im not sure. the only thing i can tell you is not once when playing both souls games did the thought of this could be castlevania or anything castlevania like comparisons or wants occur.
personally i find the atmosphere in LoS more fitting than in the souls series. souls gives me a very morbid…empty dread feeling. this is not what i feel when playing castlevania, castlevania while dark is a little bit more fantastical in a fairy tale way.
… and can we all agree that the “Source” of the LoS style game was Devil May Cry? (Which God of War ripped off of almost to the letter.) My favorite ignorant comment is people that say Bayonetta ripped off God of War, because Hideki Kamiya, who created Bayonetta, also created Devil May Cry, so in actuality he’s ripping off Devil May Cry, which he can’t, because he created Devil May Cry (which ripped off Onimusha).
If a dude named Belmont carrying a holy whip-like contraption fighting hell spawn and eventually a prince of darkness isn’t Castlevania, my name isn’t ridiculously Latin.
ah, thx i appreciate the advice man. never been afraid of difficulty in video games. however, i’m not really interested in attempting anything until i have a reliable way to record my playthroughs (thinking about buying a hauppauge, still on the fence tho.) taking the time to perfect a game is waaaaaay too time consuming and i’d like something more than just medals or achievements on a profile/gamesave to show for it.
ugh, still way too early for hype levels to rise…still pretty awesome news tho! reeeeeally looking forward to this, especially the comment about dwarfing the original in terms of sheer level size!
kinda agree but i wouldn’t call LoS more fitting nor vice versa , prob best not to compare them as both are just different kinds of games with a fantasy theme. DS is mostly void of music except for boss encounters. it actually compliments a game where you’re forced to be very deliberate when fighting enemies along with tons and tons of exploration. it’s like playing Ico except with a combat system and loot/drops. don’t think DS and Castlevania necessarily share much in common in terms of “atmosphere” beyond the fantasy setting. speaking of atmosphere, i’d prob go as a far to say that LoS has some of the best of any game in the series. gonna take a stab here and say it’s the westernization that a lot of ppl have a problem with. western games dealing with vamps/monsters are predominantly darker, meaning things like violence/sex/blood/gore are more prevalent (really…was there even any jp castlevania game that you’d consider extremely violent, dark, or graphic?) now i really don’t have a problem with that as long as it’s executed tastefully and in a manner that doesn’t compromise the story or atmosphere. why even have vamps/werewolves as your main antagonists if you refuse to tap into all the darkness, blood, and fear that made them so terrifying in the movies. the very first battle with the greater warg is a good example. so much intensity in that fight especially if it was your first playthrough. the LotR-esque music, tho ubiquitous in most fantasy themed games, fit rather well with the various settings (which are also done well.) battling a boss or enormous enemies really did feel epic, and other points of the game like the besieged village/wygol/abbey really instilled an ambiance of hopelessness and despair. especially inside the castle, the atmosphere was so dark and heavy, it was suffocating, i was so glad when i made it outta there. now in comparison to other 3d castlevanias (LoI & CoD) there was never really any point in the game where i genuinely felt unease or threatened, the music and environments both fit but never really succeeded in conveying any sort of empathy. yes it had beautifully crafted stages but the music, while fitting, was simply something catchy to listen to while i destroy things. imho, for a first try as a “reboot” entry in a popular series, i think the added darkness was conveyed pretty well not to mention a welcomed change.
Sold Lords of Shadow. I’ll hang on to my save in case I both get the sequel and it uses the first game’s save. I’ll just YouTube a walkthrough of the DLC.
Know what I want out of Lords of Shadow 2? For Cox and company to take a risk… and make it 2D, with an art style mixing elements of Yoshi’s Island and how Gabriel looks performing moves (the pencil sketch animations) in the status screens.
Surprise the world, Cox and co. I love saying Cox.
One of my favorite CV themes is this:
There are other versions too, and they all sound awesome.

I’d say this theme is in my top 5 or so. I wouldn’t be able to just pick one all-time favorite theme from the CV series, most themes from the series are amazing.
I think this one is mine
This and the Soul reaver are my all time fav soundtracks in gaming.
Speaking of.
Post up them castlevania soundtrack link bitch’s i need to expand my collection.
Anyone who mentions the oft not mentioned Circle of the Moon is a hero in my book (Yes that’s you Sonicabid). Still my favorite GBA Castlevania. Ariapokemon was cool indeed and we all know that HoD sucked but CotM just NAILED the gothic and foreboding look.
I feel like the composers at Konami were blasting this shit and head banging. Probably had a disco ball. Shit is so smooth (referring to the video above).
One of my favorite tracks from CotM. Fuck yeah medusa heads and bears! Game had werebears!
Clockwork
Bonus! A vision of dark secrets
Switching gears to LoS. It might not be as jazzy funky gothic fresh as all the other Castlevanias but some of Oscar’s work is just moving. This piece makes me want to tear up.
Waterfalls of Agatha.
Time for some OoE! My favorite DS Castlevania. I like my CV games dark if you haven’t noticed. This soundtrack just seemed more emotional to me than the other two DS games.

Aaaaaand then the bad ass song! I make the funk face for this song.

Hands down my favorite SotN song is this one. When I heard this song SotN became one of the greatest games I had ever played up to that point in my life.

Yeah for sure, I loved CotM, it felt like more of a traditional CV with its challenge and vampire killer whip.Sort of wish they would remake it for the 3DS or something.
Well fuck didn’t you see what he had to go through? I want to see YOU escape a fight with Dracula AFTER raiding his castle by yourself and come out unretarded (irretarded?).
Lords of shadow is worthy the title “Castlevania”. The game is truly awesome… and as a hardcore-die-pure-jap-gamer i can say that i was really suprised by how mercurysteam (the spanish devs) managed to make a really good 3D castlevania.
Also… Onimusha is where hackNslash began… So with that said… Please peoples don’t say that LOS ripped GOW of.
Listen, fatty. I’m saying that without the name “Castlevania” and “Belmont” LoS could have been called anything else. In fact I believe that David Cocks said somewhere that it wasn’t a Castlevania game until the game itself was well into production. The game could have been called just “Lords of Shadow” and you would have the same shit. You know what oozes Castlevania? When I’m fighting big ass possessed armors that take up the whole screen in Dark Souls and not fucking Titan quick time event bosses. Talk about lazy.
I like how you say I don’t know what I’m talking about when everyone and their mothers regards SotN as the best game of the series yet you’re saying it’s a bastardization of a game. Ever play Castlevania 2? Or did you ignore it because of an AVGN video?
Again, the game is so stock that it could have been called anything at all. How about “Adventures of Middle Earth”? Yeah that sounds about right. The music fits right in, too!
As a side note, I defended the fuck out of LoS when it was in production before it came out and I bought the limited edition the day it came out, but after I beat the game, all my hope was siphoned from me. The entire game I was waiting for a boss fight with Death (which all but 2 CV games have) and I was severely disappointed.
Also, to the other guy that quoted my post: I’m supposed to cream my pants just because Kojima “oversaw” the game’s production? You’re joking, right?
