault was its hype. I mean would an airship really have fixed anything? Do you want to go back to chapters 1-10? The worst part about this was i found myself just plugging along through the pathways for the most part. Once I got to Gran Pulse though the game got a lot better. I could actually some what farm up my characters which I like to do and hunt some monsters. This seemed like a FF to me finally. While I still like 12 more than 13 I wouldn’t say it was actually better. I thought 12 had one of the worst stories ever but I don’t give a crap about the story. I think the FF’s are all tailored to be different to hit all audiences and they know if you bought one and liked it you will buy another. Personally I am glad the towns are gone nothing worse than wasting my time trying to find a nook in the back of a store that you had to reach from a back alley hidden by a fat man sitting on a bench.

So a solid 8.5/10 and that is not on a IGN rating scale. At times it seemed like this game was trying harder to hold me back then let me go forward. I think this game would have been great if you would have just given me the freedom of full levels the ability to pick my team and Hope’s severed head on a pike.[/details]

just finished the game

Spoiler

wow… that was a really shitty ending. they could’ve at least shown snow’s wedding.

it felt so rushed at the end. nothing really original about it.

dont get me wrong, i loved the gameplay and the story was cool for a while. but still, the ending was very medicore imo.

I’m pretty sure this is just like every other FF game that’s come out. You either like it or you don’t. Whether it’s because of a new battle system or implementation Squeenix added or just didn’t quite live up to the masses’ hype, there will always be those you abhor/dislike it and those who love it

I for one enjoyed it and got my money’s worth. Can’t say the same for those who didn’t though.

On another note, I’m strapped for GIL right now and doing the rounds in Eden, while netting me large amounts of CP, does nothing for GIL. I need like 250k more to buy the last five reactors so I can max Kain’s Lance and dismantle it for three traps and 216k GIL. Any suggestions Spoon? :stuck_out_tongue:

If you fixed the robot in chapter 11 you should be sitting on more than half a mil now plus gold nuggets I had around 800,000 gil in Eden.

Soon (or now) you’ll be fighting dudes that drop Perfume which sells for 12.5k

Oh yeah, can I go back and beat the end boss again? I need that 5 star rating.

You won’t be able to back to GP until chapter 13. The boss won’t be there though.

I only scored 2 stars on that fool, one of my worst fights easily.

end game boss? yeh once you load the final save, you’ll be in that white hallway, so you can choose to go right into the boss gain, or back to the warps

sorry dawg this is whts gonna piss u off, u cant complete all the hunts/missions w/e without beating the game first, u cant even get the achievement/trophy on the last boss without beating the game once and then reattempting it. Unfortunately this game is abit of horsecrap but there R nice things here and there, it doesnt scale high on my ratings though ill give it a 5/10

I think whats so ridiculous about this game is that the first 30 hours is really just bullshit. Even at almost 40 hours in I still don’t have Vanille’s summon so yeah it’s crazy how long it takes for this game to develop.

Any Cie’th stones whose missions you did not complete yet will be blinking; those that you have beaten aren’t blinking. It even says so when you access the map (look on the left).

The story isn’t a big deal to me; I just see it in it’s simplistic form and leave it at that. Plus I tend to like characters based on how they play usually, and by now…I like all the characters XD.

I agree that the map shouldn’t rotate with your point of view though. Funny thing is I’ve almost memorized the entire Acrhlyte Steppe by now

Just made 1 mil. gil, and I am currently grinding in Eden, I’ll attempt the remaining missions (5 left for me) after I’m fully strengthened.

Oh there is supposed to be a 3rd giant turtle right? How do I find this one?

should be in the Acrhlyte Steppe by now, its accessible after you finish mission 51 or so it states in the guide, i only have 8 missions to do, but on the same boat you are, aint gonna tackle them until im ready lol
