LOL well I don’t recall ever reading anything Sterling Gates ever wrote. However pretty much any time Clark Kent and Dick Grayson get together it usually turns out really good. It’s a different relationship than the Bruce and Clark one, more about mutual respect. Not that Bruce and Clark don’t respect each other because they do, but both have different ways of doing things where Clark and Dick tend to be on the same page. Some of the best NW stories were whenever Dixon teamed Nightwing and Superman up.
Not to say that things will play out that way and they will be on friendly terms because who knows.
On top of that, from what DC said at the con this will be the first time (Blackest Night crossover aside) where DG as Batman will be interacting with someone outside the Bat Family. Should be cool.
Im just waiting for batman to return given hes stuck in the cave man era and his physical body on our earth was fried by darksides omega sanction, but when he comes back it’ll be b insane.
I caught it on a g4 tv coverage of comic-con that hes definetly coming back and Red Robin’s all up in the world kickin ass and takin names to save his surrogate father what a guy! im pretty stoked.
reading through this thread while expanding my collection had me thinking, my DG section is pretty empty as is my Tim Drake, anyone got suggestions for good stories with Tim or DG as the focus?
Anyhow, I just wanted to express my anger at Batman and Robin getting delayed from this Wednesday to the last Wednesday in August facepalm
yeah, I think DC is secretly trying to kill people by making their brains explode by having Detective 856 and BandR 3 on the same day.(not to mention GL and Flash Rebirth) and that’s just one week.
For Dick Grayson stories, I have fond memories of Chuck Dixon’s run on Nightwing. Haven’t read it in years, so I can’t say how it holds up, but from what I remember, it’s a really nice series of completely straightforward superhero stories. I also like Robin: Year One quite a bit. Nightwing: Year One was a good read, too, but I think Robin: Year One was executed about as well as any Batman ancillary title could be (outside of Gotham Central and Catwoman).
The best Dick Grayson story ever is the Judas Contract, a close second that heavily features Nightwing is the Obsidian Age arc on JLA. A lonely place of dying and Year Three are great arcs too about Dicks past and Tim becoming robin.
All of Chuck dixon’s stuff on the Nightwing solo series is good, just stay away from devin grayson and you should be ok.
All star Batman and Robin has an interesting, more gritty pulpy take on Robins origin and I personally thinks it should be official cannon, but people think Im crazy.
Im actually about to put up all my batman comics on Ebay, including the prodigal story arc, lonely place of dying, and year three. Ill post here when its up.
I’m reading B&R, Detective Comics and Gotham City Sirens. The last one I picked up mostly for my girlfriend who is a fan of all the main characters but I ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I would. Paul Dini can’t really do wrong with any Batman book IMO.
I also really dig Batman & Robin, the Morrison & Quitely team is always entertaining. One of my favorite moments was from issue two when Damian gets slammed into a wall. Instead of drawing out a usual sound effect like “SLAM” he spells it out in the cracks on the wall behind him. Very nice work. I also really like the extremely silver age-ish circus freak villains.
Who is taking over for Quitely after he leaves? I read about it on newsarama but I can’t seem to find the article anymore.
The Obsidian Age story in JLA was pretty good. The whole Joe Kelly run was kinda underrated. The Obsidian Age, from what I remember, wasn’t looked upon too fondly at the time, but I’ve read it through several times over the years and I think it’s a very good superhero team story. Nightwing has some memorable moments as well. (The basic premise is that the real JLA gets wiped out, only Batman has a contingency plan in place that ensures the JLA will never end, and now Nightwing’s the new leader of the team.) It’s got everything a nice JLA story needs, with a good mix of classic aspects and the new school.
The Judas Contract was a decent '80s superhero story. For a while, Marv Wolfman was kind of the CLAREMONT of DC. It’s a fun read, hasn’t really aged well, but I’d say try to find it for cheap if you could.
A Lonely Place of Dying wasn’t that great, though. It’s the first appearance of Tim Drake and Nightwing is essentially reduced to a plot device so that readers can feel that the new Robin has the “blessing” of the original Robin. It’s another Wolfman story, only I’m not as forgiving on this one. I liked it when I was a kid, but I when I reread it some years ago, I felt like I was okay giving it away.
Lonely place has signifigant character development for Dick Grayson, and yes it doesnt hold up well to a discerning adult critic. But they arent really geared twords adult readers.
I played the tech demo a few months ago, where you battle a few waves of guards in a confined space as Joker taunts you. It let me know that the combat portion of the game is tight and well done, gives me hope for the overall experience. I’ll download the demo shortly and give it a spin.
Edit: Downloaded and played it, basically the E3 demo. Fun as hell though, learned the hard way guns and Batman don’t mix. One terrified status guy just waved his gun around and shot, clipping me into the red before I dive kicked him lol. Awesome game, going to have to pull some strings at our Blockbuster and get an early rental.
I’m dLing the demo now but I’m fairly sure it’s the same demo I played at Gamestop a few months back. Most def picking up ‘The Batman video game that doesn’t suck copyright 2009’ on day 1. Had it reserved for a while now.
I hope the 360 version gets the Joker levels as DLC at some point. I have both next gen systems but I am an achievement whore for games I like and I can already tell I like this one.
Picking off the guards one by one in predator mode is fun as hell. I was only spotted and shot once my first time through. I love hanging upside down from the perches and grabbing dudes to silently take them out. I feel like playing the demo again right now.
Anyway, to stay on the topic of comics, I was at Barnes and Noble earlier and saw the Black Casebook tpb, I think I’m going to pick it up sometime. I love crazy Silver Age stuff like that.
