And that’s part of the problem with the most recent Igavanias, everything is pretty much irrelevant. Many enemies are shitty sprites that popped up once or twice and have 3 frames of animation, one for standing still, one for an attack, and one for a death animation. Nobles that fall in love with Charlotte in Poortrait comes to mind as a worthless load of shit that started to plague Igavania games. That isn’t very Castlevania. Now, look at LoS, with Werewolves galore, swamps with goblins - relevant because hunchbacked little shits have been in Castlevania since the first game. How about the swamp level being reminiscent of Castlevania 3’s swamp, or even Simon’s Quest where you can’t walk through it at full speed?
Low tier vampires that don’t cry and whine and look monstrous and want to kill you, Castlevania 64. Oh, and the fact you actually get to slay vampires, and not just stupid ass crap like those god damned nobles and clowns from Poortrait. Wargs are in the game, and at least they’re monstrous and tough and don’t take a single hit to kill. You have the crow witch, similar in theme to the Karasumon raven monsters from Symphony and of course, harpies from the NES games.
Carmilla, a seductive appearance, but a true monster inside. Gee, where does that come from? Second forms from a Vampire boss? Man, totally not Castlevania. What about the whole Bernhard castle, nice little Lament easter egg?
How about all the undead critters once you go to the Netherealm? Zombies haven’t been in Castlevania before? Or Skeletons, or weird shit like Corpse Weeds taking control of coffins and the dead remains? How about Necromancers, like my man Shaft from Rondo/Symphony or the “Necromancer” from Dracula XX? And really, the Zombie Dragon was epic, just like how the Zombie Dragon in Curse of Darkness was pretty epic, too. Lords was the second game to take you to the skies on the back of a Zombie Dragon. How is that not Castlevania?
You keep ripping on the Titans, but Castlevania has had Titan bosses since Symphony, Galamoth come to mind? Or the massive Steam Knight from Harmony? Or any number of gigantic bosses from the DS games, like Menace from Dawn? The game even had 2 Knight battles, Bloodlines, anyone?
You have Sword Wraiths, gee never had anything similar to that from Symphony or any of those games huh?
C’mon man, you’re really grasping at straws. The game pulls from every Castlevania to date. So you don’t get a cross sub-weapon, how would it be any different in 3D than the Knife? Each sub-weapon in Lords has a purpose and is usually a weakness to many enemies, what would a cross have added? Even that summoned Demoness was similar to Power of Sire or any number of monsters Soma and Shanoa could pull from thin air. There is such a thing as too much, and what Lords needed to be was more focused because it had a lot riding on it being a reboot. It needed to be successful, not have everything to satiate every aspect of Castlevania and lose focus and end up being a poor game.
I could go on and on and on, I could correlate every aspect of Lords to something from the past games. Shit, it even had the friend/rival that the last hundred Igavanias (and Circle of the Moon) did, but at least this one didn’t make you fight him, Praise the Sun.
Also, man the music again? Did you really listen to the music, because there is nothing generic about it, nor do any of the songs equate repetitive filler. The composer knows his stuff, and you can tell he actually knows how to orchestrate and write for orchestra. That’s something a lot of Japanese game composers in general don’t do well or can’t really do. I wonder if you really understand a lot behind the music writing process and would understand Generic Song A from Decent Song B. I think all you hear is OMG BIG FUCKING ORCHESTRA AND CHOIR and equate it to being nothing more than something like 300 or something. What do you want from the soundtrack? It was orchestral, orchestral has a sound to it, I don’t know what else you wanted from it. Thematically it was fine, as a stand alone soundtrack outside of the game context, it’s fine, within game context, it is fine though they reused too many tracks too many times.
But whatever. You don’t really back up any of your claims to why Lords isn’t Castlevania other than saying it’s Lord of the Rings when you draw no comparison to prove otherwise. In fact there seems little to draw from since even the Castle has no inspiration from the fortresses in the Rings movies, nor do the monster designs other than the Goblins. You simply say Titans and sub-weapons, and that you can do better.
Edit Oh and the cross, actually one aspect of it from Symphony did make an appearance of sorts, at least when you’re using Light power and execute the Holy Light, which is when he does a massive blast of light from the Cross hilt. Very similar to the light blast from a Holy Cross sub-weapon item crash. Would the Bible have actually been a good idea as a sub-weapon? What would he do with it, slam it on people? I bet that would piss a lot of Americans off. Stop Watch, would that have been a good idea in the game context? I doubt it, maybe to solve puzzles but otherwise… it isn’t a 2D game on a fixed plane where movement within a short amount of time is easy. Also, would it make sense for a lot of stop watches to litter the country side? Weapons like knives makes sense. Within the game context, captured fairies that monsters find tasty make sense. Shards of magical gems makes sense. Axes would make sense, but an arced ranged weapon would not work well in 3D without a lame auto lock-on. Think of the context.
