Vaan was totally the main character. The main character is not necessarily the main “hero” of the story. There was nothing special about Vaan; he was just a dude who decided to come along for the ride. He’s still the main character.
The big problem with Vaan is that, main character or not, he’s not characterized very well at all.
That and FF12 is a pile of garbage on a great many levels, despite having some very good qualities.
The story never revolved around him, or around his perspective even. He doesn’t narrate, he doesn’t move the story forward. Is there something I’m missing?
I guess you could argue that since you’re in control of him all the time, he must be the main character, but that’s kinda iffy, since he’s pretty much fodder. That’s a pretty video game exclusive definition, but I could get behind that.
And I wouldn’t say he’s not characterized very well, but rather he was barely characterized in the first placed.
Talking about rubbish qualities in FFXII, chest drop rates are fucking ridiculous. And gimme more save points you stingy bastard.
EDIT: Ridiculous quest conditions, how’d I forget those…
How about not requiring you to chain hundreds upon hundreds of monsters for weapons?
I forgot about the random chests. Good luck trying to get a Ribbon or Zodiac Spear (Especially if you opened one of the chests you had to avoid). Oh yea and rare monsters, good luck getting the Level 99 Chocobo to show up.
I’m replaying through FF5 and it still can be a mean game. Anyone else played through it?
Never played 12 because the hero/main char looks like a fucking homo. Yeah, I’m big on characters in a game.
As for a remake of 7… They’ll definitely need to add the Cloud and Zack scene as part of the main story, and not an optional side quest. I thought it explained a good amount of Cloud’s past.
I hope I’m not the only one who thinks that FFIX was one of the best FFs I’ve ever played. I loved every minute of that damn game, and it pains me that my brothers lost two of the four discs, so now I can’t replay it for the tenth time. :\
I played FFXI between finishing X-2 and waiting for XII’s release.
XII’s gameplay felt like it was heavily influenced by XI. Things such as engaging enemies in real time within the zone instead of warping to a battle area. The real time battles and having to stand next to the enemy before you can hit it. The characters automatically attacking once you set the AI/engage in battle etc.
The way parties were setup felt XI-ish. I’d normally have one character act as tank, using the provoke enemy spell. One character would use ranged attacks and act as a healer while the third was a backup tank/healer.
Even after having gambits set, I could still switch to any character and override their commands, telling them specifically what to do. This was a big plus for me as I didn’t have to worry about people not knowing how to play the game. The thing that FFXI fails hard at, (aside from being an MMO) is that it pretty much forces you to conform and have to play each class/role a certain way/equip your character a certain way or else you can forget about party invites, and no invites means you don’t get to level up.
Another pro is the time it took to level up. After I got the double exp charm it felt like it only took a few minutes before you leveled up again. (I fought in this one hidden swamp area where about 30 skeletons spawned with each giving 1500 base exp.) Compared to the hours it took to get a single level in XI made me enjoy XII’s gameplay even more.
The mob hunts. Fun. They took between a couple minutes most of the time to like half an hour. eg. King Behemoth. I never fought Yiazmat however, 50 million HP? I’ll pass. I played with battle time set to active. Was more chaotic when you’re running and scrambling trying to revive the rest of your party while getting hit for 1000 damage. Half an hour might feel like a long time for one fight, but does anyone remember that 18 hour FFXI boss battle aticle that was posted a while back? Yeah, at the time I stopped playing XI there was this one group that fought a boss for over 24 hours, and lost.
In conclusion: Fuck FFXI but after playing that game it made me enjoy XII a lot more than most people.
Now the story in XII,. Very disappointed with that part of the game.
finding it was a hell of a lot better than being forced to sit through it, thats why i love FF7, the world add’s to the story if you explore it
i think ff9 felt like it wanted to do this on a large scale but didnt? or maybe it did but the main story isnt strong enough for most people to care. i enjoyed finding out more about vivi
Am the only one that never used gambits in FFXII? I just never like the idea of not having complete control over my party, that was the only thing I didnt like about persona 3 also.
Technically, with all the conditions you set on the gambits, you probably have a lot more control over the party (as opposed to P3’s vague commands). I personally find that it’s best used to key in redundant commands (always cast Firaja vs Fire weak enemies, heal when lose 70% etc), though you can always personally override any command by pressing X.
Thus, the battle system accommodated people who wanted to automate everything, people who didn’t want to automate at all, and people who wanted to automate only some things.
In any case, I’ve heard of people that forego gambits. I myself tend not to use them in trickier parts of the game, particularly when I’m underleveled/underequipped.
Man, I haven’t played a FF game since FFX. I had sold my ps2 by the time FFX-2, FF11, and FF12 came out so I never got to play them (but it doesn’t sound like I missed much lol). I’m looking forward to FF13, but it seems like Square doesn’t have the reputation it used to.
When Square was in it’s prime I did beat FF2, 3, 7, 9, X, and Tactics though (and did all the sidequests). I thought FFX had the best battle system by far.
FF7 Remake ideas? Give me an alternate “Julius Mode” where Sephiroth escapes Jenova’s control, it takes over Cloud instead, and I play as non-Kefka-wannabe Sephiroth through the whole game.
Also, I want some uniqueness to each character other than just Limits. Without materia, everybody has Attack and Item. I don’t mind customization but I’d also like some character-specific moves. Blitz for Tifa? Someone with Runic? That sort of thing.
don’t you think it’s strange how when cloud and crew where in midgar the cut scenes would show them deformed, THEN when they climbed to the top and saw the president fucked up and doing all kinds of dodgy experiments the cut scene shows them in full human form. THEN when cloud gets fucked up mentally and all the crew are down and depressed in Calm, the cut scene was deformed again, just that cut scene.
i hope if they make a remake its made with an emphasize on the environment like the original was
Yeah I remember that. That is fucked. In the last fight with Sephiroth the graphics are made better, Cloud gets all this detail on his armor and shit. In-game battle that is.
Yeah, i always found that strange about the cut scenes.
I fucking loved FFIX. I played the hell out of it, beating Ultima Weapon and getting all of the chcobo chests. It was a nice return to the past after FFVII and FFVIII. I don’t have a PS2 in my apt, but maybe I’ll get one for Xmas so I can play some classic FFs again.
For some reason i got the itch to play some FFX again. The third Seymour fight was a breeze now compared to when i last played.
But then again, i did level grind this time around. I also started to notice some small things about the game. Like it is impossible to grind in Kilika Island early on in the game due in part to the creatures not giving up specific sphere’s like Power and Mana.
