Ten Years Gone? (List of games when Street Fighter was absent)

You hear about this period in gaming there was no fighters being made. It is often done by new members of the FGC. I’m here to disprove of that. I see it more and often and it is getting quite annoying. So here is a list of fighters that were made and released. It is a 8 year period were there was no Street Fighter. Arcade Third Strike(1999) to Arcade Street Fighter 4(2008). But, I’m going to make it a little harder on myself and not include those 2 release years.

Thank you. As primarily a GG fan I never understood this drought everyone was talking about ( unless the drought was specifically Street Fighter).

Cause street fighter is the only relevant fighter in SRK

also OP forgot Capcom Fighting Jam :stuck_out_tongue:

SSBM - Nov 21, 2001 JP/Dec 3, 2001 US

durr hurr smash

i wish i knew about melty blood when i was younger…i played that shit bout 3 months ago and i enjoyed the shit outta it…too bad they don’t make anymore for console :frowning:

Battle Fantasia from ASW 2007
The Rumble Fish 1 & 2 from Dimps 2004 & 2005 (not sure about the years)

a lot of that list dissapears (especially for capcom) if you move the start date just a little bit, though… especially for Capcom if you leave off the ‘Hyper’ versions which you arguably should.

You forgot DoA 3 and 4 though :stuck_out_tongue:

More to the point, compared to the utterly insane number of fighting games to come out in the nineties, its still a massive drop off… especially if you go say 2003 > 2009… and doubly if you count arcades dying.

Framing is a funny thing.

Thanks added

Smash isn’t being added due to too much controversy around it.

all i see is guilty gear and a whole lotta sadness.

not putting down any games, but cmon, you can’t say with a straight face that bloody roar 4 is a substitute for a street fighter 4 or KoF 13.

when people talk about a famine, or ten years gone. they mean ten years without any big huge games. i like guilty gear, but when that’s your biggest fry, its just not much to eat.

i forgot Chaos Breaker (Dark Awake) 2004

i take GG over SF any day, that its for sure

Street Fighter is the only REAL fighting game. If it doesn’t have Hadoukens, it’s not a real fighting game. If it doesn’t have a SUPER bar, not a real fighting game. If there is any sort of tag mechanic, not a real fighting game. If it’s Smash Bros. it’s not a real fighting game.

I’m being sarcastic, but there are many elitist Street Fighter fanboys who think this way.

also KoF:MI 1 and 2.

This is actually pretty fun trying to figure out games that aren’t on the list yet

This is all just perspective. I doubt your average fighting game player remembers many of the fighting games released in the 90’s that didn’t have Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat in the title. It’s not like Primal Rage ever had a competitive scene (some random 12 man side tournaments ran 10+ years after the games release doesn’t really count).

Hell, a lot of people didn’t even know SF3 existed until SF4 came out.

The timely (as in with recent releases) games with significant playing cultures in that era (in approximate order of community strength):
Tekken
Soulcalibur
DOA
GG (which by the way not sure you should count all those versions :p)

kof2002 is obviously just as big of a deal as kof13, if not bigger(remains to be seen)
The point is that it was only an absence of major SF games. Nothing else.

im so elitist that i don’t think real fighting games HAVE super bars.

give me SF2: CE or give me death. (no joke though, i actually used to feel this way, i’ve since changed my mind somewhat, but i still prefer less “system” in my games)

Kind of an aside, this times a million.

well, there weren’t any fatal fury games in that time period either. I didn’t play KoF so i didn’t realize how big 2002 was for it. Like i said, i wasn’t trying to put down any games in particular, except maybe bloody roar.

edit: and there STILL isn’t a new fatal fury game either, so im doubly annoyed.

lots of new school only know SF and marvel franchise as a base for how fighting games are doing…

even tho its can be a number of games out…the big ones are the one who can control the gamers it brings sadly

The thing is, in a way its reasonable. To quote a friend in the biz:

Almost all the games listed (excepting namco) didn’t have meaningful scenes compared to the legacy games. That’s the drought.
