Alex - Urien is slightly in Urien?s favor, but it?s very much competitive when you learn the ins and outs.
Imo, Alex out footsies Urien. You only really have to worry about him counterpoking your c.mp with his s.hp but you want him doing s.hps at that range. It opens him up for jump ins and EX Slash Elbows.
Urien?s tackles can be punished by c.mp whereas Alex?s EX Slash Elbows are completely safe on block.
Urien?s sweep isn?t something you need to worry about too much. He cannot use it w/o the threat of eating a fat jump in combo. Alex is often trying to get in via jump ins and if Urien sweeps at that range, he is going to eat a fat, easy to confirm combo. Also, c.hk is unsafe on block to EX Slash Elbow.
You can hit Urien out of reversal headbutts with meaty everything: c.lk, c.mk, c.hk, all mids, all highs, b.hp. It?s just that it?s hard to hit em out of it w c.lk because lp headbutt puts him off the ground so fast. It?s safest to go for mids, highs, or fat lows so that you meaty him reliably. Your best anti headbutt option is s.hp because it knocks Urien down instead of resetting him in the air. This does good damage and provides you with another free mixup. A second counter is b.hp. Meaty b.hp beats wakeup headbutt, parry, and throw. That?s pretty much all of Urien?s wakeup options aside from block.
Urien is one of the most dangerous characters to deal with when he?s getting up. It?s wise not to stand too close to him. You cannot afford to stand close to cornered Urien and be sloppy with your meaties. Fortunately, Urien is one of the very slowest characters in the game in transitioning from downed to standing. You can meaty even your slow attacks like s.hp or b.hp with 100% accuracy by watching his body get up.
Online isn?t real 3s. I am sure the matchup is harder online cuz it?s harder to tech throws, deal with dashes, etc.
Like what Duraleth said, you should never be playing a slow paced fight against Urien.
Your job is to rape him quickly, before he gets his rape-you meter
You have to be so overwhelming that the Urien player is scared as heck when he gets knocked down
Like what fire chocobo said, EX slash elbow him in the corner, and vary your range from 1/2 to 1 character length away from him, and get your mixup game going. If he tries to headbutt out, stand MP him. If he tries to jump out, Twd HP him.
And when you finally are about to kill him, wait for him to wakeup headbutt.
Is it wise to trade dmg just to get in on him? The problem of online Urien (aside from Headbutt being unbelievably godlk) is that his Shoulder’s (aside from EX) are safe on block. And what they like to do is get in there, then wait for you to press a buton and do crHP to juggle you.
Honestly, at this point I’m going to tell you to just parry the Tackles. If you’re so worried that you can’t punish his Tackles(which you could with even SA2) online, then just go balls out and try to parry them.
Normal shoulder is definitely not safe on block. No one does empty shoulder tackles.
You shouldn’t be hit with too many Cr HP launchers in the first place, unless you whiff a throw.
Urien should always be scared of Alex coming in close, not the other way around.
And if your lag is really bad that you can’t punish blocked shoulders, stop playing online. It will just ruin your timing on moves.
Hey bro thanks. I guess I’m usually hit by a cr.mk x hurricane. My friend RARELY misses a hit-confirm. I’m wondering why Akuma players don’t use the mk hurricane more. It’s the safest, from what I can tell (recovery, and it’s hard to distinguish it from the hk tats, so it can be punished consistently). OH! I need to play him again, but is Alex’s crouch so high that the hk tats doesn’t go over him and hit him from behind?
Well, if you stay crouching, the tatsu will cross him up. However, once you get used to the timing, it becomes really easy. It’s like, block the first two, then the third whiffs, so you have enough time to just press towards and parry the last two. It took me a while to get used to again when I was playing JR in casuals during SoCal Regionals but I started to get it again.
Ah, so you have to parry after he crosses you up. It is as I feared…I’m not very good at that I only see JR abuse tats against Uriens lol, but if my friend uses tats outside of a hit-confirm off of cr.mk, then I’ll try to be parry-prepared again. Also, that’s the only time JR plays 3S anymore…he plays SSF4 at home for free, plays some of the country’s finest, and then uploads 1000 matches a year
It will beat Dudley’s Corkscrew Blow as well as Ken’s Shippu.
Oh, and don’t forget, if Urien’s walking up to you and there’s an Aegis in front of you, you can headbutt right through that as well. And headbutt through Chun’s Lightning Legs.
One thing I’ve learned in my Urien matchup is: Once you have him cornered, don’t jump in. Urien players tend to something when cornered. I think what it is, is that they get scared. So if you jump in it’s almost a guarantee that they’ll do Shoulder, projectile, Headbutt, crHP, whatever. If my parry skills were better I could counter that shit. So staying on the ground when they’re cornered seems to be the best way to keep them there.
Also; new achievement for me. I was able to do parry one hit during Urien’s Aegis crossup, then grab him. I have no idea how I did this. I think I parried down the first hit, then he came close enough and I grabbed out of reaction.
OOPS…my bad. I guess I’ve NEVER been in this situation…how odd. I wonder if mk hurricane whiffs on the 3rd hit as well as the hk version. Thanks for the explanation!
