The Castlevania Thread

Oh he does haha. I must’ve not been wearing my glasses. That looked like CVII.

Damn. Reading these posts makes me feel like I’m the only one on the planet that actually liked Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow. It’s a shame because they were good games. Sure HoD might have been quite easy, but it has one of my favorite castles, along with SotN and AoS, not to mention the sound track is great.

I do like a bunch of other CVs, but HoD and AoS are my favorite on the GBA. CotM was great, but alot of the game was forgettable to me, other than the DSS system.

Castleroids?? What is this? Scott Steiner beating up Dracula saying “Heh” with each hit?

Now I’m expecting it to be him under that mask in Splatterhouse too.

HoD is among my top favorites along with Simon’s Quest and Vampire Killer. Of course, I also like SotN, timeless game, and as far as level based Cv goes, Cv3 can’t be beat.

You know what makes HoD so bad ass? You’re the grandson of Simon fucking Belmont. The game has tons of throw backs and fan service to previous games, and follows in the foot steps of Simon’s Quest. Quest, find Dracula’s parts, and kick his ass after they come together. All the little background homages to previous Castlevania games, and the only Belmont to have magic from Sypha’s bloodline coursing through his veins. The game had tons of cool bosses, and great art design. Melty fucking zombies? Hell yes!

You know how it ties into Simon’s Quest? Which is a totally great game, too. Only game to have the true flame whip. Tons of cool side weapons, lots of shit to explore. Awesome atmosphere. Towns man, towns with crazy mother fucking people who say crazy shit. Blame it on the curse. Though people say Simon’s Quest was a departure from the formula, lets see how it ties into…

Vampire fucking Killer. You know what makes this game great? How it completely set the theme for Simon’s Quest. What’s that, you get a fucking shield? Like Dracula’s rib? Hell yes. Lots of shit to explore, and quest? Fuck yeah. Ridiculously hard enemies in ridiculously retarded places and total ass rape if you aren’t ready for them? That’s right. Vampire Killer, the first game in the series, set the stage for the wide open, exploratory Castlevania adventure style.

VK -> SQ -> HoD. Simon’s first quest, Simon’s second quest, and Juste tying up Simon’s loose ends and busting up what little power ol’ Dracula had left over after Simon resurrected him just to kill his ass again. Then his grand son giving his ghost the fucking beat down. Not only are these games tied by style, but they’re tied by direct story.

So fuck all the HoD naysayers. HoD was the last true Castlevania. Fuck powdered wig faggots and fuck swords.

And to all the people who say HoD is easy, try playing the game on Juste Must Die mode.

  1. No weapon upgrades. You can find them and get them for completion, but do not use them.
  2. No armor. No accessories. Pick them up for completion, but do not equip them.
  3. Remove your default equipment.
  4. You can use side weapons.
  5. No magic fusion.
  6. NO ITEMS. This means, no potions to heal!
  7. Health and magic ups are ok, because you’ll need them. However, if you want even more challenge, do not pick them up.

There you go, HoD just got really hard. Even with level ups from simply playing the game you’ll be a total wimp, but skill will get you through. Good luck on some of the bosses, they can be difficult because they now do massive damage.

Jesus Christ never post here again.
Use a fucking spoiler tag for fuck sake.

MOF delayed yessssnow I have more time to get LOS.

I still own both those games. Skip them. Combat is shallow, many of the rooms and hallways repeat themselves, camera is awful, the secrets ain’t worth the work you need to put into to find them. When it comes to Curse of Darkness, the crafting was a goddamn joke. The innocent devils were cool

I actually think the combat was really good in Lament. Sadly, everything else was pretty bad, with no way for that combat to really shine. Even more sad, everything in Curse was downgraded from Lament.

They had a pretty good OST though. I did like some of the weapons in CoD and the familiar system was interesting. I think if they tightened up Hector’s combat with the familiar system it would have been pretty great. I would like to see a familiar system like that be used again, except with good combat on the lead character. I would love a 3d action game to have great puppet mechanics and tag team attacks.

edit: I’m just reminded myself that a new game like Chaos Legion would be pretty godlike if they tightened it up. I wanna see some Jojo-like tandem combos in a 3d action game.

Curse of Darkness really turned up Castlevania’s electric guitars which I hate in almost every other CV but don’t mind in Curse for some reason.

You actually like Simon’s Quest?

That game has way too many problems for me to enjoy it as much as the others. Could have been a much nicer done experiment, but ugh, just AVGN everywhere in my head right now. Like I said before I’ll prob get it again one day, play it once, and probably never touch it again.

Anyway, I’m almost done with my first run of Lords of Shadow, and I really like it. Negatives first.

The Titan battles aren’t very fun for me, Shadow of the Colossus did it better and it’s probably always going stay that way, either way it feels the most out of place thing in the game. Props to Konami for giving it a try though.

The Titan Graveyard looks like shit, I’m sorry, but it’s just a bunch of amourphous yellow piles of land with some stones and junk, well other than the intro amethyst crystal climbing area…but anywho enemy designs in the level were sweet, but the place looks like Hell, and not in the cool way. I couldn’t wait to get out of there.

The game is too dark sometimes, in a literal sense, not story tone wise. I always associated vampire killing in a very colorfully rich and classy environment thanks to movies and color palettes of the earlier Castlevania games. It obviously is good be be dark in certain areas, like inside the basement or attic of a castle or something.

There is no reason for me not to be able to control a camera with the right analog stick. It’s 2012, it’s been around for awhile now.

Marie’s shading looked totally half-asssed compared to most everyone elses; I guess they figured they could get away with it for her since she only shows up as a transluscent ghost. Same with Claudia to a lesser degree. Everyone else looks fine.

Where are the axes and crosses? Closest thing I saw to either was Olrox’s weapon in Ch. 8. or so.

The game was actually fairly tough on normal, which I appreciated, except for the the dumb unexplained moments that most every videogame has.

Now for the positives.

The monsters in this game are sweet, and each have their own personality.

The soundtrack is great, as it should be, music has always been a mainstay for the series.

The faeries were a nice inclusion, slightly reminded me a bit of SOTN because of that one Relic.

Most of the areas totally kick ass and have their own feel to them.

It’s fun, really fun.

The detail in this game really makes me wish I had a bigger TV. I know there has been so much I have been missing just because I wanted to haul ass and beat the game ASAP.

There is room for improvement for LoS2, and I’m going to be anticipating seeing what Konami trys to do different.

Holy shit, I forgot all about Chaos Legion I rented that just once too.

Simon’s quest isn’t toooooooooooooo bad. AVGN brought up some good points, along with Egoraptor in Simon’s quest. The idea was nice, but the practice was just horrible. I mean, when the game pretty much requires a normal person to use the power guide, that’s saying alot. The dialogue was just too cryptic, but it obviously did something right, if more than half of the series is using a similar format, in the form of metroidvania.

Incase you have seen it (or anyone else for that matter)

I sometimes liked to use the Magnes and Redire Glyphs to traverse some open space areas as a shortcut/movement option, even though it was limited to a few places in the Training Hall.

Utilizing the Magnes and Redire Glyphs to fly up over Eligor and skip to the final phase of that boss battle was pretty cool though.

Yea, but people need to stop attributing the CVroids to CVII. They didn’t go that route in SOTN cuz of CVII. CVII is an awful game.

stu jr does not approve of your post moonchile

CV2 is an excellent game, it’s just that everyone compares it to every other CV game when in reality its almost it’s own thing. I can’t really go into detail now but I will later. Let me just say that for its time, Simon’s Quest was fantastic, it just hasnt aged particularly well.

I did list it.

And I forgot to add in Bloodlines…

Bloody fuck I just realized I never played the 'Vania for the Genesis.

GODDAMNTHISNEEDSRECTIFYING

the genesis one is pretty boss, but I don’t know any man who would pick whip dude over spear dude

I might.

I’m pretty sadistic when it comes to playing certain games :looney:
