The Final Fantasy Thread 2.0 | FFXV: OUT NOW! It Really Did Exist

VIII sucked magically.

And then some.

Say what you will about Cloud (and there’s quite the broadside to that barn), but at least his character genuinely grew during the course of the game.

Materia didn’t suck - but it did.

Pretty much. By that time, his inner monologue pretty much tells us he is conscious of everyones feelings but hers. The entire Garden battle, he’s contsantly thinking about how much of a nuisance she is, not OMG I MUST SAVE HER BECAUSE I SECRETLY LOVE HER.

Unless he had super secret thoughts that he decided not to think just to surprise us.

Or it could bad writing.

No, it didn’t.

Oh lord, watching just the intro of that Versus XIII trailer reinforced for me that Noctis would knock the shit outta Lightning. That guy is one of the meanest looking motherfuckers out when it comes to a display of combat ability.

Dude does the kind of stuff villains in RPGs get to do, not lead characters.

Looking at Versus XIII’s trailer, I find it hilarious that SE has finally succeeded in making their characters actually look somewhat like Asian people…just in time for a game where the characters themselves probably aren’t.

Ummm…I’m sorry, what?

FF8 was good because most the characters personalities could match some of our own.
You could actually connect with the characters aside from “haha, he’s sarcastic and sexist”, “This guy has a bunch of one liners. He’s funny.” or “oh this guy is broke. He’s my fave”

I hated FF8 my first few plays through but the more I played it the more I liked it. Mainly cause of the characters and their inner turmoils and issues that had with the world, themselves, others…etc.

FF8 would have been perfect IMO if they hadn’t of introduced the sorceress possession shit with Ultimecia. They should have kept Edea as the main villain.

It had a good battle system, good world mad, fun(yet tedious) side quests, I loved all the characters, junction system was fun. there was so much I liked about it. Then the ultimecia stuff happened and I was like. “Why?”

Also, Headmaster Cid looked like Robin Williams. Real fucking talk.

I thought VIII was kinda weak. The story broke down, and the way the ‘enemy level scaling’ worked made it a fucking joke… At least, from what I remember (its been a long time.) I MUCH prefered the magic system in VII (Materia) vs the Drawing shit, and I thought the story was much better too.

When IX came out, I thought it had a pretty decent story as well. I think that was the big downfall of VIII for me. I played thorugh it a few times anyways, but I’ve done that with every FF (except XII) because I absolutely DESPISED that battle system. So glad XIII is going back to the cannon FF battle systems. (Turn or ATB based.)

Also… Once you got Lionheart for Squall VIII became a joke, and you could get it REALLY EARLY on if you knew what you needed and how to get them. Oh well. Its not like I wasn’t entertained when I was playing it, but looking back it was the weaker of the series for me.

I very much enjoyed ff8 it’s just easier for some people to write it off as a dumb love story then to give it it’s due props plus it’s a big departure from ff7 so those 2 factors combined I think is why ff8 is generally viewed negatively. The setting of the game (futuristic academies where students train to fight ftw) was great, like sh said the characters personalities meshed well, and as far as story goes the plot twists and introspective moments were done pretty well. My only gripe is that the junction system was a little too complicated at the time at least I remembered there were too many stats n menus.

ff6>ff9>the rest>ff11.

It wasn’t even that futuristic. It was basically a military school due to the fact they were in the middle of a war with Edea.

FF8 had character personalities we can relate to?

Squall and Laguna are the only characters that are fully developed in this game.

Zell-I WANT HOT DOGS. I NEED HOT DOGS. Seifer was right, he is a retard.

Selphie-She loves trains and she is a Laguna groupie. What else is there to her?

Quistis-After Squall said talk to the wall to her, she basically turned mute. What personality?

Irvine-This guy got rejected by Selphie a bunch of times, LOL! His playboy wannabe act is definitely something we could see in life.

Rinoa-I still don’t understand the purpose of this girl. Free Timber, fine and dandy, then what? Just being all over Squall’s dick and messing up everything like the Garden fight and the Adel thing. One reason I don’t like this game is that they don’t give me the choice. I would love to have seen her explode in that missile base when she’s all, So Squall sent me here to die since I’m no good? and the space thing, hell no, I won’t even suit up to save her. You freed Adel, you pay the price.

Seifer-His dream is to be a sorceress bodyguard. Believable.

Kiros-His reason for being is to cling to Laguna correcting his mistakes and speaking errors.

Ward-Ditto but mute.

Very few relatable personalities. Maybe you are confusing FF9 with 8. FF9 has way better writing and more believable characters in it’s cast.

Good battle system?

Enemies level up with you making leveling up mostly useless. Thankfully, Square realized this and has not done this atrocity again. And there is no skill at all in the battles since smart yellow usage breaks the game. The most whorable limit break system is in FF8 and is ultra effective.

Yeah, after FF5 Butz which was another horn dog, (I wouldn’t put it past Butz to have those threesomes with the sisters in those dark nights in the inns) we had a 3 game streak of gloomy heroes with Tina, Cloud and Squall.

Zidane was a breath of fresh air after that.

One thing I must say about Squall. He catches lots and lots of hate for being emo (and he is but he’s a really cool emo and a great leader) but I don’t see the same hate for Tina. She is equally emo if not more than Squall but she doesn’t get the hate that Squall does.

Tina/Terra looked after kids after the world got fucked up by Kefka, Celis (or however her name was spelt) felt more like she went emo.
…and speaking of which, the scene where Celes decides to kill herself after Cid dies always brings a tear to my eyes ;_;

Hehe, you gave him bad fish on purpose. :looney:

Poor Cid.

Don’t the SaGa games have enemies scaling to your level/ranking to some extent?

Don’t know. Don’t play the Saga series.

I don’t think mobs scaling to your level is necessarily a bad thing. I think FF8’s failure has to do with bad implementation of that feature, on top of eight hundred thousand other problems.

Well I don’t think that giving him sand to eat would’ve changed the outcome anyways:looney:

Oh, Cid can be saved.

Check the beach for the speedy fishes and take those only. When you catch them, check the item screen > key items > good fish if you want to make sure.

If the speedy fishes don’t appear, keep changing screens till it does and give them till he says he’s alright again. No more suicide attempts for Celes, hehe.

Heh I know about the healthy fish actually, but didn’t mention them because I thought you knew them as well
