The Castlevania Thread

It can’t have the same level as detail as the 32 bit game could though. And honestly the level of depth in the backgrounds is greater than Harmony and much of Aria that’s for sure.

And you do realize that NONE of the Casltevaniroids can’t have the same cool stage design as Super Castlevania IV right? Most of any Castlevaniaroid rooms are “just there” because they have to be designed for backtracking. Honestly, Circle of the Moon has the best stage design in any Castlevaniaroid. The opening area is tight and winding cave system leading two much larger rooms that require some tough platforming while dealing with some super serious enemies early on. SotN’s platforming is alright. It was really more of a case of “Oh, you got bat/fog now. You can go here” The punishment for screwing up in SotN’s platforming isn’t nearly as bad as Circle’s where falling down really sets you back and can put you in a great deal of danger. I mean that Clocktower was just wicked with all that densely packed platforming going on.

But don’t think that I don’t think that Super Castelvania IV and SotN aren’t better games overall than Circle of the Moon but the castle is still the shit.

I would like to see something like the Training Hall from OoE integrated into more rooms. Those traps hurt and screwing up on one probably set you back to go through some again. Even though there are no fall deaths, it still gives the player some platforming tension that is missing from a lot of sotn-like castlevanias.

I disagree about Circle of the Moon, I had that game for awhile, and while the backgrounds were decent, the actual stage design was horrendous, mostly the super tall columns that consisted only of platform and bricks to land on.

^For some strange reason I liked that shit. Maybe I was just so damned starved for any kind of platforming challenge that even the annoying shit seemed excellent.

HoD and Aria had a lot more variety in stage design than COTM. I’m not talking miniscule amounts, the difference in level of detail between those games is pretty large. Just in Harmony alone, you had stuff like the Skeleton Caverns, the furniture room, the Light/Dark Castle dynamic (which while almost entirely aesthetic, was cool) and little details like the painting of Carmilla in the first area. HoD and COTM are on the same system, so the ‘It’s not 32-bit’ fallback can’t really be used as an excuse for that. It was definitely possible for COTM to put more spice into its castle.

And sure they can have cool stage designs like SCV4 did. They don’t have to do exactly the same stuff, but it’s definitely possible. In fact, they’d already done some stuff like that as the Castleroids went. The Guest Hall in Dawn of Sorrow for example, had some funky mechanics (The rotating rooms).

Man I tried to cop legends but it is like 40 bucks on the ebayz, also i should probably get around to playiing aria of sorrow and the ds titles, i played dawn of sorrow a bit but was getting pissed when i had to kill a boss 5 times to finall draw the damn thing right.

Damn. You right.

Yeah, I’m currently watching speedruns of all the Game Boy Castlevania games just to see what I’ve been missing, and the both the stage and backround design are far superior in those two compared to COTM.

I would totally try to get your hands on them somehow if you can. Just watching a speedrun is no way to play a Castlevania IMO.

FurryCurry: One thing I do agree with you on, is that COTM did platforming right. It actually had some platforming tension which so many castleroids do not.

Just to be clear, though, I wasn’t really trying to bash COTM in any respect. I still think it’s a fantastic game, but its flaws are its flaws.

Oh for sure, I was just sampling, basically.

Just emulate it. It’s not like Konami is going to see that 40$ if you were to buy it. Plus, the game does suck as RSG said. Legends and the Castlevania: Adventure games on the original GB are shit. They’re extremely slow, and the movement is clunky as hell. All enemies have a million times better mobility than you, which makes for some frustrating gaming. I’d like to try the Castlevania: Adventure remake on Wii, but I’ll never buy a Wii. It looks better than the GB versions, at least.

I actually got Castlevania: The Adventure for free from my EX, which I played on a Gameboy Color that I got for free. It’s too bad I don’t have my old, classic GB games like Bonk’s Adventure and Donkey Kong to play on it, too.

Castlevania: Legends is so bad that when Konami went to make a Dreamcast game with Sonia as the lead, they ended up cancelling it because they remembered how shitty her last game was.

yeah I woudlnt spend more than 5 bucks for it so it wont be happening
the adventure rebirth is a legit sweet game tho

I’ve at least liked every castlevania game i’ve played for some reason. The gamebay ones were odd i suppose. They all had a pain in the ass Dracula iirc. Super 4 looked freakin’ sweet the first times i played it (still looks cool in it’s own way), CV III for multi characters, cv2 for bloody tears, cv1 for being the first game i beat on nintendo, haunted castle had some cool music (that’s about it…), Dracula X games for being cool, snes dracula X Dracula Battle driving me fuckin’ nuts, Sotn for being awesome, the list goes on but i’m tired an typed enough already.

This. Castlevania is basically the reason I started playing video games and I’ve liked something about almost all of them, but Legends is a genuine piece of shit. Most boring game ever. I never wanted to be done with a CV so badly.

Belmont’s Revenge however is fantastic. Great level design, good use of subweapons, and a great soundtrack. I like Adventute too but I got it when I was a kid so maybe that’s why.

Just got Lords of Shadow today, it’s great.

I prefer linear ones, (like this one) compared to Castleroids, but I still do like a little backtracking.

So I officially own I, III, IV, SOTN and Lords.

I had Circle of the Moon, but sold it again, but I’m not opposed to getting it or the other GBA ones if I get a GBA player for my Gamecube.

Does the Gamecube or Wii (don’t have one of these) have a DS adapter similar to the GBA adapter for GC? Because Ecclesia and Portrait look pretty sick. I don’t even have a DS…:frowning:

I’ll eventually get Simon’s Quest again just for the lolz and for old times sake with my dad.

Lament of Innocence I rented once, wasn’t terrible, never played Curse of Darkness.

Dracula X is pretty much the only console Castlevania game of utter importance that I think I should purchase. Except for perhaps Bloodlines if it’s on VC.

The N64 ones can pretty much eat a dick.

Haha yall of course were right, Legends is a pretty lollin game. WTF ZOMBIE CANDLES since we all have a Pavlovian response to whipping candles I probably hit the zombie ones about 4 times in a row each time.

SCIV, SotN, Aria, CIII, LoS, CotM, and OoE…

I don’t give two shits over a fuck about any other Castlevania that’s previously come out…

That said, I’m about 25% on buying a 3DS… Better than the 0% I was when that shit launched.

You’re doing yourself a grave injustice by not playing Castlevania 3.

Doesn’t he have CIII(3) listed?

Either way, I wouldn’t put Aria, CotM, and OoE up there with games worth playing vs not playing. I mean shit, Vampire Killer, Cv1, HoD(GBA not that online garbage) Cv2, all far better than the crap listed above. I’d even go so far as to say VK needs to be up there more than any of them, considering it’s the original.
