The Castlevania Thread

Heh I only learned about the Jericho thing after the CV announcement and I had never played but yea I hear it’s pretty awful.

The stress thign I was referring to was Ninja Gaiden 2 for xbox. I never tried Sigma for ps3, but I would imagine it’s just as stressful lol.

Titan bosses?

I’m sorry. Don’t read too much into that. I forgot you just got LoS.

Someone said Castlevania has never been about the story?

On the titan bosses,I can agree with all but the dragon.
That shit was beyond amazing.
Fucking fight actually gave me motion sicknesses.

Also if you don’t think these two compare I have to question how discerning your ear is.

First 12 seconds on the first video sounds like anything I can hear by watching any action or adventure film. Thor comes to mind. Don’t know why you bothered to link the music box… I already know it’s the best track in the game along with the courtyard and waterfall themes. Both ironically remixes from Castlevania IV.

Not really the point.
You said it’s soundtrack was bad.

The soundtrack isn’t bad. Just doesn’t fit a Castlevania game.

I grew up playing Cv too and I’ll full on admit that I didn’t like Symphony when it came out because it didn’t play like any of the previous games. I’ve grown to love it since but to me the Classic games will always be the best ones. The 64 games too are among my favorites and really did the best job of bringing the classic CV spirit to 3d regardless of their flaws.

With that said, I loved LoS. I agree the combat is too reminiscient of GoW but it’s still fun. And post-Chapter 3 the game has all the atmosphere that the previous games did. The people saying that it doesn’t look or feel like CV must be talking about Castleroids which, no it doesn’t play like that, and thank god. I found LoS to be a spiritual successor to the 64 games in terms of platforming, music, and atmosphere, and as those are two of my favorite CV games, I was pretty happy with how it turned out.

Truth be told, Castlevania needed updating. It’s without a doubt my favorite series of all time but even I was getting bored of the endless Castleroid games that all looked and played practically interchangeably. Placing the series in the hands of one single person for 10 years wasn’t the right move. The older games had different people working on each of them and that’s why they didn’t feel stale after 10 years, because everyone had a slightly different take on it. LoS is Cox/mS’s take and while there are things I’d do differently, I think it was the update CV needed. Trying to pretend like nothing new should ever be added to the series is why we had 10+ years of CV games that were average.

You can play your favorite CV games forever if you want to. But for the people in an already small niche can’t handle a change in the series, I say deal with it. I had to when SotN was a hit and it was decided that everything was going to go that direction.

EDIT: And while I’m waiting for my burger, if you want to talk about CV games that “don’t feel like CV” I’d submit almost every game post-HoD except for the 3d console ones. I can’t think of much of anything in the Sorrow games that would make me think they’re CV other than the name. OoE’s characters suck and don’t play like Cv characters at all (Albus Mode was like Castlevania: The Contra Edition). PoR was the “most CV” of any of them but even that’s saying a lot. Order of Shadows was more like a CV game than any of them. xD

I actually really like court yard. it fits the mood of that area really well.

In LoS? Definitely! The huge doors were really foreboding as they should have been.

I have to say I really loved the element of danger that was present in the platforming in this game. It reminded me of how when tackling some of the platforming stages in the 64 games, it’d make my hands sweat! Granted, you don’t die (which I think you should in Paladin mode) but still, it was cool all the climbing around.

Yeah, Castlevania needed something new, but not to a point where it’s barely Castlevania anymore. I hear what you’re saying and I respect it.

Also, you post on the Castlevania Dungeon, don’t you?

people need to approach Lords of Shadows, like people approached Megaman Legends.

can you clarify what you mean? I’m not sure whether to laugh or facepalm. <_<
Also, megaman 64 >>> Megaman legends lololoolol

All the peeps I know hated Legends until I told them to look at it as another way to tell the story. As long as the core mechanics are there and the same principles are there, people shouldn’t care if the meduim used to tell the story is changed radically. just because it has the name “Insert_Name_Here”, doesn’t mean that you should expect it to be what you grew up with, with respect to the medium used to convey the makers vision. It’s infinitely better if don’t allow familiarity to cloud your judgement.

There are exceptions and some are absolute crap, but I don’t think LoS is crap.

I haven’t got it yet, whenever I see it again for $19.99 again I’ll buy it.

This ^

By the way, the super poppy old school CV tunes wouldn’t translate well in 3D, why do ya’ll think they put Vampire Killer as an Easter Egg?

I guess you missed all the lore between the lines and easter egg tributes to games of old? Everything in the game can be correlated to games prior, even the lame fairies. Even bosses like The Butcher were from the old games, I think AoS had a few Butcher palette swaps. Shit, even the Zombie dragon was present, from the likes of X68k and Curse of Darkness. Even Castlevania 64 made an impact on them, from the Steampunk style Frankenstien lab to Cornell.

The game has a lot in common with the series, and much of the music takes a cue from Castlevania 4, being orchestral, it’s obvious David Cox does know his Castlevania and that 4 was a big influence on him. As a fan of 23 years, how could you not see that?

Plenty of music would translate just fine. It’s just, a lot of it isn’t fitting for a game in the style of Lords of Shadow. It would be like putting some of the rock style tracks from Curse of Darkness over levels like The Treasury from Cv4, it just wouldn’t work in the context. Besides, it’s supposed to be new, not a rehash, and paying too much tribute to the old music would have been a mistake. Needs to stand more on its own.

I gotta say, that’s a mother fuckin’ gdlk post. 10/10

I used to think LoS was going to be an extremely shitty DmC rip after playing the demo. My buddy bought it and I got to see and play through the game and I was proven wrong. LoS is a different take on the series. It’s really unique and so far it is a good take on Castlevania and it has a lot of potential. I’m pretty hyped for the next one

The Butcher was an enemy you killed with 1 hit in AoS. Sorry, but having a butcher type monster in the game doesn’t really equate to a similarity. Zombie Dragon? I don’t know if you’re talking about that stupid titan boss fight near the end of the game, but when I fought the Zombie Dragon in Circle of the Moon, I wasn’t bored to death while doing it. Please with the Fairies… As a subweapon? Come now… Where’s my stop watch, axe, cross, bible, etc. Last time I checked, Frankenstein’s monster wasn’t a gigantic robot spider. Just because Cox read through the instruction manual on a few games and got some names out of them doesn’t mean they are similar. That’s like me rebooting Zelda and turning Gorons into giant pink alligators.

3 songs as far as I know take something from past Castlevania games. Other than that, it all sounds like the same filler music.
