The Castlevania Thread

PoR is my first castlevania game. i really like 2d platformers, so i thought it was kinda strange that ive never played a castlevania before.

i feel like i’ve missed out on a lot of good shit. PoR is really neat so far! after i finish this i’ll fool around with the older ones … anything in particular i should avoid though?

Yes, well… that’s what you get for being, like, 12 years old or whatever.

Get them all. Maybe you can avoid Harmony of Dissonance, but it will build your hate meter.

BUY:

Dawn of Sorrow
Aria of Sorrow
Circle of the Moon

3 portable Castlevanias that play in the same vein, although DoS and Aos are vastly superior to COTM, its still a quality game.

LoI/CoD

3d games. Both decent. Both rentals.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

The game that started the whole “time to explore this giant ass castle again” theme, and considered the best. I won’t overhype, but lets just say if you enjoy PoR, you should really enjoy SOTN as well.

Castlevania Bloodlines
Super Castlevania IV

One on Genesis, one of SNES. You can find them on emulators. Ol’ skool style 2d platformers; none of that Metroid-style gameplay. Rondo of Blood is the best of the ol’ skool 2d platformers, but it is VERY rare, so just wait for the PSP release.

DON’T BUY:

Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance

You can buy the Double Pack (10-15 bucks), but make sure you only play Aria of Sorrow. This game(HoD) is just…UGH. God awful.

Any of the ol’ Gameboy CVs, and I wouldn’t recommend you go searching for those N64 titles, which are only a step above medicore IMO.

Forget the Gameboy CV titles. Sonia Belmont is a farce, and I’m glad Iga wrote her out of canon.

Yah I whatever number the notion that Harmony of Dissonance was a piece of shit.

I personally like SC4 the best though.

Won’t argue on that one, suprisingly alot of folks have SCV as their favorite.

Add Portrait of Ruin to the GET THAT SHIT list…good DS game.

Thats the ONE Castlevania game he has

I LOVED PoR. I was like at lvl 82 and had ALL the items, ALL my weapons lvld up, and I could breeze through Nest of Evil (it’s actually pretty easy).

Then it got stolen with my car:sad:

Don’t forget to play the first one while you’re at it. You can skip Simon’s Quest because…it’s simon’s quest. But make sure you do play CV3.

Be it fate or coincidence, it’s rather funny that I see that this thread got bumped. It’s all good, because I’m on some kinda crazy Castlevania HIGH right now!

I’ve started a new file on Symphony of the Night, which I have beaten several times before. I plan on doing a “no-equipment” run after I finish it. No, I don’t mean when you get “Death-jacked,” I mean taking everything off as soon as you start playing as Alucard (God help me whenever I face Galamoth)!

I’ve also recently beaten Aria of Sorrow again for the third time. I really love this game, because it was the closest to being Symphony-worthy out of all the GBA Castlevania games! The Soul System is a freakin’ awesome addition to the game and I still haven’t found all of them yet! I also find Soma to be one of the most interesting characters in the series, because he’s the reincarnation of Dracula, has the potential to tap into all of his powers, but he’s still a human being! I remember when that was discussed in that old thread about Drac being low-tier!

Lament of Innocence is a great game! I don’t give a crap about all the negative comments that have been said, like people calling it “a Devil May Cry ripoff” or saying “Castlevania doesn’t belong in 3D!” I find the game to be quite fun, especially once you start learning additional whip combos! Oh, and the voice acting is quite good, to boot! The first time I beat it, I only found THREE Relics! This time will be different, because I want to find more, Goddammit! Besides, I hadn’t played the game in a couple of years, so I had to get used to it again.

I also recently acquired Curse of Darkness, but I’ve only played it for a couple of hours! It’s not that I don’t like it, because so far, I find it to be better than Lament! It’s because I’m still trying to beat Lament again, but find more than three Relics this time!

I also still have Dracula X burned onto a CD, which I still play on occasion. I even have the ISO saved on, like three CD-R’s!

My only regret is that my PC isn’t uber enough to handle a Nintendo DS emulator.

I remember playing The first Castlevania on GBA(Classic NES series), man did I HATE those Medusa heads:arazz:
That new Dracula x opening is sex.

Soma Cruz was badass. One of the best CV heroes easy, and my personal favorite.

LoI was pretty decent. My only problem was from a game designer’s standpoint, the game hardly had a sens of height and depth to the environments. Most of the time it was plain old flat hallways.

I also saw you talking about the “no-equipment” run in SoTN…man, good luck. For fun I did the glitch where you keep all of Alucard’s equipment…murder followed.

iono I kinda liked harmony, wasn’t one of my favorite castlevanias but I have no reason to vilify it.

SC IV, SotN, CotM definitely my faves tho

Last night I beat Circle of the Moon. SFFanatic was right, the second form of Drac was a bitch. Cockatrice ftw yet Thunderbird was pretty helpful for the floating eye part. Now that I got the 2 Double grips I’m going to handle the Battle Arena.
Aria of Sorrow is fucking fun, collecting those souls is going to take a long ass time though.

Galamoth isn’t actually that hard without gear. He doesn’t really move, so you can mist-dodge most of his shit. Dracula, on the other hand, may present problems.

HoD was a bad game? I heard it was pretty good.

It’s an okay game. It’s a horrible Castlevania.

It’s really a decent game, if you try not to think about the fact that Aria of Sorrow was such an overall improvement over it.

If you dont play Rondo of Blood, you’re not a true Castlevania fan.
