In your guys’ experience, what are some of the most dangerous matchups for Phoenix? Obviously she has the tools and damage to handle anyone really, but some characters are still a threat when disrespected. A good example would be someone like Akuma due to his beam super.
What are some of the others that have consistently given you guys problems?
So I want to put together a Phoenix team for two reasons - the first is that her normal forms seems ridiculously fun to play and it’s always nice to have a PHX team because at the very least you can have first hand knowledge of the ins and outs.
I’m thinking of running her second so that I can get the 5 bars and still have the anchor assist so that I can maximize the time she’s not in DP mode.
On point I want to use Chris since he builds a lot of meter, has a ton of tools, and can chip like crazy. I’m looking at it from the stand point of someone who can stay away from danger, build meter and wittle down the opponent all at the same time. He also has 1.1 million health on top of that.
I know Chris benefits from a beam assist, so either Doom or Ironman could run anchor and still help PHX as well. Rather not use Taskmaster because I don’t think his arrow are on screen long enough for Chris to throw an H grenade on block-confirm.
Just wanted to throw this out there, maybe get some feedback or at least some conversation going. Anyone else use Chris on a PHX team?
I always have trouble with magneto level 3. I sometimes tag her in early at 4.6 bars because even getting hit a combo will finish her 5th bar before she dies, but a level 3 can insta-kill her and she won’t transform since the hit that gives the 5th bar kills her. Mags can also instakill Dark Phoenix as soon as she transforms, or DHC from someone else into it, and not even a teleport behind or block will save her. I also have trouble with Doom putting rays off at every angle not letting me move around, and Dormammu flame balls.
I’m running Wolverine/Sentinel/Phoenix, and wolvy with sentinel assist is such a good builder I sometimes use a hyper to finish someone off. Phoenix shot also safely turns Wolverine’s air throw into a combo. I’m thinking about trying Wolverine/Phoenix/Sentinel though, letting Phoenix play like a normal character with sent assist no matter how many bars she has when wolvy dies. Then I’d always have either lvl 3 x-factor dark phoenix or sentinel.
Hmm, I’ve been trying to put together a Phoenix team, but being pretty new to marvel, so I’m having some trouble designing my team setup:
At first I was thinking of settling on Trish/Amaterasu/Phoenix, which is pretty strong and can built meter well. After reading up some, I’m now also looking at either Trish/Wesker/Phoenix or Wesker/Doom/Phoenix, both of which have a good starting duo to play battery and even win without Phoenix. Anyone have insight to offer on these three teams, which do you think is strongest, and do they have any glaring weaknesses?
If anyone wants to offer other suggestions, in addition to the members in those teams, I’ve also been interested in playing: Hsien-Ko, Morrigan, Felicia, Storm and maybe Chun-Li, but I feel none of those work very well in a Phoenix team, or there are more powerful character choices that can be taken.
looks like my phoenix team that ive been running since launch is looking to be the most successful team, tokido just won ceo with it. hmmm… glad to see my team getting some notice!
normally I don’t toy around with phx but I decided to get something in the works.
right now I’m messing around with wolvie/sent/phx. Wolvie doesn’t really need meter to get things going, as of Sent. Both dmg very high and build incredible meter off beam chips, dive kicks, and mixups. I like phx teams that can cause high dmg and build meter, but at the same time having the option to use the meter and possibly rebuilding it to 5. Doom variations work with this team also, plasma beam assist not only helps wolvie get in but can be combo’d off of.
Edit - LOL didn’t see the tokido match he used that team? Looks like my building knowledge is in the right direction
Doom isn’t a problem. You can camp him out. If he has 3 meters, stay away from him and out zone him. You can punish everything Dorm does with a teleport.
The only problem is Akuma. That guy beats Phoenix straight up
Tatsu blows through everything. It goes through both her traps and TK shots. If Phoenix is sitting up in the air throwing homing shots, Akuma can just jump up to her doing an upwards Tatsu and blow straight through her shots, getting a free combo. If you make a bad teleport Tatsu will catch her while shes recovering from the teleport. And yes, even Dark Phoenix’s traps and TK shots lose to Akuma Tatsu. You certainly probably don’t wanna use Phoenix flame to beat his Tatsu unless you’re DP because thats just a waste of meter
So since Tatsu beats everything, all you have to do is stay away from him right? Nope. If you do anything front of him from full screen, he can instantly punish her with his beam super. Laying traps, thrownig shots, pressing buttons for no reason. Beam supers will ALWAYS punish her. Even Dark Phoenix XF LVL 3 gets punished every time by doing anything from full screen with beam supers
So lets summarize up by this point against Akuma:
-You can’t lay traps if he has any meter.
-You can’t throw TK shots
-Teleporting is extremely risky.
So you caught him doing something dumb and you wanna punish with Phoenix flame? Well first off, if he’s doing beam super you HAVE TO be extremely close to him otherwise Phoenix flame will outright lose to beam super if you’re too far(like midscreen). If he is extremely close to you and wanna just chip him out and pressure him with anything, also a bad idea because his Shoryuken Super will go straight through everything you do(including Phoenix Flame).
So at this point, Akuma forces Phoenix to play extremely defensive. Normally Dark Phoenix is extremely offensive. She doesn’t do too well when you’re just trying to block and play defense. On top of that you can’t even set up traps or throw fireballs at him so you’re forced to play extremely carefully, jumping slowly and try to catch him with a mixup or something.
Also DO NOT COME IN vs Akuma if he has 3 bars as DP. He is one of the few characters in the game that can chip her out before she even touches the ground and has time to activate Xfactor. He can air beam super, land, beam super then beam super again. Dead Dark Phoenix. He can also kill her and catch her with his level 3 as shes transforming for an instant kill.
So yea. Akuma legitimately counters Phoenix. Everything she does he has a clear and sound answer for.
On the bright side though the Phoenix-Wolverine matchup is like 9-1 in my opinion If you play it smart and avoid getting air grabbed all you have to do is TK shot and Wolverine can’t do anything but take damage all day.
After watching EVO I’ve decided to keep the team I’ve had since the 2nd week after the game’s launch. Wesker (Sams Edge), Haggar (D. Lariat), and Phoenix (Overdrive instead of shot though). Thanks Viscant for being a better player than me and showing truly how good this team is. I’m going to learn Chris and Doom though for Phoenix since those two look fun and are looking good. Chris and Haggar look like they would benefit from one another too.
Overall, I do. Jay switched up against various teams. But the main characters than can get around Haggar assist (Ammy, Zero, Magneto, Wesker) didn’t really show up much in Jay’s path.
Notice how he switched to his usual Wesk/IM/Phoenix against Clockwork?
Against Wolverine teams and teams that run Tron assist themselves, Haggar is heaps better. Jay even says that PR rog was being pretty dumb in attacking with wolverine via Fierce and Beserker Slashes while Haggar was a threat. If he had gone to low shorts, he could have stayed much safer and got a few Happy birthdays.
I think Tron is much more capable on point as well, as the finals proved. Any stray hit can be converted very well into death combo.
Also, Haggar’s health drain is real enough that you can’t just insert him into block strings like Tron, not to mention she recovers much quicker.
how do you guys fight sentinel with DP? i’m getting blown up by hard drive…it goes through everything =/ i was fighting this guy who anchored sent and saved his meter and xfactor for the DP fight.
i’ve tried fighting him from the ground but he has tiger knee hard drive…
also, does fierce teleport put phoenix safely above HSF? or does she still get clipped?
Phoenix will still get clipped by Hyper Sentinel Force if you use Teleport H. Your best option is to jump, airdash up, then use flight to stay above it, or just super-jump to flight. Sentinel will mostly rely on his short-range attacks to get through Phoenix’s offense. Your best option is to stay evasive and use traps to throw him off. Preferably L and H, though M will sometimes work if you can back up a bit.
DO NOT TRY TO COUNTER HARD DRIVE. It is completely invincible and will burn right through Phoenix Rage. Use Teleport L or M to escape its path.
Sentinel is actually a very good choice if you throw him on a Phoenix team. My current set-up is Phoenix (α), Jill (γ), and Sentinel (β), though it works best if you run Jill on point and Phoenix second.
Comes to roughly 540,000 and should build one or two meters. The key is using the Feral Stance cancel ( :d::d::s:) while mid-flight with Arrow Kick ( :qcf::h:) to get a leg up on your opponent and dash behind them before they know what’s happening. Then unload with the combo. Alternatively, it can be started with :u::h:.
