If you liked Lament of Innocence, you will like Curse of Darkness. It’s almost like a longer, more robust Lament of Innocence but with a simplified (meaning shittier, since this is SRK, and we love our combos) combo system. It’s still fun, though, and the Devil Forging system is pretty cool (and extremely useful).
Dawn of Sorrows is an overall great game, and I highly recommend it.
Symphony of the Night is the best game ever made, bar none.
i just pray that the new game has a better weapon system than dawn. i really didn’t like that the enemies dropped rare…food. other than that it was a close second to the greatest of all time, symphony
Co-sign. I also didn’t like how upgraded versions of your weapons were straight up better than their previous forms, leaving you no incentive to keep your old shit (or any upgrade system in general). One of the great things about the weapon system in SotN is that, even if you get a weapon with a higher attack rating, there are still others with different, and sometimes unique, attributes and abilities that make you want to try them all out (for example, Mourneblade is relatively weak, but it drains HP while Sword Familiar is really strong but that’s it) until you get the Crissaegrim.
Plus, it also blows how you have to give up unique souls for certain weapons, forcing you to play the game again if you want everything.
Since the main character can’t use souls (only skills), I’m sure that this game will be more weapon dependent. DoS/AoS were all about stealing the souls.
Also–
Richter or Julius-- which is the better Belmont? I’ve gotten into an argument with a friend over this, all sparked by the wikipedia entry on him–
Which is utter bullshit. Julius, at the time of DoS and AoS is in his 50s and still the strongest character in the game. And HE KILLED DRACULA.
man, seriously, i really might have to buy a DS for the castlevanias, that is the only reason i bought a gba, for castlevanias that came out for it…this series is too good, plus sotn one of the greatest games of all time…
im outi
Roberth
ps…has the black ds lite or light whatever it is, came out yet?
I’m going with Julius as the strongest as well. I can’t wait until there is finally a 1999 CV title. I mean he’s THE one that supposedly destroyed Dracula for good. So I’m looking forward to that.
And yes the Black DS lite came out in early September.
Well I have been out of the Castlevania loop for a while so I guess I’ll be picking of Curse of Darkness and then start saving for a DS to get DoS and PoR. Hehe.
For my vote, it’s SC4 Simon, seriously the 8-way whip and triple shot item was just insane. Also his crawl and supercontrollable whip was also too good.
prays for SC4 Simon to also be in POR
EDIT: Hmm what other secret characters can we expect?
SOTN Richter (Saturn version / Kojima Art) and SOTN Maria?
SOTN Alucard?
DoS Soma / Yoko / Julius / Hammer ? (He was supposed to be in Julius Mode (and be the Grant of the team), but they thought it would’ve made the mode too easy)
SC4 Simon? XD
Trevor / Sypha / Grant ? (They can use the fake clone sprites from SOTN for them)
If we compare them in terms of gameplay abilities, Simon and Richter are easily the most powerful Belmonts. Simon is the only Belmont who can use his whip to attack in either directions (including up) while simultaneously throwing sub-weapons, and Richter has a bunch of command moves (many of which have invincibility frames) and the all-powerful Item Crash. Honorable mention goes to Leon for his crazy combos. Of course, many of the things he has to combo to kill, future Belmonts can destroy in a single swing of the whip.
Storywise, I think each Belmont is slightly more powerful than his predecessor (or maybe the Vampire just gets deadlier over time). I came to this conclusion by observing the relative strengths of various re-occurring enemies from the series. In LoI, Leon has to do a combo to kill a Skeleton, and Medusa Head is actually a boss. By Simon’s time, both enemies are pushovers. Meanwhile, while Slogra and Gaibon are bosses for Simon, they’re shitty bosses for Richter (and Alucard) and just regular jobber enemies for Julius and Soma (and Alucard again because he’s badass). If that’s the case, then Julius would be the most powerful Belmont yet.
Oh, and I hope they just throw in every main Castlevania character as bonuses in PoR, from Simon to Trevor to Leon to Julius to Hector to Alucard. As well as the more minor guys like Sypha and Grant.
While I hate bumping old threads, I don’t really feel like only talking about PoR in the other thread…
I’ve been playing Castlevania Chronicles for a while now, and its just amazing. Its a remake of the first CV (its my personal favorite after CV4) with some tougher bosses, remixed music, and new pink haired Simon. Go try it out.
You know that room in the Cathedral where you sit in a chair and some priest attacks you? What was the point of that room? It was pretty wierd and creepy
