I don’t think there is a reason to get the medals other than having all the items and even then, its easier to just get them on a New game+ file
Isn’t the challenge of it reason enough?
Nope, no reason at all to have them except to be a completionist and say you can perfect them. Also note that if you do a new game+ level 1 hard mode it will be too easy since you have all your gear already and can pretty much insta kill all the bosses. I like a fresh hard mode level 1. I actually maxed out a hard level 255 too but that really is just there to say, “yea I can kill the weapon masters a lot of times”.
I wished there were more areas like the training hall. I really liked that it was more about pure platforming. How would you rank the colosseums (or at least the parts where it’s like a secret boss rush) in the games? I personally like OoE just because of the weapon masters can be a pain. PoR had the doppleganger fight though, even though it was easy.
edit: scratch that circle of the moon colosseum was the best. The last fight was against Devil. In thief mode that was awesome. On mage mode I remember I can cheese it by doing an mp max then doing cocktrice summon to kill him. I wonder if i can find my copy somewhere.
It just seems like your typical action/hacknslash/adventure game. Has its own quirks and plays a lot more differently than GoW though, GoW has me just mindlessly doing Plume of Prometheus over and over while LoS wanted you to play a bit more defensively and carefully and rewarded you for the parry. I mean sure you could beat LoS by doing Square, square, square dodge but then you often got screwed over by enemy hitstun and you were doing it the slow way while a whole more powerful move list was hiding away.
Funny I got that vibe when I played SOTN and noticed how many sprites it stole from Rondo. But I can’t really see it, maybe at the later bits of the game with that floating portal world or Titan graveyard bit but I thought the game had a pretty cohesive art style til that point.
Dude you just proved my point. GoW was mostly mindless hack and slash with a few enemies that required you to stop mashing, LoS just built upon that. I mean that’s all it could do. You really didn’t use 3/4’s of that move list of his any how. Doing it better doesn’t make it unique, it just showcases the problem with original.
Again, the execution of the game was well done, which goes along with the cohesive art style, but that’s just money talking.
There was no point in using the Castlevania name, this game would have been perfectly fine without the moniker, though still a GoW rip.
I just have a hard time telling fans of the game that they should place this because it is a Castlevania themed GoW game, and not much else.
I like the way you presented your opinion. (Not sarcastically) You are a cool dude.
RSG is right about SotN though. It really doesn’t feel like the originals and that’s readily apparent if you played Dracula X and SotN back to back (made easy by that fantastic little collection on PSP). But change isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Konami obviously didn’t abandon the classic formula so no worries.
And I found it strange that Ruga was railing hard on LoS for having areas take place outside of the Castle when that’s been happening for years in MOST of the games. Yes it usually ends with Castlevania but there are many areas outside of the castle that end up being explored. Also LoS was a super origin story to the max. I think having loose elements of the Castlevania lore worked in it’s favor. It’s obvious by the final ending that it all comes together but for now there was just evil in this land not being lead by anyone. I picture Dracula taking over Castlevania and making it a haven for all the creatures of the night. I mean how else could a Minotaur, Medusa heads, Frakenstien, Dancing Ghosts, and a Bloody Skeleton learn to live under the same roof. They had to respect the leadership in place: Dracula (and his buddy Death).
That’s basically why I feel that Mercury Steam should get another shot at Castlevania. Since it won’t be some project changed on to fly to fit a preexisting universe they can focus on building it better.
Eh I disagree. You can get through a lot of action games by selecting a few moves and just spamming them. You can get through Bayonetta with just PKP pretty easily, but that’s ignoring everything else it offers which is kind of dumb. It’s the same for LOS. I use my whole combo set in LOS, it benefits me greatly in booting my focus meter, putting me in positions that keep me from harms way, or for dealing out heavy damage. I dunno, I just disagree with you heavily on this point. LOS isn’t much like GOW at all imo.
And the CV Moniker argument seems silly to me considering SOTN and it’s offspring as Furry said.
Actually I ended up using more than 3/4’s of that movelist + Parry with dashing moves. Square combinations into holding triangle + jump often allowed me to bring most lesser mobs up and destroy them rather quickly when I brought them down. It was certainly faster, more entertaining and allowed me to clear the game on the hardest difficulty + trials with ease. I’m getting the impression it rewarded you for not playing the ‘GoW way.’
Its a Castlevania game. Just like how I consider the previous 3D games Castlevania, just like how I consider that awful Wii fighting game a castlevania just like how I consider all these metroidvanias Castlevania games. Sure there were some bad games but I don’t try to cover it up, I just call it a bad Castlevania game. This series has been having an identity crisis for awhile now.
I just hope that we all universally hate Castlevania Judgement.
http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/videogames/2165 Most recent news about CV Lords of Shadow sequel. Dave Cox tweeted an article mentioning the sequel. I think three years about is enough time for a sequel plus it could be a last hurrah for CV until the next generation.
For the record I returned Bayonetta after getting the little girl. That game became horribly monotonous and cumbersome rather quickly.
I mention not needing his whole move list because you really don’t. You can use it sure, that’s up to you but more doesn’t really mean better. I think cutting down on the majority of his moves would have worked out better to apply strategy and depth in fighting fodder.
Well I didn’t, and I was playing the game on the hardest difficulty setting available from the start. In fact I really didn’t give a damn about using any of the moves to be honest. I wanted to see more of the world the game had to offer (and the namesake castle) then I did actually wanting to fight anyone. I suppose playing how I want to and it working is a plus for the game, but the necessity to kill more, collect souls, unlock better move, kill more, get souls, and so on just doesn’t entertain me very well. It didn’t in GoW, it doesn’t here either.
Look I’m not arguing that ‘oh this game doesn’t do the Castlevania name justice’. That’s semantics.
This game, to me is GoW framework / foundation with Castlevania content.
Again, I am not saying it’s a bad game. I don’t shy this away from people interested in it either, it just didn’t do anything for me as a fan of GoW, or Castlevania.
Here’s a better article about Dave Cox hinting at the sequel. http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2012/01/03/rumor-castlevania-lords-of-shadow-2-hinted-at-by-producer.aspx I expect an announcement before E3.
Edit: I didn’t realize that Galamoth was so important http://castlevania.wikia.com/wiki/Galamoth What was once just a nod to Kid Dracula means so much more.
I loved Castlevania Judgement. It was the greatest fighting game I have ever played in the history of ever, and I hope they make another one with its AMAZING character designs and AWESOME gameplay.
Wow I had no idea.
That’s pretty cool~
Than why not just state you’re not into action/hack ‘n’ slash in the first place then? Wouldn’t it have just been easier to just say ‘I thought LoS was a fine/awful game but it wasn’t for me and I hope they go back to classic Castlevania formula.’
It would of certainly worked better than doing the tired “GOW CLONE” dead horse comparison.
I don’t think you’re reading right. Those moves in the move list that you didn’t use, were actually BETTER at dealing with most enemies in the game rather than just the staple square combo with added dodging. The bigger move list included diversity in game flow and play styles along with that light and dark system, how would removing most of them add to depth and strategy?
Youtube it then.
Oh and why is GoW the first game for you that did the kill, collect souls/orb/exp, unlock better move, kill more etc thing here? This has been a staple for hack ‘n’ slash games and since God of War is the most popular it did it first or something? Did we suddenly forgot DMC, Ninja Gaiden and all other games to do that?
Fixed. It wasn’t supposed to do anything for you as a God Of War fan.
I’ve never played DMC or Ninja Gaiden before, hence my not mentioning them.
Though I think it borrows more heavily from GoW then from DMC / NG.
Well if I liked how GoW played shouldn’t it have done something?
I just beat OoE, and honestly by the time you get Dominus Agony the difficulty is pretty much over. Using that and the Light/Dark Union is pretty much playing the game on easy mode, you’ll be one shotting anything that isn’t a boss.
I did like the early game’s challenge, you couldn’t buy any healing items for the most part so you had to be really careful and learn how to dodge so you wouldn’t get your ass whooped by the bosses and even some regular enemies.
HoD was garbage, that game was absent of any sort of …“life”. i dont know how i feel about castlevania being more similar to darksouls. im not sure if that gameplay fits the general convention of castlevania gameplay.
im outi

It’s not like you can just take Dark Souls, replace everything with CV stuff, and you have a game. I think that Dark Souls has the elements of a good 3D CV game, mainly the atmosphere. All of the locations in DS wouldn’t be out of place in a CV game, wouldn’t you agree? You have the eerie forest, castles, dungeons, a town gone to hell, etc. Then you have your enemies; skeletons, zombies, ghosts, lots of knights…all these things are common in CV. You have your giant non-boss monsters, too. Obviously, the gameplay would have to change to be more like CV, but the idea of a 3D CV that resembles Dark Souls excites me.
Depends on the CV fan honestly. That mood sounds great to me tho. I’d hate for CV to play like Demons Souls as that game did absolutely nothing for me at all.
also does Demons Souls have any kind of challenging platforming in it? That’s a real staple of CV to me, something the majority of the SOTN style games lack, and a big element that makes me not like them (among other things.)
Both DS games don’t have any sort of platforming, and that’s something that would separate a DS-like CV game from DS itself.
