The Castlevania Thread

OoE is a bad game. It has the same exact story as the last 5 handhelds before it. You play a good guy. Good guy has a friend/meets a friend who is/becomes a rival. You play through the game, at the end the rival is the 3rd to the last boss, then you kill the supposed “mastermind” bad guy who Dracula/Dracula’s Power uses to revive/possess and then you fight Drac/Manifestation of Power. What makes it good? Nothing. Anyone who has played the last 10 Cv games will tell you, nothing is new. Even Curse of Darkness followed this same formula, and to some extent, Lament.

OoE had the same combat as the last 5 handheld games. Use swords, spears, back dash, and magic just like every other character. What makes her different from Alucard, Jonathan, and Soma? Nothing. Even Soma’s sprite was built on top of Alucard’s, and if you don’t believe me look at the way his “coat” flaps exactly like Alucard’s cape and how his arms chugga chugga like Alucard’s. Attack animations are exactly the same. So she got a new sprite, but she still plays exactly the same when you strip her of powers, and with powers, she’s basically a female Soma. What did it do new? Nothing.

The music was typical DS sub par quality sound with like 5 instruments to compose, really simplistic, loops in about a minute, and not very catchy. In fact, I can’t even recall any music (I really can’t, I’m not lying) from the game except the boring bass line from the first water area with the 3D waves, and I don’t even remember much of the track other than the stupid bass. Compare that to the great games of the past, which had more limitations but melodies we all remember. The NES games by comparison blow it out of the water. On top of that, compare that to the 100 piece orchestra you get from LoS. Have you actually taken time to listen to the music? It’s far better, not just generic “epic” music. The tracks aren’t looping in 1 minute and are well composed. It reminds me a bit of the Conan score written by Basil Poledouris, heavy, brassy, and intimate when it needs to be, which is a good chunk of the score. I frequently listen to the score that came with the LE, along with the re-recorded Conan: The Barbarian and Conan: The Destroyer soundtracks. Also, your mention of the “Castlevania gets concerts,” which concerts? VGL? They use a medley based off the older games, and previously before incorporating Curse of Darkness music, was basically using slight arrangements of Dracula New Classic. I don’t recall OoE music being included, and google finds nothing about it.

I can name off several things unique to Harmony that none of the other games did. Back dashing was used, but also forward dashing, completely changing how the game played. You played a Belmont, and you used your whip. None of the other games did that, though to some extent you could utilize whips in the very awful Portrait (so bad I never bothered to finish it) of Ruin. The main sprite wasn’t an Alucard sprite edit. The game used sprites unique to it, while the color palette wasn’t perfect since it was tweaked for non-backlit handhelds, the monsters were pretty unique and not copy pasta. The magic system was pretty refreshing since it wasn’t just “hay, magic” but relied on your sub-weapons for powerful combinations, which has been a staple of the series for years. None of the other games did that. The duality of the levels was unique too. The story, sadly, was the same old fight your rival before Dracula makes a “surprise” appearance, yawn. But besides that, it was a very good game that could have benefited from not being on a damn handheld. It’s probably the second most fun Cv game to play as a Belmont in aside from SotN Richter mode, both games giving you a fast, nimble character to cause havoc with.

And I’ll just leave this here, the best Minotaur sprite in Castlevania existence. Of course, from HoD.

There’s a lot of room to grow with the LOS system (And even some really good shit in the base system, especially Gabes flip) but most people don;t choose to explore whats there and instead settle with playing in the most boring way possible.

I blame the enemies as they don’t force you explore more of the combat. You can get away with just swiping at em a few times and then rolling away like a GOW game. Better enemies for LOS2 would make a world a difference. This is something i feel most people fail to notice tho and why games like DMC3 gets ass loads of praise even tho the enemies in it are pretty shit to. Just like DMC3 tho there’s a good deal more there if you look(Not on DMC3’s level of course but there’s some good shit in there), especially if you put the game on harder diffs.

This isn;t me saying LOS is perfect, far from it, there is a lot I would change if I could (Like everything after the castle…never should have left the castle Merc Steam…Never should have left.)

But this whole “It’s not Castelvania!” shit has gotta stop. It has more in common with CVs roots then any of the Metroidvanias have ever had and no one had a problem with it when SOTN came in and said “CV should be more like Metroid.” So this shit just needs to stop/

I will say I like LOS’s OST quite a bit but it’s not the best CV has ever done. It’s still good tho. Would have liked a few more re imaginings of some classic tunes but still all new stuff is pretty great to. I also really dig the Music Box’s version of Vampire Killer.

I’ll agree with this part.

HoD had some really shitty music if you want to go there. Also, the dash? Really? It was stupid that you have to spam dash in that game to get anywhere. Character design? Um… Juste is basically a ripoff of Alucard. Complete with the hair, the glow, the trails, and his skin color. Lament of Innocence had the same exact spell system with the orbs and everything, which it got from HoD. I’ll be the first to admit that it is awesome, but that’s what I’m talking about. What do we get in LoS? Fairies as a fucking sub-weapon. HoD was overall a great game, but the bosses all fucking sucked. Yeah, a lot of them looked awesome but…

Come on now with that shit.

And yes, I have actually sat down and listened to the entire soundtrack for LoS. It’s a nice soundtrack, but in no way does it fit in with the last 24 years of Castlevania. Sadly, the only tracks I enjoyed were the waterfall, courtyard and Vampire Killer theme. I’m not going to bring up Lord of the Rings this time because I know it’s starting to piss some people off around here. If I recall correctly, some of the music in LoS just drones on and on and plays some of the same tracks throughout the entire game. I even remember it starting to play some intense battle music or something when I was trying to solve a puzzle. Very inconsistent.

Yeah, max slimer was totally lame, but a ton of the bosses were pretty awesome and fun to fight. They were littered everywhere. I’m going to disagree with Juste being an Alucard rip off because he shares no similarities with him. The hair? Alucard’s is yellow tinted and fluffy, Juste’s is straight up silver and straight. Juste and him share a light skin tone, but then all of the characters by that artist do, except Dracula who is more cold gray. There are renditions of Juste by Ayami which has a more flushed color to the skin while maintaining the silver hair, vs Alucard who always had a pure white or yellow white which always toned with his yellow tinted white hair. The color schemes and designs for their clothes couldn’t be anymore different, except the boots but then boots are boots. White paints, silver breast plate, black shit, and red coat vs black pants, black cape, white neck fluffle, and black and gold lined vest? Totally different.

The trails for the graphics were for every character post SotN. Even Richter in SotN had them. Soma had them. Shanoa had them. Juste had them. Jonathan and Charlotte had them. Juste had a blue “glow” outline that Alucard didn’t have, it was a permanent (and poor decision) on his sprite. But then you could attribute that to the Syfa bloodline that was supposedly strong with him, though it really could have been implemented better, like maybe being a shader effect if it was on console instead of the limited capability of the GBA.

LoS having limited sub-weapons was kinda a throw back to the older games. You had 4 in the classics, in this one you get 4 as well. Fairies, man I dunno what they were thinking, but, fairies are a part of Cv lore since SotN having fairy familiars. Again, like HoD, LoS is a huge throwback to the old games if you read between the lines. You mentioned Dark Souls was like Castlevania in 3D to you, to me, it was more like what SotN was kinda like, and LoS is more like what the old school games would be like, more like Vampire Killer in 3D.

HoD has some great tunes, and some shitty ones. But the majority of the soundtrack has been much more memorable than OoE, which I’m still having a hard time remembering. HoD also stood out a bit because it went back to the chip tune style, another reason I find it easier to remember. The entire game was a throw back to the original Cv games, wrapped in a SotN exploration style. I loved it. LoS’ soundtrack seemed to channel Cv4 and the Conan soundtracks more than anything. I’m surprised you haven’t made that connection, since Cv4 is your favorite game. Cv4 was all orchestral, no synths, no rocking guitars, and LoS follows up on that to the T. I agree with the usage though, at times I’m like, why do I keep hearing this same tranquil music track over and over? There are 128 tracks total for LoS, there was no need to hear the same track every time I got to a lush jungle area or a calm part of the game. LoS to me is a step in the right direction, but with flaws. I think the next games will definitely start to get things right, and I’m glad we have a single vision for the series now compared to what we had.

I disagree with the lord of the rings thing, but I really do think they were highly inspired by Guillermo Del Toro’s art style. Movies like Hellboy and the Golden Army, Pan’s Labyrinth, stuff like that, you could see it oozing all over LoS. Both Mercury Steam and Del Toro are from Spain, so you could easily see the correlation for inspiration there. I like the new art direction, but I also think Ayami Kojima’s style was never faithfully reproduced in game and I miss her style, because to me that became a defining theme for Castlevania. I only wish that with today’s technology they could have actually brought some of her stuff to life, especially the painted brush look she had, I’d have loved a brush shader overlay of some sort. Oh well. I will say, OoE was a big step in the right direction for art design, again, sadly not being done justice by the graphics team behind the games.

I’ve played Rondo in its original form and in the PSP remake. I really don’t care for either.

When I was playing HoD, there were good melodies but the GBA sound was so bad that I think it did take away from the music. Luckily some fans make arrangements. I would like to see Konami’s take on it with better sound equipment.

OoE did have music I like, it sort of did feel like it matched the atmosphere of the part you are in. It also seems more jazzy and fast paced. Shanoa did feel like she swung much faster than the likes of Soma and Jonathan. The weapon set after DoS seemed to swing slower like the greatswords such as Claimh Solais and even the katanas were slower. I personally like alternating the hands for glyphs.

I respect all your opinions, Moonchilde. I even agree with some of them.

As far as LoS sub-weapons, the classicvanias had 5 sub-weapons. Dagger, Axe, Cross, Holy Water, Stop Watch.

Here’s one of my personal favorites from OoE

Plays right before you fight Albus too.

How could I forget! Too bad I never used it, I’ve always used Holy Water x3. The one game Stop Watch is amazing in is SotN, I think that was the only game I made major usage of. That, and the knife is just so fun to turbo spam.

I do remember the bass line from that song. The funny thing is the bass was one of the more prominent instruments in that game, but that’s about all I remember. The two links SixMachine posted jogged my memory, but it wasn’t until the DS games that I needed to have reminders of Castlevania music. If I heard the first few measures of songs from the soundtrack I’d instantly remember the tunes to some degree. One of the reasons I find the DS games so forgettable is the sound chip produces poor sound, even the PSX’s MIDI chip was pushed to higher limits back in the day.

Watched the Hard Mode lvl 1 speedrun for OOE this past weekend (gdlk). I really want a sequel to OOE. :frowning: It got so much right and was a nice mix old and “new.”

The stop watch is one of my favorites. lol in Symphony, it was the best when you used the stop watch and some of the normal enemies just didn’t give a shit. Like those Guardians right before you fight Dracula.

And yes… Richter mode + spam dagger item crash = fun.

I think Chronicles is slowly but surely taking the number one spot in my heart. Must be cuz of dat Laurel.

Chronicles is a great game. It isn’t as long as Castlevania 4, but not as short as Castlevania 1. If you ever want to run through a decent Castlevania 1 remake, then Chronicles is the perfect middle ground. Plus, the game is just all around great, and well balanced between not too easy and not too difficult. Who couldn’t love it?

Try the clock tower in the game on hard mode. You’ll go mad.

This thread needs more videos.
Trying to hunt through YouTube on a limited Schedule does in fact suck balls.

We’re talkign Chronicles, right? I had no problems with it. I used to play through the game frequently, maybe that’s why.

hey, didnt know u liked Castlevania series, my favorites r from the good ol NES, oh yeah
btw, when r u comming back to GGPO? check out the future King this friday

I thought HoD was the shittiest of all the GBA/DS CV games, by fucking far. Especially when it came to the music…Oh man, it was ass.

I want to replay OoE soon, because I loved OoE. I’ve played through all the GBA/DS Metroidvania’s multiple times, except for OoE and HoD. I doubt I’d ever replay HoD again, though.

Wtf @ Specs saying he doesn’t care for Rondo. I went through some shit emulating that game before getting the PSP version, and it was well worth it. One of my favorite old-school style CV right next to SCV4. I like Chronicles as well, and actually have the PS1 disc. There’s something about Simon’s Conan look and strange/sluggish walk animation that throws me off in that game and reminds me of Haunted Castle. I still really liked both games, though.

Ooo with all this activity in the thread I thought that there was some news on LoS2 or MoF. Nope it’s just two dudes arguing back and forth. sigh

Who has given up hope for a War of 1999 game?

Wait your shiting on hod but giving DoS and Aria a pass? com and Por I get, they are awesome but soma and his games are shit.

I… don’t care for Rondo. /shrug

Game didn’t feel nearly as good as CV1, 3, or 4. Seemed kinda set-piece-y, where the payoff is some aesthetic thing instead of something that came from how I played through each level. SNES Dracula X is way more fun.
