The Final Fantasy Thread 2.0 | FFXV: OUT NOW! It Really Did Exist

I adore FFVII (if you couldn’t tell). Definitely one of my favorite FF entries, yet. VI is amazing, too. Still need to play VIII, and IX. Heard so much about them too. I’m just lazy.

I’ma give Dawn of Souls (GBA remakes of I and II) a spin sometime within the next week, aswell. I hadn’t played I in fucking forever.

Man, I’m hella addicted to the Final Fantasy series right now. I have to play them all on my PSP since my PS2 get’s those damn DRE’s all of a sudden for PS1 games.

But yeah, just finished FFVII. I still love that game for the simple fact of how broken the Materia system is. I wanna get a perfect game, but I’m not going to go for it, so I decided to go ahead and start up FFIX again. Since at one point I got up to Disc 2 where they were talking about Odin destroying the world or something, but for some odd reason, I just stopped playing it.

Reading about XII makes me wanna sell a few games to get it now. But if it’s as good as you guys are saying it is, I’ll be homeless within 2 months!

All I really need to do is pick up IV and V advance cause I never have played V, and I was really young when I first played through IV on the SNES.

IV is garbage IMO. its soooooo fking boring and tedious. V was good and very funny. buy that first and save up for XII instead of buying IV.

It’s actually

10% of showing up
10% of not being gil
10% of that being the spear

In any case, it’s 1/1000, not 1/100.

Make sure you take out all 9 guardians (or whatever. The super-rare versions of some regular enemies) by giving them the gems they require so you can actually physically attack Ozma. After that, it’s really not that hard. If you have patience, wear shadow armor and Reflect Ring. Yes, you will be cursed and confused and all that jazz, but you will very likely eventually win. I ended up having a blind, confused Steiner solo the fight, since Shock doesn’t miss.

Yeah VII has always been the cream of the crop for me, but after recently playing through VIII a second time, it’s really hard to decide between the two now. I seriously love all of the characters in both games. As well as both engines. Although, I’d have to say I enjoyed Materia much more. VII definitely had the better ending I’d say, but I really liked just about all of the areas in VIII. All things considered I think the two are tied up.

I was in the same boat with I & II when I got Dawn of Souls. Hadn’t played either in a long time and I enjoyed it. They’re cool to play on the DS.

Oh yeah, definitely. Boss points for mentioning Musashi. Easily one of the most underrated games ever. I love it. Chrono Trigger is, simply put, in my top five all-time favorite rpg’s. Xenogears though…I might go as far as saying it tops everything else. I need to play through it again so I can do a fresh comparison.

^ Gawd xenogears was a masterpeice. Arguably the best rpg of all time.

That game was so deep it went to theoretical levels that require a phd in psychology. I beat that maybe 9 years ago and I remember I only understood the game for 1-2 min somtime during the ending. It was like an epiphany of clarity. Sadly, a few min after I turned the ps1 off my brain was re scrammbled and I was like wtf…

ff6 is still my favorite of all time. The music, the theme, the environment, the espers…
ahhh, maybe it’s because it was my first rpg I dont know.
I remeber seeing my friend play it at his house and thinking, “this game sucks all you do is press is A” whew, what a revelation…

ff7 is the pinnacle of this series. no questions. sadly I still have never played it through because that same friend played it so much I basicly saw the whole game before ever picking it up.
That was the first rpg for another friend of mine. He thought the whole game took place in Midgard and then he stepped out and saw there was a world map. His mind was blown to say the least. You have to understand, this was before internet games and mmo’s. They existed, but back in 97’98 they were played by only super hardcore dorks. Most people didnt even have the internet lol.

Chrono Trigger…what to say…if you were there at the time you know. Has’nt been a game like that since then, hopefully there will one day.

I guess all these are my favorite of all time because maybe I was young and impressionable, or maybe because they were my first, or maybe because by some miracle they all came out within 2 years of eachother and I thought all rpg’s were as good as these. :stuck_out_tongue:
Either way, maybe because Iam older I havent really played rpgs since ff8 (which had the best equip system ever. a REASON to fight. yay!) However, it doesnt help that all the new games I see are like these androgenous, emo-anime clones of eachother.
Eh, maybe I should try ff12…

Cool, I’m going to try this. Thanks for tips Sep

I swear I’m the only person in the universe who thought Xenogears sucked.

-SH

Doesn’t Ozma always get a free counter for every one of your actions? In any case, also get almost full Trance for everyone you want to use just before battle. You can’t be afflicted by statuses during Trance, I believe, so take full advantage of that.

EDIT: Xenogears sucks too.

I actually don’t remember the fight much, other than that I won without any input from me personally (on my first try, to boot). Prepping for the battle is paramount, as is always the case with these super bosses.

I remember the ozma fight being kinda of random, it seemed to depend on what ozma did. All I remember was whoring out Dragon’s Crest (Freya’s ability that was based on the number of dragons you killed) because it always hit 9999 even when we were minimized.

Can’t find the FFXII thread so I’m going to bitch here.

This game was sooo awesome at first, but now I’m at the Phon Coast just trecking towards Archadia and it’s boring as fuck. Nothing really happening, just journeying, no dialogue or anything. Oh, whoopity-doo, found some moogles.
I can’t get into any of the characters either, they’re all too focused on using their mysterious past as a crutch instead of having a real personality. Seems like something most Japanese games/comics suffer from, really.
And the fact that all my characters are identical due to the license board sucks too. I’d much rather have party members fill a certain niche instead of all of them be capable of everything.

I really don’t see myself finishing this game.

Since this was passed over in the other thread,

My top Final Fantasy games are as listed…

  1. Final Fantasy VII

  2. Final Fantasy Tactics

  3. Final Fantasy VI

I’ve been playin FF since the first one came out, and I remember importing the ones that didn’t make it over here to the US awhile back…actually moreso that my uncle got me these games from Japan for me, lolz, anyways.

VII was the most enjoyable for me, before VII, I thought nothing could be as good as VI. However with the smaller cast, imo, it worked well because you really got to see how characters really fleshed out in this game, especially the protaganist Cloud.

No antagonist before VII was as well developed as Sephiroth had been. For me, Final Fantasy VII brought a whole new personality to the FF series, and just simpley revamped it.

Also, I’ve gotta say that the Materia System is still to this day, the best system that Square has ever implemented…they seriously need to get this thing back.

Final Fantasy Tactics although not part of the true FF series is worthy of merit, imo it had the best storyline for a FF game ever. The gameplay/strategy for this game was phenomenal, and to me is what really made FF Tactics so addicting. I completely loved the whole customization of the characters (Yes, not an new gimmick, but still a great one nonetheless), this allowed for tremendous flexibility.

In many cases, I regard FFT’s as good as VII.

Final Fantasy VI to me was the one that really pushed the envelope before VII completely came and overhauled it. VI to me had one of the most solid storylines, however some of the most memorable characters, you just can’t go wrong with characters like Locke, Terra, Celes, Edgar, Shadow, Gau, and etc.

Especially things like Gau’s comments “Mr. Thou! Mr. Thou!”

Haha, overall, I really liked Final Fantasy overall, I say that I didn’t like VIII all that much, it was boring alot of times, and the plotline was horrible, too many damn sorceresses. However I will say that I loved their character designs though, Squall to me is still the most pimped out male protaganist while, Quistis to me is still the best looking female within a FF game.

no…i thought it sucked too. It was mad boring…i quit like 3 hrs into the game (if that…)

I really like FF12 its so much fun, I was never a fan of FF series but FF 12 is good.

I hope Square Enix makes Dragon Quest 5 and 6 come to the states.

I guess I’ll contribute my fave FF games (in no particular order, just my notable favourites):

Final Fantasy X-2
A great game with a shining battle system. Actually implementing comboes so that timing your attacks actually mean something now, especially if you can get a decent chain going. The mission based structure of the game means you can take your sweet time and go along as you see fit…unless you want to get the endings, which have a percentage completion ratio. While most of the missions aren’t too bad, some of the requirements are retarded (don’t skip cutscenes and listen to the old fogey talk are fucked up). Also, endgame content was nifty enough, unlike, say, FFX or FFVIII. And giving you the ability to change classes in battle was genius.

Final Fantasy XII
I’ve just started this game a few weeks back. Eliminating random battles and focusing on encounters have both its pros and cons. I mean, I could dodge some enemies, but if an undesirable enemy spots me/aggros on me (say, elemen-fucking-tals) I have to run the entire map with them on my back…or turn around and possibly get slaughtered. The difficulty is ramped up high enough that I’m getting a challenge, though any problems have so far always been circumvented with either an equipment change or a gambit change so far. The minimalist approach to telling the story I believe is brilliant, as you get to see exactly how everyone reacts to what’s going on around them. These are characters very much fleshed out not in what they did (like so many other games) but rather what they do, and how they do it (though I wish they’d cut back on all the walking). In any case, if the game keeps this great pace up, I’ll probably have it as my favourite Final Fantasy as I finish it.

Final Fantasy Tactics
Tactical RPG. Really broken, as some combinations are really overpowered (Black Mage + Math Skill?) but decent enough nonetheless. A great game for challenges, as the ability to mix and match is there. SCC? Themed party? Low level? Mix those challenges together? And let’s not forget gamesharking this game and giving yourself broken abilities, just for stress relief. Teleport 2 = Godly.

worse battle in ff12 is the final hunt dragon. forgot what its called. it took me like 18 hrs to beat it at lvl 60?

zodiark is nothing since it barely has any hps

missed out on zodiac spear since i dont look at faqs until i beat the game already then go back for the extra stuff=/. sucks that you have to know ahead of time to get this thing the easy way

the chances in henne mines is like 1% or so for spear. like 1/10 for chest to appear and 1/10 for spear

that weapon you get for finishing all the hunts, having all espers, and finishing fishing game is ass. fishing is fun though

i love tactics. best ff game ever

That makes two of us actually.

EDIT: New retrospective up in GT. While I’ll admit that I had a ton of fun with FFXI, and I just it had far too many problems with it for me to stay beyond level 68 with my Dark Knight, this especially holds true if you play pretty much any other recent MMO.
