I don’t think boxing will die, but it used to be really mainstream. A sport that everyone watched.
I appreciate Floyd’s body positioning, maneuvering, spacing, all that. However I don’t know how even the most hardcore boxing fan could support his repeated use of clinching to get out of danger. Or how Bernard Hopkins used it, how some clinch and lean their bodyweight on the boxer. I mean this isn’t fucking wrestling. Points should be docked right away, it is horrible for the sport.
Well since this is the boxing thread is anyone trying to see that movie Southpaw? I am looking forward to seeing it. Also does anyone remember that show called The Contender, I guess it was like the boxing version of The Ultimate Fighter. I was watching that a few weeks ago. Some interesting stuff.
Also if you haven’t seen Champs, then check it out. Its interesting to see a more ugly side of boxing. Tyson, B Hop and Holyfield pretty much confirm how corrupt boxing is (Tyson getting 100k cash from King every time he KOs someone in the first round). Anyway when I am not looking for fights I watch other stuff about boxing. Lights Out was a good show and I wish they had a season 2.

Why the fuck do people think that going all action packed takes no intelligence/technique/skill at all? It takes allot of skill to be able to get in on your opponent and overpower him. No one disagrees about the greatness of technique but at the end of the day people do spend allot of money to be entertained and just wowed the whole show… no one just pays money for a fight and not care about action being displayed. The people complaining about the amount of clinching in that fight have a right to do so because that is illegal when over used, but here it was used as one of the biggest nullifiers. There is no technique at all in clinching your opponent, if that was the case then most of pac’s opponents would have done that to prevent barrages. Come on man, you guys who are all happy about your predictions of floyd winning have to be honest enough to admit that part of the fight was seriously off.
that fight was exactttttly how i thought it was gonna play out. if it went the distance this is exactly what i expected. it does take technique and ring intelligence to know when to use it to your advantage. just cause money clinches doesnt mean he scores on cards. he was stopping manny from getting any sort of momentum. manny had his chances in the corners, by money was too quick and once he got to the center of the ring in like .5 seconds he used the clinching to stop manny from pressuring him.
*I think no one will argue with you that clinches take away from the excitement of fights unless the two guys are working hard on the inside.
I also don’t think anyone here is saying action pack styles take no skill/technique/intelligence. I think most of us here know better than that. However, I think the point some people were trying to make is that the general public wants to see Gatti vs Ward or Hearns vs Hagler style wars and aren’t open enough for trying to spot the brilliance in more clinical “slick” style of boxing.
Was Floyd clinching in the early rounds stifling and lame? Yeah, but we all got what purpose it served from a strategic standpoint. Even if Floyd got deducted 1 or 2 points by the Ref for excessive clinching he still would have won by unanimous decision. Even with him being fairly penalized for the tactic, him employing the tactic would have been worth it’s weight in penalties from a strategic standpoint. *
Boxing isn’t dead, but it ain’t no where near the level of OVERALL hype as MMA. Especially now the whole Mayweather/Pacquiao scenario is over with.
