Still hooked on FF13, just finished mission 64 with 5 stars :bgrin:
last boss help and question
[details=Spoiler]na i mean like post game. like suppose i wanted to show a person the final boss (all forms)…do i have to go through bart again? i mean it won’t be a prob post game because i already have around 4-500k cp points and will be able to max the grid out completely but still…
anyway i’m having trouble on the form that spits venom. i definitely need to switch somebody out and use a syn. is there no way to beat this boss with light/vanille/fang? i love my team but its not looking too good for them. they’re maxed out, light has omega weapon level 77 plus a maxed out power glove and it still isn’t getting the job done. the team has 7-8k hp each.[/details]
final boss
[details=Spoiler]Yes you have to go through Bart again if you wanna fight the very last boss, no save points after that. However if you die during the fight with Orphan then you’ll restart fighting Orphan
About your team, you’re gonna need a Syn. I wanted to do the fight with the same team also Light/Vanille/Fang but it wasnt cutting it so i threw Sazh in place of Fang. Sentinels are pretty useless for the last fight[/details]
And you need to unquote him silly.
lol oh i know from experience. i can’t even get mad at losing because its so epic. the graphics are amazing.
this game needs a sequel. this game is dope. a few flaws but no deal breakers, IMHO. feels good to have a great rpg on the ps3.
my top enemies in the game (as far as looks list)…
Spoiler
keep in mind that i didn’t do a lot of the missions so some of those monsters are not on this list
- flanitor
- flanborg
- adamantoise
- orphan
- bart I (with the upside down heads)
- megrim thresher
- tiamat eliminator
- kalavinka striker
- ugallu
- leyak
- hoplite
- pulsework centurion
- wladislaus (they look like deathclaws with a katana)
i missed a couple but for the most part, those are the coolest looking enemies in the game that i’ve come across so far.
Rofl my bad. I forgot Xena’s partner’s name was Gabrielle. Excuse me. I’m a little slow haha.
With that been said, Sazh = clicky
Like I remember most of the names…
haha yup. i hate that…whoever was in charge of names of places and enemies for this game failed.
also,
final boss
[details=Spoiler]the final boss doing instant death is garbage. its easy to get him down with light/hope/fang but i need to i guess hope for the best against instant death? the judgement attack seems to randomly cause instant death…and he did it as he got staggered. i don’t get it.
and i’m not under leveled…i maxed out the main 3 roles…and i had all buffs on me. and he had debuffs on him lol. wtf. i was almost at full health and the sword came down and killed me instantly. usually it just does the move where you’re down to 1hp…but not this time. argh
and i know about cherub crown but i can’t buy it without quitting the game which would mean that i’d have to face bart III again. argh.
[/details]
beat it easily
Spoiler
U have to have a syn and a sab. It’s kinda lightwork once u know what to expect. 5 starred it too.
This game was worth the wait.
:u:
final boss
Spoiler
I had a lot of problems with him at first…till I switched Vanille with SAB in. Poison wrecks the first form of Orphan. 2nd form was pretty easy compared to the 1st.
Is it possible to take down an Admantortoise in chapter 11 without using death ? Crystarium is maxed out for Fang/Lightning/Hope I haven’t touched the other 3 and they’re sitting on like 750k each.
Beginning to end, this story made no fucking sense.
Finished the game, onto post-game content.
Here are my thoughts…
First off, I just want to dispel some of the criticism that I disagree with.
“The game is too linear” The first half of the game is as linear as it possibly can be. However, I don’t see this as much of a problem. While freedom is a defining element of the RPG genre, linearity only really becomes a problem when it takes away from the depth of the game. In the case of FF13, I don’t think the depth was compromised at all. The game opened up when it mattered. Bottom line is: the whole misconception that “linear = bad” is exactly that… a misconception. Besides, is there truly any value to being able to go to Narshe, when you need to go to Zozo?
“You can only control one character at a time” So what? I also use Auto-Pilot half of the time, and “Repeat” the other half of the time… Is mashing on one button in the classic ATB system really that much better? The depth of this battle system trumps that of most other RPG’s. The challenge comes from knowing how to approach the fight, rather than simply a level/gear check. While you’re only actively controlling one character + paradigms, having control actually matters in this game.
“The game is too easy” Yes, there are tons of save points and you are able to retry any unsuccessful battle. One of the traditional purposes of save points used was to save your progress in case you died. Well, times have changed. Video gaming culture has evolved. Gamers demand the ability to quit their game on 10 minutes notice. Developers recognize that gamers don’t necessarily invest hours into the game at a time. They need to be able to stop playing on a whim. This isn’t a problem with games of other genres, but it becomes a challenge with RPGs. The developers decided that the ability to quit playing any time you’d like (hence the save points), while not forcing you to stop and use each and every save point (hence the retry feature) is important enough to change the way they treat save points. The game’s challenge came from the battle itself, and not from restarting your progress from the last time/place you’ve saved. Good call, IMO.
Anyway, here’s are my opinions on the main aspects of the game…
Battle System: Very challenging and engaging. Gone are the days of not even watching the screen while mashing on X, or simply avoiding battle because it is a chore. Battle is fun and addictive. My main criticism is the Stagger system. Stagger became the primary goal of almost every difficult battle, and trivializes the concept of HP. I guess with the removal of MP, there is no such thing as a battle of attrition, so they needed to introduce a different sense of urgency. At the same time, I would have liked to have seen some more diversity and variety in the battle system. There are other minor details that I didn’t like. Not a big fan of the Techniques (Summon, Renew, Quake, etc…). It would’ve been nice to be able to change leaders mid-combat. Being able to change your starting paradigm without going into your menu would have been nice too. Pre-emptive strike is stupid.
Character Progression: An easy A+ and one of the strongest points of the game. The characters roles in battle are unique, yet customizable. I’m not a big fan of the “Anyone can be anything” trend from FF7, FF8 and FF12. FF13 pulled off the perfect balance between giving choice without giving too much choice. I wish they would have included more spells and abilities, and a bit more variation between characters who have the same major roles. For instance, I think Sentinel-Snow should have been more different from Sentinel-Fang, etc…
Story: My thoughts on the story are very negative, and are pretty much summed up here: clicky
Plot, dialogue, screenplay, characters… Weak all around. I think more effort could have been put towards the story, especially given its production value.
Graphics Among the best ever. There were numerous times where I was awestruck by the graphics, and just stopped what I was doing to look around and absorb the details and the scenery. On par with Uncharted 2 and God of War 3
Music: I loved the music. A lot of people didn’t like it. It’s hard to compare it to Nobuo Uematsu. His work is truly unique and special. While FF13 doesn’t have all the memorable themes as SNES/PSX titles, every track was great and perfectly appropriate for every setting. Not down with adding lyrics to the chocobo song though. WTF were they thinking?
Sound: Sound effects were good, but as an audio snob, I think the uncompressed audio could have been better utilized with more surround sound content and fuller range. As for Voice Acting, contrary to popular opinion, I thought it was superb. Unfortunately, it was overshadowed by the shitty dialogue and localization problems. I think I’d blame the VA director/coach before I blame Vanille’s voice actor.
Itemization: Interesting approach to the weapons upgrade system. I like the fact that the focus wasn’t on the quality of the weapon, but rather on the stats/bonuses. Every weapon is more or less considered equal, while the player makes the conscious decision on which type of weapon he wants for each character rather than just using the best one available. However, actually upgrading your equipment feels very awkward and unpolished. I definitely don’t envy the players who are doing it without the help of a guide and the internet. The concept is very clever and I hope the implement it in future FF’s, but the implementation was piss poor.
Other points of interest:
-Not a fan of the summon system. I think I used the ability twice, not because I didn’t find it tactically useful, but because I found it unfun. The trend with summons from X to XIII is that it takes over the battle. I didn’t want to waste it on trash, and I didn’t want to trivialize boss encounters. The eyecandy is cool, but it would be nice if they took a simpler and more modest approach to summons. It’s possible for summons to make an impact on the game and be practical, without taking it over.
-The villains were lame and forgettable. What ever happened to the Golbezes, Kefkas and Sephiroths?
-There was literally zero interaction with civilians. I didn’t like that.
-I really liked the missions, but I don’t think they’re enough to substitute side-quests with a mini-story and character development.
-Post-game content > New Game+. Good call.
-Sudden spikes and inconsistencies in difficulty, CP gain, Gil gain made the game feel unpolished. It was kind of annoying, particularly when you enter Gran Pulse. The enemies get significantly harder, but then you get access to the two CP pinatas at the bottom of that hill. The feeling of excitement and accomplishment of earning your abilities and progressing your characters was non-existent from that point on.
-All-in-all, my overall opinion is mixed. It’s a good game but far from perfect. The good points are very good. The bad points are very bad. It’s not deserving of half the criticism that it gets, but at the same time, it’s also not good enough to do justice to the series’ legacy and its production value. I had a blast playing it, but it’s bittersweet because the FF series could be so much better. As bad as this sounds, FF games need to be less japanese.
I’m 10 hours in and I like the battle system, but I do wish you could switch characters during battle. Fuckers still casting fire when they have fira. WTF is that? If the battle system was turn based I would probably have never gotten even this far without a gameshark.
I was shocked when it said put in disc two though. I was like damn already? That first disc was fucking useless. Can’t wait till I get everybody so I can make my harem team. Need that Fang/Lightning/Vanille threesome.
Speaking of teams, I don’t like switching back and forth between characters. Fuck Sazh and Vanille right now, just let me play as Lightning and we’ll meet up with the rest of them niggas later. Should of had this game focus on mainly one person (that person being Lightning of course) like the old FFs.
LOL dude, I’m worried about my fuckers casting Fira/Firaga when they should be casting Fire.
Just completed Chapter 12 and damn was that annoying, it reminded me once again why I don’t like FF12, it was just fight after fight. And a lot of them were difficult as well. There is not much you can do when your enemy spams Aeroga over and over, and you don’t even get a lot of CP for any of the battles. But nothing was as frustrating as the Chapter 12 boss. I knew that if I didn’t keep trying and defeat him I would never touch the game again. I actually had to use 3 medics to keep up with the damage sometimes. Not to mention that like all bosses he has insane HP…and that bastard heals up once as well.
By no means am I underleveled either, I actually have the 3 main roles for my team pretty much maxed out for as far as it’s possible at this point.
I still don’t think it’s a bad game but it’s nowhere near my FF top 5. Since FF 12 it’s really all about the fighting. Sure, there is more story this time around, but it’s such a big soap that it can’t keep me interested. I miss the side quest days of FF VII, VIII and IX where you could get away from fighting all the time. In FF X and beyond even the sidequests are all about fighting…and then I still get my ass kicked by a boss fight after all that fighting, figures.
I’m not reading your spoiler, but I find it funny that you’re saying it was worth the wait when like 3 pages ago you were like “FUCK THIS GAME!” lol
Fira takes 2 ATB slots but does less damage than 2 Fires. It is only useful for multiple enemies. Also, the Ravager AI is set to do whatever will do the most Chain Bonus. Which is why it starts doing AoE spell once the baddie is Staggered even though the spells will do less damage.

You get the whole group at about the 20 hour mark.
