BEWARE, the quality is not as good as the original, Youtube rushed the whole thing with the codecs compression, etc. but i’m done with editing and youtube for this week.
Hi I’m pretty new to Thor, anyway, I guess I did ok in a tourney last night, with a 48 hour thor, and a 1 week old arthur, but yeah I was hoping I could get some advice and pointers on my matches.
I play from about 1:45:15 to 2:05:05 or something, I play later in Losers Semi’s or what not but I used MODOK so yeah irrevelant to this conversation.
Couple of things I wanted someone to shed light on for me if you have the time…
at 1:46:28 or so I try to do that charge M strike into falling L, I guess it missed because he advancing guarded it, so what are some good incoming mixup options? I was thinking idk, like jump l mighty spark, call assist and then dash in command grab but it seems very risky. any safe mixup pressure I can use with thor?
In every game, if a light is blocked, I just let the combo continue. LOL. IDK why. I figure none of it is safe so just press buttons. Obviously this is stupid, but I’m not sure what I should be doing if my cr L is getting stuffed. Seems like I’m too far to catch a L mighty hurricane and not sure if I want to cancel into mighty strike or mighty spark.
2:03:00 yeah that incoming charge mighty strike M thing doesn’t work. Again.
After watching it all I’m pretty disappointed that my Thor did absolutely Jack SHIT in all those games. i really need some advicewith him. I could always just replace him with Doom but i find Thor interesting and the ground bounce assist is very helpful. Pointers?
i think you’re main problem is that you’re just not used to thor yet. Generally speaking you’re a good player but you’re doing stuff with thor that most thor users know shouldnt be done:
-Burn this into your mind, crouching normals > standing normals. The only time when standing normals are better is when juggling an airborne opponent (and in most cases crouching normals will work too but not as good) but either way NEVER do st.L > st.H. st.L is the best normal to juggle with because of its speed and hitbox but the best ways to get a combo after it is to do st.L cr.M into launcher or mighty smash or just do st.L straight into launcher. You can also use st.M but its not as good because it still has a lot of push back so in some cases it will put them out of range for a follow up.
-Never throw out Mighty thunder, its horrifyingly slow in both start up and recovery and doesnt push back on block. Even if you want to DHC thor out you should avoid using it, its start up is too slow so just stick to mighty tornado or punish.
As for the incoming mixups, im not sure how effective the charged mighty strike M is on good players. Theoretically if they advanced guard you should be able to air dash DF to get back in and apply mixups, im just not sure how much frame advantage (if any) you have after a push blocked mighty strike. Against ppl who like to hold up back, air dash DF j.L > cr.LM should be enough to get them back on the ground and punish the jump attempt, you also have the option of doing air dash DF > air mighty hurricane to grab them out of the air.
There is also SJ + charged mighty strike H, a slighty delayed mighty strike H will cross up the incoming character and an early one wont. If you factor in assists there are more mixups but im not sure how good arthur’s daggars are for this, usually lockdown assists are the best in this case. I use cold star and what i usually do assist + j.S xx mighty strike M, if i hit them i get the follow up, if its blocked then the assist keeps them in block stun for tridash mixups. Another thing you can do with assists is call assist + mighty strike L, the mighty strike L will cross under them.
Thor’s options on block arent easy but they are good, it just relies on you reacting quick enough in the right way. If you’re not push blocked you’re best option is a tick throw, you have to be careful not to mess up the timing but if you do it too early then remember you have the option to burn a meter for mighty punish. If pushblocked you can use mighty smash H, it actually has a lot of advantage on block but it usually goes over them and whiffs because thor jumps too far, which is why it can be used when push blocked. With an assist you can just do cr.LM or LH > call assist > mighty smash H or L, if you’re not push blocked it becomes a mix up since mighty smash H jumps over them and crosses up with assist and L stays on the same side. If you’re push blocked mighty smash H gets you back in like i said earlier.
In combination with a lockdown assist (cold star, black hole, etc) you put the incoming character in a 50/50 mighty hurricane setup. Once the character lands he will either stay in the ground or jump, so thor can predict and M.Hurricane H 'd in 1 frame, or M.Hurricane L’d at a safer distance in 5 frames.
TK mighty hurricane / normal jump mighty hurricane. I call It as a 50/50 because Thor will grab the character the moment he/she jumps if you predict it. Not that safe against characters with dive kicks though.
The fully charged Mighty Strike M on incoming characters, when timed right, will go above the incoming character and causes the opponent to crouch block. The falling air j.L is what people don’t expect and the lockdown assist, if used, is what keep the opponent in one place in case of being push blocked.
Here are the times i play in this tourney, this was hazbat season 1.5, I did the best I’ve ever done in a marvel tourney, I got 8th place: 3:40, 43:00, 2:54:20
good play but why are you using DoD for strange’s assist? its not very good especially if you dont have a teleport character, BoB is a much better assist for your team imo and i feel like you werent abusing frank’s assist enough.
I was trying to rely on DoD to track the opponent to keep them locked down, but I haven’t used the team sense then, I now use thor/frank/modok (which i use psyonic blaster which is defiantly better than DoD, its not that I didn’t like BoB, I just prefered DoD)
In these TACs, are all the mighty strikes fully charged? for the life of me, I cannot get the light air mighty strike to hit after the initial charged M mighty strike. any pointers? character specific?
Local tournament I was in last Friday. I did alright. Don’t know where I placed, but it was fun. Only go one match recorded at 2:10:03, but the whole thing’s worth watching.
Sounds like you need some gimmicks, when use M mighty strike delay it just a bit so so you can de on top of your opponent that way you can still be in range to drop on them with j.L or go for air m. M Strike to mix it up also call an assist when doing it try to time it so that the in coming opponent lands on the assists atk if he push block only the assist will be affected not you. mix it up with air L M strike, how this works is when the opponent is about to come in jump up back and dash up back call your assist( Arthur daggers) just before you do L M.strike so they can land on it then drop on them with j.L, they block it continue attacking end your attack string with H M smash then after the second hit when you land catch the with Mighty Punish, this catches PPL like 90% of the time this will make opponents scared to block you. If you have Thor on second and put mighty smash for his assist use your cross over counter
You have to learn how to be mobile with Thor with hes Tri-Dash and Mighty Strike to rush down (Your Thor looked way too stiff but hey thats how it starts out) , even though it doesnt look like it M Strike is really safe. Check out NeoArtisan youtube channel for a great Thor guide on resets, mobility and mixups.
Players to watch are RoyalFlush who has a youtube channel and is on WNF and Offcast streams on twitch tv and JPN player called ABEGEN IMO is by far the best Thor out there watch his videos
Here are some examples of gimmicks for Thor. This video uses a lot of meter for mixups pay attention primarily to how he xfactors out of mighty spark while the opponent is still in block stun dash up and catch him with mighty punish which in x factor does crazy damage. Also take note of how he uses modoks beam assist with the mighty smash to cover distance and catch the opponent with a mighty hurricane or mighty punish. These the most practical in the video.

In this video is a great Thor player ABEGEN Tron/Thor/S.Hulk vs DEArag who is also good i think its his training partner. Watch this to get a good idea on his mobility and how to get in. played right Thor doesn’t look slow at all. This one is funny to watch.

In this video skip to 10:10 watch how Abegen lands the m. M. Strike on incoming characters. You can learn a lot of strategies with Thor in this video, resets, mobility, mix ups, if you have time watch it till the end.Its a really good match.
I’d like to get some feedback on my matches. Today was our first ever casuals in my hometown (normally i have to drive 45 minutes). I run Thor 2nd, but he got a lot of play time
my matches are around 2:14:00
All those super jump :l: 's were supposed to be mighty hurricanes. i have to work on that.
Just got back from Battle at the Capitol. That tournament was so intense! I didn’t do particularly well in singles, but on day 2 they held a super hype 3v3 team tournament. I teamed up with Jewpac (who was on day 2 of learning thor) and Hi I’m Nastyy. We ended up taking 2nd place in the team tournament
my first match is at 2:01:00 but literally all of my team’s matches were streamed, so I’m all over this video. Fought Mine for the first time (out of 3 overall i think) at 2:55:00
Some of the opponents that we played include Mine, Quest, and XSK Samurai.
