As for the āwho has more to loseā argument, Mayweather definitely has more to lose. Manny may feel pressured by his need to prove himself and represent his nationās pride, but at the end of the day his fans will still cheer for him regardless. An underdog who reached for the stars and fell back to earth.
On the other hand Floydās entire brand is based on being undefeated, and outside a few sycophants and confidants no one really likes him. The people who are bonafide fans are usually the ones who like him for the wrong reasons, because he represents a lifestyle they crave. Heās like that popular douchebag in high school who everyone acts like theyāre friends with, until he gets sonned and everyone canāt wait to rag on him.
It isnāt like the average person or causual boxing fan interested in this historic fight cares that much about Floydās technical skills and milestones, theyāre more focused on the outcome and repercussions. Their interest in Mayweather is based on either monetary gain or superficial hype.
How much of Floydās douchebaggery being an act or being real is always up for debate, but the reality is- heās liked or ātoleratedā for being a winner, and itās one thing to be a braggart and undefeated, but if he gets rocked his āshowmanshipā will look pathetic to the general population, many of whom for years already labeled Floyd a coward who was afraid of a bad outcome with prime Manny. The angle of the invincible playboy millionaire wonāt work anymore, which will certainly affect his brand.
Yeah, one of the reasons Iād like to see him laid out are because of ducking that fight with Manny. This could have been such a better fight if itād been earlier.
Willie Pep fought tougher competition and was a better all around fighter. Locche is like the slipperiest man in boxing history but he isnāt the best defensive fighter. I also have to say Charley Burley is a better defensive fighter than Locche because he didnāt need to move. He could have been a statue and heād punish anyone who tried to step up.
Tougher competition is subjective because boxing is a huge deal in South America. You canāt say people are tougher just because theyāre North American and you know more about that scene and itās history. Wellā¦ I guess you can say that but it doesnāt make it correct. It just means youāre biased. All-round Iāll give you though, Nicolino was not all-round which is why I claimed him as ādefensive.ā Nicolino is criminally underrated because he didnāt speak English and didnāt travel much but he fought a lot of the best of his period in Argentina, hence being The Ring Magazines LINEAL champ for those years.
Willie Pep was a genius, his sheer wins were ridiculous, I donāt like comparing greats like that but for the sake of it the reason I stated Nicolino over Pep for that particular accolade is because he was PURELY defensive. Most minutes in the ring, he won fights feathering his opponents for points. Pep was defensively incredible but he wasnāt purely defensive, he got a lot of knockouts. Locche didnāt try. No one could touch him and that was without grabbing onto them every few minutes like some fighters do. He literally just dodged EVERYTHINGā¦ Heād stand hands behind his back and stick his head out because he got opponents that exhausted a stiff breeze would topple them. There has never been anyone like him, a boxer that just stands in the ring so completely impervious that they can win every fight just poking their opponent. He was like a kid the way he toyed with people.
I took advantage of the sales that are happening around the internet to grab some new Boxing boots, as I typed in the word āBoxingā I got a little notification saying Did you mean Bling? Thanks Manny, thanks a bunch.
So much this. To this day i remember watching that fight and not knowing why the hell mosley didnt chase floyd around the ring like a madman after he hurt him. He was all like āI just showed him my power, now Iām gonna settle in to this over 12 roundsā¦SMHā
Yo i know this is a little bit of out of context but BHop is also one of the greatest defensive fighters of our generation. Also on a side note, I was talking to my pops about boxing (hes the guru of all gurus lol) and he exposed me to Ernie Shavers. This dude is the fucking man. They say hes the hardest hitting boxer ever. All these dudes like frazier and foreman and ali all say he was the hardest hitter ever. I can believe it. Just watch this dudeās highlights:
Shane said he was soooo focused on that one shot that he didnāt do what he needed to do. He had a chance, but it was like when he finally got the setup of his combo to land he didnāt really hit confirm.
I mean if Kazakhstan counts as part of Russia then I would agree. You have guys like Kovalev, the Klitschkos and Triple G. Thats a pretty dominant group.
Itās not semantics Iām merely stating a fact. It is an issue thatās debatable. Heās obviously a douche, but people argue the degrees of oneās character all the time.
I see Floyd as a heel, not a genuine dooche. He has a lot of money, and heās entitled to do what he wants with it, I think heās an idiot for wasting it on crap instead of making a difference but thatās a personal thing. Iām not going to tell a guy how to run his life. Heās obviously a smart guy and he plays things up, thatās how he has the money, heās the son of a boxer, he grew up in the game of boxing which is laissez-faire capitalism at itās finest.
