Yeah it was back then. Now it’s been used at least twice now since then. I know in HoD and PoR for sure. And to a crappy effect.
I heard that CotM was retconned out but then it was retconned back in (because it doesn’t seem to actually affect the chronology one bit). Silly IGA.
So the only reason why people didn’t play CotM was because of the dark graphics issue? I mean that makes sense, it was hard to play when it first came out. But it’s my second favorite Castlevania after SotN. It has some of the best bosses. That Zombie Double Headed Dragon, Goat in the Gallows, and Final Dracula, are some freaking epic bosses. Oh and all the enemies were bad ass. And since the game was so dark, it actually looked scary… like a place no man would want to visit.
Okay, so a couple of weeks ago I bought Lament of Innocence. Now that I beat it, I gotta say it was really fun. Way more entertaining than Curse. I felt it was a bit on the short side and bit easy. It was a really enjoyable experience overall. Good music, loved the whole elemental whips thing.
PoR as in Portrait of Ruin? Cuz it didn’t have inverted castle in it. Also, PoR was pretty good. I never did finish leveling the secret characters/teams to 99 though.
Thats the only way I beat Dracula in that game. Nigga was fucking HARD. I was lvl.46 and nigga was still beasting on me. Its probably the hardest of all the Castleroids(no shop for one thing).
And don’t even get me started on that Battle Arena. Still, I love the game because of how dark it is. It really feels like Castlevania. When I ran across this bridge and saw the moon in the backgrouid, I knew I loved that game. Another little pet peeve I have with recent 2d CVs is the way characters run sideways, face towards the screen. Thats kinda annoying, and Nathan didn’t do that. DSS system was badass too. Much better than this find the souls/pokemon bullshit Dawn of Sorrow had.
So I guess you guys heard about the new Castlevania named Order of Ecclesia? I believe Ecclesia is the Greek word for “church” or “gathering”.
Some say it may be a sequel to the cell phone game. I’d like to have another Castlevania with the emphasize on combat. Kinda like with LoI but not as boring. Like DMC with Castlevania sensibilities in 2D.
Actually, I was playing SotN on the PSP collection thing the other day and was thinking how annoying the inverted castle was to navigate. I got spoiled by the one-button rocket jumps of the newer CV games.
Everybody has their own tastes. As long as you aren’t listing LoI/CoD at the top I won’t knock you. Personally I prefer the level-to-level linear progression CVs to the exploration-based ones. CV4 and RoB are my favorites.
Hell, the GBA Castlevanias (CotM, to be exact) were the first ones that I ever played, so when I heard that everyone was putting SotN as #1, I wasn’t impressed when I played it. I mean, compared to the GBA Castlevanias, SotN was kind of long and slow. It was alright though.
For me, it’d go something like this: AoS > CotM = SotN > DoS >PoR. The difficulty level for CotM was just perfect with great boss fights and I loved the whip. And fighting Julius in AoS was so fucking amazing–the music and going up against summon/cross/holy water subweapons. . .oh man. Too good.
CoD had better level design than LoI? On what planet? I need to know. CoD had you running through the same rooms multiple times (and don’t even get me started on those two damned towers), and there were NO platforming elements whatsoever. You did nothing but run from point A to point B. The double jump mechanic was in there just because they felt like they wanted to put it in there. The only things I liked moreso were some of the music tracks, and some of the combos allowed by some of the weaponry.
And, I actually feel like Aria is over SOTN, myself. I’ve got a devoted SOTN fan of a friend that screams “Blasphemy!” whenever I say that, too.
