The Castlevania Thread

I love Yahtzee and all, but his criticism of “where’s Dracula” while in other reviews questioning why games are so formulaic is a tad inconsistent.

Actually I think Los is a great game. It may not be like the old castlevania games but it stands as a good game on its own and it has something that most games today don’t have and that is atmosphere that pulls you into the game. The combat was easy but you still had a lot of options and you could do cool stuff, enemies were bad ass, presentation was great including music and voice acting.

The level design was brilliant, entering one area and then the next was like playing another game the difference between levels was just astounding, the guys that made this game are some of the few that are on the right track on how hd graphics should be used. And I can’t think of any other action game that is this long and has a lot of variety like this game.

This is what men listen to.

Oh, yes… Speaking of RPG Maker, I remember playing a certain TERRIBLE fanmade Castlevania RPG in which Dracula is killed by an evil king right in the beginning of the plot, and to fight this new threat Simon Belmont is forced to team up with Alucard, an Axe Knight, a Dragon, Death (!!!) and an amnesiac witch who is actually Alucard’s long lost sister. X_X

Oh, and halfway through the story you travel to said evil king’s home dimension, which is actually a cliched medieval RPG world inhabited by talking animals/monsters, and there you fight an evil wizard named Magnus, who is pretty much a cheap rip off of Magus from Chrono Trigger. He even has his same lines and theme song, lol.

And…Yeah, the plot is just as bad as it sounds, lol. Hopefully, that game of yours isn’t as bad as the one I just described. So, what is it like ?

Speaking of CV3, I’ve been playing the Japanese version recently (for the music) I forgot how awesome that game was.

And I agree with Egoraptor for the most part, even though the boomerang with the double/triple power up was amazing. It’s still not a bad game by any means, it has the awesome music, controls and “style” after all. The gameplay still pretty good as well despite the controls taking away some depth. /fanboyism

Hmm… I wonder if the whip just stayed at level 2 length though? Would that make sub-items more useful?

Jesus… Rest assured mine is much better than that, in fact I made sure it actually fitted the official timeline without disrupting any of the main events. The game is set in 1666 and focus on a small set of characters involved in a premature reappearance of the castle. The plot is told through dialogues and cutscenes molded after the metroidvania style. I also inserted extra mythos and explanations to some of the most obscure events in other games, there are references and ties with many games of the series, with my own personal twist. I don’t like spoiling the story myself too much, cuz I kinda like how it goes. xP

If fits your style, by all means give it a shot. You can also follow the story through parts 1, 5, 8, 14, 24, 28, 38, 43, 51, 54, 66, 69, 70 and 71 of my playthrough videos.

For shits and giggles, I decided to try to one-life Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, on Hard, with my Berserker Mail Julius who can take 1-2 hits before dying – but who hits like a mach truck.

Note I haven’t played this game in like seven months. Going off of memory; rusty regardless.

DISCLAIMER: HoD is still a garbage game. Fun, but garbage.

Stage 1: Touched spikes one time (for some reason spikes don’t hurt a Berserker Mail build too much), otherwise no problem.

Stage 2: Perfect run. One panic moment when Puppet Master headed for a coffin I didn’t cover, but I cut him off before he could take advantage.

Stage 3: Perfect run, but slow. Didn’t make a shortcut that would have cut time.

Stage 4: Perfect run. I thought Brauner was going to kill me. He didn’t even touch me. I even remembered the “kick off the imp” shortcut.

Stage 5: Perfect run. Forgot I could stop Death from chasing me across the stage, but he didn’t pose any issue. I lie; his near-insta-chop nearly one shot me. But I pulled through. Hoo-fucking-ray.

Stage 6: Perfect run, surprisingly. I guess my brain kept Dracula’s triangle patterns in RAM. What was my name again?

Stage 7: Perfect run. And Astarte dropped a pair of Winged Boots, which I have like 72 of.

Stage 8: Perfect run, though Legion’s laser nearly clipped me a couple times.

Stage 9: Took a hit early but it didn’t kill me. Beelzebub’s flies gave me a heart attack with a few pixel-close near misses. I forgot where the safe spot was, so I did a bit of bobbing and weaving.

Stage 10: Died in the first hallway. I take solace in this being a poorly designed stage, so fuck it. Stage 11 will have to wait I suppose.

See I told you if you learned that boxing from Ganon you would have been just fine specs. Could have aced it no deaths.

^^^^^^ should have recorded it. vids or it didnt happen lol.

I believe specs.

I tried playing the DLC for Lords of Shadow two days ago and got my ass handed to me. It’s been far too long.

The point of being a fucking moron.
All he did was throw out references to other games the whole time,no attempt at a direct comparison other then saying “Sky is blue, pen is blue also. Pen must be a clone of sky”

Way way off point.

I’m still preying the metroidvania term dies it’s not even accurate at this point, not to mention has a metroid game even been made with that same engine since gba?

I think we started to do this over at the Chapel once and I think we concluded that Dracula was top tier because he had the best super. Decent little game, though I don’t think I ever finished it.

Obscura’s post on CV2 was brilliant stuff. I’ve always thought that game was misunderstood, but never knew quite why and he articulated it perfectly. Thanks for the links to that thread btw, a lot of good reading in there.

And while I think Egoraptor is annoying as fuck, I agree with him about CV4.

I love the 64 games. And hated OoE. I think I would have liked OoE had there been a whip wielder I could have played as. Shanoa and Albus were boooooooorrrrriiiiiiiiing!

I been playin the Gameboy remake on the wii, I kinda wish Belmont’s Revenge had something along the same lines.

Wow how had I never played Chronicles, dis thing is gdlk, might be surpassing CV3 as my favorite one we shall see. The whip is like terrilong though.

Still thinks Lords of Shadow is criminally underrated

I should actually beat Lord of Shadows. Made it to the final boss and just stopped playing the game. I should get back on that horse.

I just remember the bone dragon fight making me a little dizzy so I had to focus on what I was doing and take a break during it.

Yeah I wanted to restart LoS myself since I enjoy the game, but it’s been a while and I was stuck in the Puzzle Box, would just be easier starting from scratch.

The more gothic/serious tones and the fact that it wasn’t another yearly Metroidvania whoring, I was fine with it. Weird Konami didn’t put out a CV title last year, I wonder if they have any plans this year.

Playing Skullgirls has me wanting another 2D CV game. Are their any on the horizon, or just LoS 2?

Nope. Just Lords of Shit 2.
