The allies and enemies of the Phoenix Force- Phoenix Team Building and Matchup thread(UPDATE!)

Phoenix, Nova, and X-23 are an absolutely perfect trio. My god.

Phoenix (α - TK Shot)
Nova (****β ****- Centurion Rush)
X-23 (****β ****- Ankle Slice)

Nova is a fantastic battery with a 650k meterless bread and butter combo. X-23’s Ankle Slice assist allows you to set up easy unblockables with Nova with Centurion Rush M or the Energy Javelin glitch. Even with Phoenix on point, both assists are fantastic for pressure. This is definitely my final team.

I’ve decided to add/see if Nemesis can run with my Phoenix team with Wesker leading off and Jean as the anchor.

He’s got massive HP. Hits like a brickhouse without hypers, and is a fucking reset machine. Only problem so far is which assist to use.

Launcher Slam assist would be PERFECT if it had the super armor it does when Nemesis is on point. As it is it’s a good combo extender for Wesker.
Clothesline Rocket assist covers a good amount of space in front and in the air but the rocket rarely hits afterwards, your combos get all jacked up often, and if the rocket misses (as it often does) or the clothesline doesn’t land then he’s on the screen with that big rocket launcher shot waiting to get hit.
Rocket assist is pretty worthless considering about half of the cast can simply duck under it and it doesn’t track.

This has been THE INVINCIBLE SWORDSMAN saying:

But I need/want a tank in the middle. I still like Thor but if Nemesis is better…

The best team for phoenix is:

NEMESIS -A

MORRIGAN- Y (Dark harmonizer)

PHOENIX-B (TK-OVERDRIVE)

Nemesis is the new sentinel (huge stamina ,very huge damage, tricky ,good range in atk) NICE M-BUILDER!!!

morrigan is versatil! and dark harmonizer is soo PERFECT for phoenix!!! she is good in combos and spam.

phoenix is phoenix is a good character but the small life is a huge problem!!! but i im a great phoenix player

mmmmmm…VERGIL …MORRIGAN…PHOENIX…MMMMM i need try this team in a future…

Still rocking team Tokido. ( Wolverine, Sentinel, and Phoenix)
Just wondering for the people out there who play this team what combos do you use for the air tag into Sent since they took out the rocket punch loop in the corner that built you 3 bars. Also what combos do you do with Sentinel that builds you good meter, I’ve been doing fly and unfly combos with him to try to build max meter. Was just curious on everyone’s thoughts. Thanks

Tokido actually changed up his team, he’s been running Mags/Doom/Phoenix from what I’ve seen. Could be a mistake though. I’ve been running, Haggar/Doom/Phoenix, and haggar builds so much meter and getting a corner reset means free meter and usually a dead character.

With the Wesker team, you could just go with the archetype that is in the first post which is Wesker/Haggar/Phoenix. I still feel it’s effective and the two characters are good battery characters. As for the all female team, Chun Li/Morrigan/Phoenix. As for assists, Morrigan would probably be Dark Harmonizer, Phoenix would be probably be TK Shot or TK Overdrive. Chun Li I got nothing on so you are on your own.

I really want to use _____/Morrigan/Phoenix because those two are my favorite characters and the synergy between them is obvious… but then that leaves the point character without a strong set of assists. Who would work best on point here? (And which assist is best for Phoenix, on this team and in general?)

Thank you!

I can try and take a whack at this. One obvious choice would be Wesker. He is a great battery character that can get in on his own and he has decent combos that may take a little time learning. Haggar is decent also because he is also a good battery character and I haven’t had a problem getting in on people while using him on second. Given I use the Phoenix team archetype (Wesker/Haggar/Phoenix), those are the guys that I have the most knowledge with. Those are the obvious choices though, here are some other choices:

Nemesis–Great Health, good damaging meterless combos that are simple (The bare basic one does 500k roughly).
Ammy–Low Health, good combos that would involve some amount of lab time though may have some problems getting in without an assist.
Doom–Good Health, Combos that would once again involve lab time (Bucktooth,ShadyK, and Clockwork combos. They all have similar moves).
Magneto–Ok health and his Air Dash combo builds some good meter and deals some good damage.

As for the new characters in Ultimate, I don’t have extensive knowledge on them in a Phoenix team, but if I had to guess on them I would go with Ghost Rider and Doctor Strange. As for the Phoenix and Morrigan assists, Dark Harmonizer is amazing and obvious, while Phoenix should use either TK Shot or TK Overdrive. Depending on who you are using and which assist is better for combo extension. TK Shot is good while TK Overdrive does more hits so it hurts the HSD but it goes lower. Hopefully this helps you in your search.

Sorry for the lack of updates, will update thread with Ultimate characters / feedback from this thread after I finish my exams.

hey all, ive been using wolvie/Dorm/Phoenix and I’ve been having great results wolvie is a great battery, although his beserker slash lost its invincibility he is still good. Dorm is just a good character overall. And if they snap in phoenix and kill her you are free to use your meter with either character. Now wesker was a first choice for the team but I liked the way wolvie played so its preference here. The only problems is this how can phoenix deal with strider? level 3 x-factor ouroboros kills her clean. I was wondering if snapping him in early is a smart way to rid this problem?

yeah if you don’t mind spending meter i’d recommend snapping him in or stealing meter if strider is the last character and you still have 2 or more characters left. Also idk how effective this would be but lay a ground trap and super jump on it and if they try to teleport above you i think the trap will hit.

PS for anyone thinking skrull is a bad matchup for phoenix he isn’t. You just need to play a really good ground game and stay grounded what you need to do w/ regular and dark phoenix is to just lay ground traps and start your offensive over them because if he tries to meteor smash than either trap will hit him regular phoenix or dark phoenix. U just need to watch out for a command grab when laying traps. And this tactic definetly becomes more difficult if skrull has assists backing him up or he got phoenix in a snapback combo. However if it’s just one one one its like a 6-3 matchup in phoenix’s favor in my opinion.

I’ve been running Team Tokido (Mags/Doom/Phoenix) and I think this is the team I’ll settle with for now as a main team in Ultimate. Mags and Doom both build ridiculous meter by themselves and a full Mags blast loop combo TAC into Doom’s M&M fly loop will net 3-4 bars in one go. Phoenix can also make great use of Disruptor assist for teleport mixups and Hidden Missiles for general cockblockage.

I was also wondering what’s the accepted BnB for normal Phoenix. The one I’m using right now is

c.LMHS sjxx jMMH forward jH, down jH Phoenix Trap L, forward st.H, Phoenix Trap L st.HS MMHS Tiger Knee TK Shot L

I’m sure there’s a more optimal combo but I can’t seem to find any Phoenix vids on youtube.

Treat Strider in the same way you treat Phenoix, either snap him in or do side exchanges to deprive him of meter for Ouroboros. As anchor with meter he is like a poor man’s Pheonix.

my current phoenix team is Zero/Dante/Phoenix. Zero’s combos are long and they build so much meter. Jam session is a great lock down assist and it also helps Zero extend his combos. When I get hit, my opponent has to think long and hard about whether to snap in Phoenix or kill Zero

Eh

Virgil/ Iron Man /Phoenix

or more control based version

Virgirl/ Spiderman / Phoenix

if you want to use morrigan with phoenix, youre either going to have phoenix double as assist/anchor + morrigan as your battery, or have phoenix double as point/anchor + morrigan battery + assist.

having phoenix play on point or to call her as an assist comes with obvious risks but that is the idea of the character. if you use morrigans dark harmonizer, make full use of its potential and dedicate some of your meter to damage your opponent.

my best team is phoenix.a/sentinel.a/magneto.a

i feel its best to have phoenix play point. it is the highest risk/highest reward approach to using a pure glass cannon. both sentinel and magnetos assists allow phoenix to get in quickly and get some hard damage in while building meter. magneto and sentinel can still put up a strong fight if she dies early. magneto can make great use of any meter left behind by phoenix. if i go for dark phoenix and switch her out, sentinel and magneto both make good use of phoenixs tk shot assist. all three have great mobility. all three are monstrosities in x-factor 3.

this also caught my attention. if you yourself are a competent player, using phoenix first is a very viable approach. she is a glass cannon, not a hard anchor. in fact, because she has so little health, she needs an offensive assist to make the most of her game, (“against competent players.”). another thing id like to point out is that phoenix is nowhere near as vulnerable as she seems if you use meter. as team point, it is not so dangerous to do this. not at all. phoenix can burn right through one (or more, with luck) of your opponents characters on an even matchup. once thats done, why do you even need dark phoenix? using phoenix first leaves you with more options. if she survives, (which really, really isnt at all such a rare occurence) you can always tag her out - and just because you used meter (*if *you did) doesnt mean dark phoenix will not come out.

the reason many people believe she can never be played effectively on point is because people seem to think “dark phoenix = viable phoenix” and “regular phoenix = trash”. this is far from the truth…

Trish/Amaterasu/Phoenix
alt.
Frank/Nemesis/Phoenix

I know putting Frank on a team with Phoenix is not good because he needs to shine to be good, but he builds meter quickly even at lower lvls. Also Nemesis has good synergy with both Phoenix and Frank when using his assist B

Wesker(Samerai edge) Dr. Doom (Plasma) and Phoenix (TK Shot)
I don’t know why I don’t see this team a lot more but I feel that this is phoenix’s best team IMO.
Wesker and Doom have great synergy with all of the beam to gun zoning. No to mention both characters build meter like it’s going outta fashion for phoenix. Plus, if Phoenix does die then you are left with Wesker lv 4 x factor, and Dr. doom x factor

What about a team of Chris (Gunfire)/Morrigan (Dark Harmonizer)/Phoenix (TK Shot)? I’ll always be using Chris, so yeah. But also he’s got one of the highest healths in the game and can withstand more punishment, hence build more meter. Morrigan is obvious, but I have hear lately that she somehow is good now (I still haven’t tried her UMvC3 incarnation).

Hey guys, i’ve came with an ideia which is crazy, but i’ve seen that some1 also had it :stuck_out_tongue:

If i play Phoenix on point, i drooool on normal Jean, so, what would be the best combination of assists to back her up? I mean to treat her like a “normal” point char, spending meter, TAC’s and DHC’s…

I know its a bit crazy but i think its preety doable ^^

Thanks for every1s time
