word. losing a dollar on .25 play is a lot less noticeable than losing a dollar .50 play. currently, i go to scandia probably less than once a week, and usually only if i know other people are going… if games were 1 token, i’d probably be going there several times a week right after work. if i spent more money there, i wouldn’t feel as bad about it. but right now… 2 token play doesn’t mean they’re making more money off of our usual time spent gaming. it means that they’ve given us more incentive to play console for free.
With all of our concerns about Scandia, would everyone be more inclined to have in-house console gatherings?
just a reminder:
Tourney tomorrow, the 9th
games: Mvc2, street fighter 3 third strike, guilty gear slash
$3 per game, payout = 70/20/10
signups start @ 4pm
Cvs2 is still at scandia, it is in the guilty gear showcase at the moment, however tomorrow around 2pm the tech said that he will switch out the games and put guilty gear back in the big cab. cvs2 will not be played this tourney.
I talked to makoto joe, he will not be making this tourney, hes in oregon for the next couple weeks. So now marvel is open wen, jheremy, alex??? OMega Tony???
Well, yes. I’d be inclined to make a habit of in-house gatherings. I started to arrange one thursday until a few things came up. That’s what really got me thinking about Scandia. They have the games. They have the set up. Why was I preferring to play at my house? Ah yes… Too expensive. Not worth the atmosphere or travel to go pay more money at a place that has less competition than others but is more expensive.
And when we do decide to gather up and go somewhere, we usually end up going somewhere further with more to offer. I’d hate to leave Scandia hanging but I will if they are going to put the responsibility of creating a place worth patronizing on me. Businesses should be attractive to engage without customers needing to pay them to make it so. I guarantee they wouldn’t open a miniature golf site with one hole only at $45 and put a sign out saying “it will get better after you customers sink in more money.”
I want to try to at least raise my concerns there because i’d prefer if Scandia were worthwhile and you could go there for a few matches here and there a few times a week. Plus, random people who have passive interests that could potentially become more serious when they see people playing consistently can’t be pulled in with a bunch of people playing at someone’s house because there’s no general public access.
But until then, I wouldn’t mind playing host to a couple of meetings. I’ve got two decent sized but old@$$ TV’s right next to each other and nearly every FG you can name in some form from Third Strike to Alpha anthology to XI to NGBC to Tekken DR to VF5 to DOA4 (I have to find that) to Marvel to whateverthehex.
Welcome to Nick’s world everyone. We all see Scandia’s problems, but there’s nothing we’ve done about it. Then again, from that perspective, besides paying a bunch of money, what CAN we do?
We could
- Stop going.
Pros: We don’t drop .50 on games that a majority of us have at home.
We get our friday nights back.
Cons: Competition isn’t AS accessible. Nick, I know that you, Shake, and Rival all game together fairly often, but outside of that core group, the exclusivity keeps the rest of us from participating. I see it when you play at Scandia, you’re either ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED with the low quality cabinets and leaving with the quickness to go play where everything works; or you’re bored because you rack up wins in 3S and want a real challenge. There’s nothing to keep you there. Understandably, you could go as often as you do, and still hate it because you aren’t getting enough bang for your buck.
-
At home fight nights.
Pros: Cheap, almost free, open late, entertainment.
Cons: Who are you people? I play with you fairly often, but beyond that, I don’t know who you are, where you live, how many felonies you’ve committed, or which states you’re wanted in. I’m only 18 and therefore still live with my mom. Her word is gold, and I’m 99.9% positive that she wouldn’t want strangers coming over to her home on a friday/saturday night to play video games. This is different for some of you because you possess your own shelter, so you set your own rules. Even then, you don’t know the scandia crew well enough to have them over. -
Keep going to scandia.
Pros: Comfort of the familiar, Fighting games, Otaku DDR nerds.
Cons: 50 cent games. OLD Fighting games in poor condition, SWEATY Otaku DDR nerds.
This is where we are at right now. I don’t like it, but i can deal with it.
Anyone else have an option that I missed?
You totally look older. Anyway, I think we have a good discussion going. Scandia is far from perfect, but I think we’ll eventually come up with a solution. Maybe we can send the tech a group e-mail or something. Maybe we can have someone nice enough to host evening get together?
joe (spanky) made some good points. i think the arcade feel though is what keeps us coming back. I mean, when jamal just randomly showed up that first night, and people were like WTF! or when you get the random, cross-handed, top tier mexicans playing. But yeah, more input from everyone would be awesome, lets keep this going.
More then likely not going to make the tourney tomorrow, i’ve been sick for the past 3 days but we’ll see.
My group of four will be coming, hopefully CvS2 will be playable at the tournament, none of us really play GG guess that is why we’d rather have that.
Anyways, is the tournament still on? If so when are signups?
tournament is still on signups start at 4pm.
Cvs2 will be playable 2 hours prior to the tourney, then the tech will switch it out and put guilty gear back in.
right now all machines are at 1 token, and i believe they are all on tourney mode. will be 1 token till tuesday
I’ll be there for some intense Guilty Gear action. No Homo.
If I’m feeling good, 3S will be in order too.
awwwww no cvs2 for the tournament?
That always makes me laugh for some reason. I know you, Kris and I have talked many times about the cross-handed mayhem. Welcome to backwards town.
The whole Scandia/In-House debate can go on forever. Spanky did mention a lot of good points and most of them I agree with. I love playing fighters with my own equipment and not having to worry if a random Jab is going to come out or if I will be able to D/B block. What I do like about driving up to Scandia is hanging out with all you Sonoma Fighting Guys (no homo). Since most of my Marin friends have dropped off the face of the planet or maybe don’t play as much now, I find myself spending more time in Sonoma.
The problem with completely abandoning Scandia and doing in-house is that once you start it it BETTER keep going. You can have both, but you’d have to constantly be at both. See if we start doing mostly in-house, all of us will be spending little to no time at Scandia. Who knows, maybe management might then pull some of the games that people outside our groups might not play (in terms of fighters). Let’s say that happens and maybe people don’t feel like throwing in-houses (for various reasons), then essentially we lose our only local arcade worth a shit in all of Sonoma and Marin County.
I hate the random nature of the Scandia sticks as well, but we all definitely have to think how we can balance the two. Definitely help to keep Scandia around to cater to our favorite fighters (hopefully get them working better) or completely turn around and do in-house gatherings as often (or more) than we all go to Scandia.
Basically the point of the entire ramble, I don’t want to put all my eggs in one basket with either Scandia or the in-house. If that does happen we might run the risk of losing one completely. Having options is always good.
Good luck to everyone entering the tournament today. Wish I could be there to watch it all go down. Sucks that CVS2 won’t be run, since it was the only game I wanted to enter.
Thanks again Dan for throwing this tourney on the weekend of my girlfriend’s birthday
where do you guys play? i play in fairfield (live in vallejo) but always open to more comp
We play at the Scandia in Rohnert Park. It’s on Redwood Drive, next to the Inn N Out burger. It’s visible from Highway 101.
We’ve got all of the main fighters. (More than Tilt, I believe. Just, No SC3 or KOFXI.)
That Includes 3S, MvC2, CvS2, GGXX: Slash, Garou, Puzzle Fighter, T5 (not DR though.) If you feel like it, come check us out. Tournament is TODAY!!! Signups start at 4 p.m.
Judging by your name and Avatar, you’re a 3S and GGXX player. If I recall correctly, Tilt is mainly CvS2 and MvC2. We on the other hand, focus on 3S. Plus, I play GGXX and always encourage good players to come out.
haha nah. i used to play #reload when it first came out. and i used to play 3s (even my name on pokerstars used to be Makoto SAII) but now i’m mainly marvel. maybe i’ll go out there for some 3s though. i play garou as well
its going down right now!!! cvs2 just finished. i dont know if 3s is going to be run, big scare with the machine…
sorry for cutting out early everyone, but i had some relationship issues i had to tend too, my gf was none too happy. oh well, good games to all i played tonight: sam, lui$G, rival. THANK YOU TAM, for the assist in cvs2. whaaaaaaaaats good! lets do it bigger next time
I just spent the evening hanging out with some people here in GA. Apparently my Urien is better than my Ryu, despite the fact that I don’t really use Urien that much. ?_? Makes me sad. All the time I spent on Ryu.
Good games to everyone.
Rival won 3S. (Go figure.)
Nick Won GGXX (Good games Nick, I want a rematch.)
Anthony won CvS2 (He isn’t a regular, so I don’t know too much about him.)
and someone else won MvC2 (I didn’t know his name.)
Kris has the brackets now, he’ll do what he wants with them.
Good job everyone.

What happened to Slam Dance?
