30 fps was probably a hardware-based decision. The PSP’s screen could barely handle the refresh rate of a 30-fps game so going any more than that would have made it horrible. We have consoles now that can barely handle 60 fps, so…
I’m honestly amazed IGA got the budget to do DXC. I love LoS1 but I don’t think I even sweated that game as much as I did DXC, so I won’t lie, there’s some bias in my opinion. But IMO DXC is a fucking gorgeous game, graphics, sound, etc. I love it.
I disagree about the music, other than Rondo’s version of the Stage 5 theme. I love the old school version of that piece, and when I used the thing in DXC where you could place different songs in different stages, I always put the Rondo version of that piece in Stage 5.
I dont’ think IGA could have put a 2D game on a console. Consoles seemed to have a big rubbery one for 3D and even the prettier 2D games didn’t seem to get much heat. I’ll bet some of that pressure was from Konami too, so that didnt’ make it any better. LoS1 was great, and I really love the 64 games even though I know they’re not popular, even LoI, so IMO Castlevania has a solid 3D base of games, but again, I’m biased. Curse of Darkness would have been amazing if there had been more platforming and half as much copypasta.
i wish I liked OoE more. I always kept hoping there’d be a hack that put Richter in the game or something.
The PSP’s screen does 60 fps fine. IGA never had a solid 3D team working for him.
Consoles can’t do 60 fps because the developers don’t know when to cut back on graphics. That’s a developer decision. In the case of DXC, I don’t think anything in the game graphically pushes the PSP anymore than a bunch of other games.
Actually, after doing a bit of reading up, the PSP’s SCREEN can do 60 FPS, but the PSP itself is capped at 30 FPS. Peace Walker is set to run at about 20 fps. So a game that came out years earlier sure as hell isn’t going to run anywhere over that. So again, hardware kind of made the decision for IGA.
IGA actually had some decent 3d teams in every respect except level design. Lament of Innocence would have been a masterpiece and probably THE definitive 3d CV game had it had good level design.
How much is it for that GBA player for Gamecube? Aren’t they crazy expensive?
DXC was great. I loved it. Even if you didn’t like it as much as Rondo, you could just unlock Rondo anyway. I hate that they added new voices in the SOTN unlock. Outside of Maria being playable I didn’t care for the changes.
The player isn’t expensive, what’s expensive is the start up disk because it’s a dead format and never took off in terms of home/personal use and since it’s an optical media it is easily damaged.
I actually bought mine new and have just kept it In good shape.
I’ve been playing through PoR again lately. First time I’ve played one of the DS CV games since upgrading to a 3DSXL and it doesn’t look as bad as I thought it would full screen. I also found that bonus anniversary soundtrack CD when I was digging the game out and it’s been playing everywhere I go for two weeks now, heh.
I like the music, I hate the game. LOL. It was the 2nd Castlevania I couldn’t finish out of boredom. The other, Legends. Didn’t make it past the 2nd level.
I dunno, lots of stuff about PoR bothered me. Especially visually. You know, I know it’s been said before, but at least the series has one thing going for it. For the games that do suck, they at least come with great soundtracks. I don’t know how that ever worked out, but I don’t think I’ve ever listened to one of the soundtracks and went “yeah, that just totally sucked” but I have thought “man the soundtrack is good even though I don’t like the game” a few times.
Just picked up Mirror of Fate HD from Green Man. I played it for 90 minutes and the game feels solid. The LoD combat system doesn’t fit the 2D space. Fights are way to easy with enemy attacks being even easier to predict and with area attacks now being anti-airs I don’t even need to jump to attack airborne foes. I’ll wait until I get further into the game to judge the platforming.
The cutscene graphics uses a similar style to telltales games. I found that to kind of funny. The nods to castlevania lore in this game have been a treat.
Looks like the title screen is copied from Gradius 3? No way Castlevania 4 was ever 1 OR 2 players. And some werid digging Medusa like boss? This has really sparked my interest. Makes me wonder if there’s other betas for 1-3 out there.
Yea I’d say it is worth it at 20 bucks. It’s a pretty long action game, and the combat is pretty good. Good weapons, fun bosses, an over all good time at 20 bucks.
