The Castlevania Thread

^That’s basically what I would have said. CotM has a lot of treacherous platforming and threatening everything. Plus the bosses were no fucking joke in terms of size and bravado. Whenever I play a Metroidvania and the boss is like my size I feel cheated. I still think about CotM’s twin dragon zombies like every other day of my life. Those two had such an impact on me. It wasn’t enough to just fight one. Oh no. You fight two at once and you will like it! And like I said before CotM just nailed the atmosphere: gothic, dank, and dark.

RE: Circle of the Moon- You guys took the words right out of my mouth. That game is a straight-up classic CV game and set a standard for the Metroidvania-style that has yet to be matched. Order of Ecclesia came close, but even it could not replicate the awesome stage design and challenge of that game. My only gripe would be how broken some of the DSS card combos could be, but of course, most of the really good shit was hard as fuck to obtain, so you had to earn that brokenness.

On the topic of favorite Castlevanias. I have yet to really dig into Lords of Shadow, but my faves are:

 1. Castlevania III
 2. Circle of the Moon
 3. Symphony of the Night
 4. Super Castlevania IV
 5. Order of Ecclesia

Honorable Mentions go to Bloodlines for the new take on the old-school flavor and Aria of Sorrow for giving us Julius Belmont, aka the MAN.

So whose everyone’s favorite main character? I’m partial to Shanoa for being one of the few capable females in a male-dominated mythos. I also have to give props to Simon Belmont for his cocky performance in Judgment.
Of course I said MAIN character, so I have to disqualify Julius on the grounds that he’s just too beast…

Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyy would anyone be willing to let me borrow their copy of CotM?

My ds lite still plays GBA games :open_mouth:

Order of Ecclesia was the first time I heard Riddle and absolutely loved it. That game had so many good songs in dracula’s castle too.

there are some really good remixes in castlevania rebirth’s soundtrack

but the PS2 castlevania soundtracks are my personal favorites.

Yea as much as I shit on Metroidvanias in general Circle of the Moon is fucking boss. That’s a really damn good game. It’s really the only one i killed my eyesight over trying to play on the OG GBA, the one without the back light. It was worth it.

new castlevania game

^That was cute and I get what you are trying to say. It certainly could be used as a starting point for a Metroidvania. Certainly makes me want to pick up Demon’s Soul.

Well, just finished Dawn, it was alright but there were plot holes everywhere in that game (Why would death attack Soma if he’s dracula), also it was kinda easy (sniper soul + final guard = lolgg)

Gonna start SCIV sometime soon.

Sequelitis!!! Egoraptor talks Super Castlevania 4.

i never finished LOS. this thread reminds me i need to get back into it

And I agree with him completely. He touched on exactly the problem with the Metroidvania games.

I think I have to disagree with Egoraptor a bit on this one. It reminded me of the jump from Megaman to Megaman X (Being able to dash and wall slide made X more better and the game much easier to play). Playing through the old castlevanias and playing through Super Castlevania 4, I felt that since you can whip in all directions, it made your character more able and also made the game easier. I played Super Castlevania 4 first, but the sub weapons I always felt it should back up what you can do with the whip. It’s more like you use them to supplement your abilities. Like throwing a cross and using your whip while it’s out kind of thing. The whip was your main weapon. His point that you needed certain items to cover a blind spot or else your life would be hell is not always a good thing. Since some players can feel “trapped” and under supplied to get through an area, even though I know that the old games are suppose to be “nintendo hard” but I think the design of having the players feel able whenever is best.

The diagrams of what he showed of better uses of the whip seemed kind of farfetched. Not because I’m trying to dick ride this game really hard anything and defend all it’s level design choices, but it seemed more like saying, “in hindsight, this could have been really awesome to do”. I would be the 1st to admit though that I do like Super Castlevania 4 better than the older ones.

Also the knife has always been ass in these games imo, even when you had double homing knives in Cotm.

CV4 used to be my favorite, but then I read Obscura and KayinN’s posts on Sirlin’s forums (I posted the links earlier). Made me realize the game really is a tad sloppy. Not horrible, but not really designed around the 8-way whipping.

I don’t think Egoraptor’s trying to say CV4’s subweapons should have had a purpose; he’s trying to say fuck 'em, don’t be bound by the past, do something new around this new moveset. I loved his diagrams personally, and I’d love to play a CV4 romhack based on some of the ideas in them.

Heh, the best part of circle of the moon was finding somewhere to hide, activating Jupiter/Mandragora and then going to the bathroom or something,

what card combo did yall use the most through the game, i found myself with the salamander/jupiter FLAME ORBZ for the most part, unless parts were really annoying then it was all poison cloud.

ya no one talks about dawn of sorrow even though it was one of the best

Dawn of Sorrow is a good game. I especially like the Julius mode because it wasn’t half-assed like these modes usually are. Also, it was a great throwback to CV3.

Someone has a hard time accepting opinions of other people. Sounds like you’re more of a fanboy on this one.

The ending was dumb too.

Yeah I’m a fanboy. I’m a fanboy of playing good games without letting stupid bullshit like “OMG it doesnt have belmont, the traditional spells, it’s 3d” bullshit ruin the experience.

Nostalgia is the worst enemy of people trying to enjoy games nowadays.
