So is anyone using her at EVO?
Aint EVO at 14th?
If Poongko is going to EVO he’s definitely going to play her.
Lately I’ve seen in replays NL also plays her but I don’t think he is gonna use her.
There’s no reason to switch to Kolin if you play Cammy.
Me thoughts exactly. Maybe he is researching her.
If Capcom ever wants to make their new characters stick around they better make them stronger, otherwise no one knows they exist…
I still think Kolin will give Cammy mains nightmares so that’s probably smart of him for doing his homework.
Why do you think Kolin is particularly bad matchup for Cammy? The only thing i can think of is that Cammy likes to press a lot of buttons in pressure, which can be countered but it’s still risky (and i can’t time it for no particular reason). Cammy’s normals are better, movement too, and damage. That sad i don’t have problems against Cammy, so i always thought of it as kinda even matchup.
And i don’t think the reason why Kolin is so poor represented in tournaments is her strength. But she is hard to utilise to full potential, so it takes time to get good with her. There are enough Kolin in diamond and there are 2 master Kolin players now. That is not a guarantee that she is viable but it seems so. I hope some of this players will come to tournaments soon.
Would it be a good idea to create raw parabellum punishes and a chart for mid counter punishes for commonly used block strings? I think those would be something that could be useful in the future.
What do you mean by raw parabellum punishes?
Good places to upply counter may be useful but situationally, since block string choice is very player dependent. And its a very big work. There are too many block strings and possibilities to counter to list. Places in pressure where you can’t counter may be useful too.
The only match up there i actively try to counter block strings is Bison. After st.HK or df.HP they always fish with cr.MP and you can’t interrupt it with cr.LP. Generally to interrupt pressure i think cr.LP is better especially if you are at a distance where you can conterhit confirm.
Theoretically i think counter should be very effective in strings with 2 or 3 frame gap because people use them a lot and predictably. It’s kinda hard to stop doing them because it’s a habit and taking that trap from opponent can justify risk of using counter. But i don’t use it that way. Maybe listing them will be helpful.
An example of a raw parabellum would be against the recovery of juri’s store. At 3/4ths of the screen where she is usually safe to do so, it isn’t safe against Kolin when she has meter stored.
How do I deal with Balrog as Kolin? It seems like every match he’s just doing random shit that can’t be punished, or random shit that I block and ends up with him countering my light attacks with his own light attacks on recovery, or random shit followed up with more random shit that hits me out of everything. What’s the game plan for this fight?
First of all fighting random mashers are pretty random. Especially with balrog damage. So don’t get too salty on it.
Balrogs will use dash punch. You need to check it with Vskill, but don’t mash - try to read his rhytm, take a pause. Use on distance where it won’t connect - when if he dash punches it will parry if not he most likely will not be able to react. And you also move forward. Other way to counter dash punches is to neutral jump. Mix that up, so he has something to think about.
Block low. Even if you go forward - constantly switch to low block. Punish his low dash punch. It’s you see him doing v-skill turn - stand up. Punish overhead.
He does actually has a lot of unsafe stuff, especially target comboes - learn it and punish.
Do hailstorm, Vskill or hailstorm, MP.Counter - he will try to react with dash punch and if his reactions are not that good - you will counter.
Tic throw him a lot. Mix with traps. If he late tech - use slow attacks. He doesn’t have a reversal so he won’t be able to blow that up.
Example: st.LP, throw - tich throw. st.LP, st.MK - frame trap, confirm into st.LK xx EX.Hands. late tech trap - st.LP, st.HP - confirm or os crush counter. You can connect st.LP in most of Kolin oki and mixups.
Charge chars like to go back. So walk him to the corner and don’t get out.
Overall balrog players are ususally heavily dependent on you getting hit by their dash punches. Take that from them and they are lost.
Thanks for the tip I’ll keep these in mind, I probably just don’t know how to react to his attacks. I have played against some mash Balrog’s and those were easy pickings but one or two in particular seem to know their shit well and just blow me up every time I try to punish something they did.`
Edit: Just won against a Balrog after thinking about these tips, managed to win 4:1 in my favour but he was Ultra Silver.
Dont worry, Balrog is a hard matchup for most characters
Is Balrog top tier in current SFV just as Sagat was in Vanilla SF4? I got this game at release but didn’t play until recently since none of the initial characters fit my play style.
Also this video, at 1:29 Kolin appears to have blocked a charging attack but still took red (non-recoverable) damage? That’s a thing now for Balrog?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnz1aFdgNZg
All specials cause red and not white damage. What you see is Balrlog’s notorious TAP. Its a special which is executed by pressing and holding any two attack buttons. Longer you hold it better it gets from -2 to +7 o block, from 80 to 500 damage. Levels can be seen here https://fullmeter.com/fatonline/#/framedata/Balrog
The amount of time you should hold is literally seconds, but while holding you can move and press any other button.
And yes it does absolutely broken amount of chip, more than CA i think, but it cannot chip kill. But that chip is only on high level of charge i think so it’s not that abusable. But annoying.
It’s also throw invincible, and upper body strike invincible - something you should be aware when trying to throw balrog, especially raw throw on wakeup. To think of that you should probably tick throw balrog from cr.LK? not st.LP like i said above.
It also looks kinda similar to balrog overhead but TAP is not overhead and is not punishable - it’s mostly used with neutral or plus charge. So you should learn to distinguish them - it’s not hard just not obvious.
That video talks about tap in depth

I should admit that i haven’t watched it yet, but it was highly praised.
In the current season 2.5, yes he is.
Kolin usage in June dropped to the depts of hell. http://game.capcom.com/cfn/sfv/stats/usagerate
Sad.
