Meh, I liked it. I liked the dialogue, the action was decent, and it was a really interesting take on Peter’s story. I think what I liked most about it was just seeing how inevitable villains and side characters were fleshed out.
I also liked the little stuff, like when he met Nova.
Carnage had multi-level appeal…
The obvious one - he looked cool as fuck. Dat symbiote swag is on 10…
The second aspect - he was truly ‘evil/bad’. There’s no ‘real’ reason. there is no dastardly plot. He fucks shit up because he can. There is no moral compass like Venom. He’s a true polar opposite to Spiderman, something Venom was supposed to be originally, but failed at overtime due to fan popularity driving him into the dark hero territory. As I see it…
I didnt have much problem with Carnage per se; the editors and Michilenie should have perhaps killed off Venom or exiled him if they wanted him to be at the forefront.
IMO Having both of them diluted Venoms appeal and forced him into the Lethal vigilante role which seemed forced.
That said, Spider-man needed a true , “serial killer/anarchist” type of villain and Bagley did a great job on the symbiote design.
I would like to know specifically why some of you have extreme distaste for Ultimate Parker and Miles, because I’m willing to bet most of the people who have a problem with their characters and claim they aren’t “true” Spider-Men, don’t actually know what Parker was all about.
As someone with NO vested interest in Spiderman sorry he’s always bored me - no shots though, it’s just me - I frankly could careless ‘what a particular character was about’ - it came down whether or not the end product was good. I could careless who plays Batman and if he kills/doesn’t kill - so long as its an enjoyable read. tThe only thing synonomous with Batman to ‘me’ is ‘dark’. The same thing with Spiderman - he’s a strong hero who at times looks overmatched (by comparison to other heroes/villains), and throws out random quips. His role “to me” is comedic sidekick strong enough to be the hero. The other stuff can kick rocks.
Anybody who rides for 616 Peter Parker is obviously blind to how silly Parker is… Dude is a smart dumb nigga who always creates his own problems.
Doc Ock said it perfectly in Spider-Man 2, “Brilliant, but lazy.” That is Peter Parker in a nutshell. Tony Stark and Otto were both shocked to learn just how intelligent he is, and then disappointed to see that he never did anything with said intelligence beyond designing his web-shooters and spider-tracers.
Parker hasn’t accomplished shit since that damn spider bit him outside of putting away a few crooks and marrying way out of his league, and the moron still found a way to fuck THAT up. He always makes asinine decisions because of his silly self-loathing guilt… Ben Reilly*(the realest Spider-Man)* was disgusted when he found out about the deal Peter made with Venom to stay out his way instead of putting him away like a good hero should have.
I love Spider-Man–he’s probably my favorite super hero, but I can’t deny just how much of a self-absorbed jerk ass Peter Parker became over the last thirty years… Teenage Peter would probably hang himself on his own webline if he could see what he was going to become.
Peter Parker isn’t really much different than some bright people of today. People having great intellect and finding a way to not make use of it or screw it up is almost the norm. So if anything PP is more human than your average superhero.
That being said I think 616 Spidey is a GOAT superhero and will always have more fans than Black Panther. BP a poor mans Batman but he will fade out of existence in the next ten years.
Unfortunately, a lot of what Po said is true. Parker is my favorite Spider-Man, but he made some pretty damn stupid decisions. But I have already covered (in the lounge, mostly) in extensive detail why exactly Parker is such a great Spider-Man, and why those mistakes he’s made will always be within the paradigm of his character.
However this only confuses me more when people hate on Morales and Ultimate, because both of them were better decision makers in general, I feel. Their actions as a whole made more sense, even for being how young they were.
Peter choosing to basically let the only remaining piece of his family die, would have been a more out of character decision than if he would have kept his relationship with MJ. Despite how much reason his choice may lack, the Parker everyone knows will always look out for his Aunt over any living person on the planet. People often underestimate the importance he places on her, yet ironically this is something that’s consistent in pretty much every iteration of him.
The crazy part about that whole Aunt May/Devil deal was that in a previous Spiderman book that was like a prelude to One More Day, his Aunt May told him that she wanted to die and it wasn’t his fault.
whats crazy is the fact…this was all an excuse to break up peter and mj. because joe q doesnt like divorces cause it ruined his childhood…so he just pushed that idea on us.
Not to mention he tried to go with that stupid “Oh, Spidey works better when he’s single” bullcrap that has never flown much. And the worst part? Almost immediately after, Carlie Cooper shows up…fuck life.
