First Def Jam Vendetta was the shit.
I still want to know how the VS in chronicles was different than the previous version. I’m not trying to call people out, I really want to know (I like knowing these things)
Holy shit I forgot Def Jam probably a good thing cause of the later games.
If we’re talking about players, I’m just going to say that Australia was definitely going through a drought as well as the USA. As somebody who was trying to get into the Melbourne FGC around early 2008, the difference between that and now, and more viscerally, the difference between that and mid 2009 was absurd.
Now a lot of this is because of local factors, for example, the traditional Australian KoF scene has shown, and continues to show no interest in tournaments or console meetups for reasons that haven’t been explained to me, the Melbourne Tekken scene has a lot of infighting preventing it from going anywhere, and the other popular non-CAPCOM games had their own issues (except Smash, Smash was going strong), meaning it was just 3s and Guilty Gear that were played with any real seriousness. Yes they had meetups, yes they had scenes, but on top of the significantly lower the numbers the whole “there’s no new players so if a new player does get interested there’s nobody their level to play so they don’t come again so there’s no new players” thing was very much an issue.
I never really noticed a drought until after 2009 when it became suddenly difficult to find good new games worth playing and people who are willing to play something outside of the two or three most popular games of the day.
Well seriously, maybe the comp you had before weren’t playing the games because they thought they were so great, but because they had no real options. That’d fit your scenario too.
it usually that some people preffer to play a game that they dont like but has competition than the game they like alone
What he’s saying though is that it “suddenly” became difficult to get people to play the games he liked. You’d think he already would have contacts from before the sudden difficulty and they’d jump at the chance to play an actually good game
do also anime fighting games count like the ones from Bleach, Naruto and One Piece?
even outside Japan there seems to be a big fanbase in the fg genre
there have been a lot of installments in portables and desktop consoles.
since you mentioned dragon ball, hokuto, jojo and gundam, you might add these as well. there have been a lot from 1999 to 2008. they were popular, with Naruto and Bleach reaching their peak during that era but now both receded, while One Piece became #1 in popularity
wow def jam was the shit…i played the fuck outta fight for new york…
and why do you think that they are now playing “good” games now?
imo he is refering that now there are barely tournaments for other games besides the new ones
plus (considering the site where we are) usually people play the game that have a more active scene, sadly even if they dont like it
many “pro” players have stated that its one of the reasons why they play some of the new games despite not being of their entire liking

That has been on the list for awhile.
i dunno if someone hasn’t mentioned these before but,
power instinct matrimelee , 120% asuka, and advanced variable geo 1 & 2
matrimelee is on the list already, Asuka games are older, (Just checked, 1994-1999)
What about Fatal Fury Wild Ambition? i don’t remember the date (i think is 00’? correct me please) : /
Crap Fighting games count? like Kakuto Chojin (xbox)?
The KOF games in the GBA? The King of Fighters EX 2 Howling Blood comes into my mind.
Also I think Bushido Blade had a re-release like 6 years ago.
I don’t think pure rereleases have been counting, you’d have to ask jed.
All the FF’s were before 2000 tho’ (goes and checks) Wild ambition was Jan '99.
And seriously, if Eternal Fighter and the Touhou one count, presumably everything goes :p The only rule seems to be 'games released new between 2000 and the release of SF4*'
*insert standard objection that 2000 is the wrong starting date here

You forgot this
It is completely insane to include Power Stone 2 and not Smash Bros Melee. Heck, even Brawl deserves to be on there if Power Stone 2 is on the list. I would argue the Smash Bros series had more in common with traditional fighters in terms of gameplay mechanics and execution than power stone 2 did.
One piece grand battle rush deserves to be on the list if power stone 2 does.
Big Bang Beat…
