The Castlevania Thread

Damn. I forgot about all that. It has more diverse areas. Not everything is a hall and a room. There’s also forked halls, non-square rooms, and giant hall/room combos. That’s what makes CoD better.

Once you mastered Leon in LoI it got boring. And mastering his combos didn’t take long.

I only played Castlevania 64, couldnt beat it. It had such an awesome vibe. It was scary at some parts.

Aside from that I love the Castlevania art.

The same could be said with Hecotr/Trevor and their abilities in CoD, though I can agree with your point on Leon to an extent. The thing that ruined playing with Leon for me was the inability to “turn off” some of the moves and whip combos that you learned, since they went through the cumbersome task of condensing it all into a menu. Having only certain whip combos actually allowed you to chain said moves together in pretty interesting ways, and you could actually pull combos longer than the complete move set allows.

As far as your comment on CoD’s levels having those elements, LoI’s levels shared those same elements. I’ll admit that the different rooms that were in there were placed rather randomly, and that might contribute to why CoD’s areas are more diverse.

It’s like they wanted to make CoD longer, but in the stretch of things, couldn’t figure out exactly how to do so, so they just had a lot of the areas repeat while throwing in a slope or two for good measure. LoI as a whole was smaller, so of course the levels couldn’t be more diverse than CoD’s, but there were a lot of platforming elements involved, which CoD lacked completely. I think that’s really what hurts CoD for me. It doesn’t feel like Castlevania, more like a half-assed dungeon crawler with CV elements.

No game is better than SotN.

Oh Sept, you and your lies.

Fixed.

The only thing, and I mean ONLY thing that hurts SOTN in comparison to some of the other CV games in my eyes is that it was hella easy. The only thing in either castle that’s really a legit threat is the Galamoth, and that’s if you don’t know how to deal with him (or don’t have the Alucard Shield/Shield Rod combo).

:u: That’s because it gives you a choice on how difficult you want it to be with its myriad customization options. The game can also be the hardest game in the series, though, if you opt to go through it without any equipment while turning off non-essential relics.

Sep that’s a load of crap. Handicapping yourself to make a game harder does not make a game truly more ‘challenging’. The true challenge needs to be present from the start regardless of how you set yourself up. You are supposed to use your best to deal with the toughest of situations. Not stoop down to fight off boredom.

With that said, I vote CotM over SotN but barely. It’s difficult and I like the super dark gothic art style better.

Sotn has to be one of the easier castlevania’s right? I remeber 10 year ago when I got the crisagram, and a few months ago when I got it on my 360.

After that it was easy mode. Not that the game was very hard, but it was enjoyable.

And the shield rod. Broken? Anybody remember shield rod + dark shield power?

The spells are broken more than anything. Use that soul spell from the beginning of the game and it makes everything easy… and then you get items and equipment that are too good once you get about 1/3 through the game. I always thought the hardest section was around where you fight the Doppleganger and for a little while after that. I think thats the only boss that ever killed me multiple times my first time through the game.

That said… It is still easily a better game in every way than any of the 5 portable castlevanias made since then, which is too bad.

And Castlevania 1-3 are still what I think of when people talk about this series. Dont really give a fuck about the new iterations of the game.

Did anyone like Curse of Darkness?

^ It’s decent for a hack-n-slash. Just don’t go in expecting SOTN in 3D, and you’ll enjoy it more.

I found Lament to be better of the two.

Just busted out some Portrait of Ruin on a plane ride today. Great game.

I finally beat Ricther Mode today. That last Dracula/Death combo is hard when you are level 36

I only played a bit of CoD which was pretty fun but I got bored easily. It kind of makes me wonder if the CV team taking too much of the metroidvania route in 3D hurts the game overall. I like backtracking to an extent but it feels more like an arbitrary obstacle rather than some sort of fulfilling goal or more importantly a good concept of 3D level design. I don’t know, I’d almost want 3D Castlevania to be like Dead Rising or something where it’s just a room full of monsters that you have to fight. Exploring shit just seems less fun in 3D regarding CV.

OC

^ That’s because they don’t make the environments worth exploring. They need to take a Mario/Ratchet & Clank approach. Start with making interesting levels (like in Dracula X) and then work on combat. You can have a general level theme and have hidden sections and rooms and what not. Making the world seem more organic and less grid like.

lol. I played Boss RUsh mode with mith my Sisters mode file and beat it with level 18 characters. The sisters are so broken.

Thinks Super Metroid
