Just being different doesn’t mean something isn’t Superman/Tekken/whatever.
This whole idea that if a title is different it makes the otherwise unchanged film better doesn’t jive with me. Hollywood Tekken is absolutely Tekken; it uses the series’ characters and general idea (Tekken as a fighting tournament with a hand in politics). How good it is, well, that’s up to the viewer, but even if you hate it, it’s still Tekken.
I brought up Man of Steel because it presented a very different Superman (and Supes origin story) to the comic “norm.” Now personally I thought Man of Steel was hot garbage, not because Superman differed from the comics, but because he acted OOC to the character the movie established on its own. But it’s still Superman even if I think it’s trash.
(And yes, Shyamalan’s Last Airbender is still an Avatar canon, no matter how much I wish otherwise.)
Doesn’t that also apply to Legend of Chun Li, you had Irish M.Bison, something about a cave that purged goodness, M.Bison taking land like Donald Trump in Scotland, Balrog who doesn’t throw punches or wear boxing gloves, Vega who is anything but a handsome narcissistic man, Chun Li who has the ability to change from 100% chinese girl into a mixed race adult, Young Gen, lesbian Chun Li, Charlie who isn’t a soldier, Nash Out.
I think the problem with these films is that the core elements of the franchise are removed or so detached. If you had called Legend of Chun Li something else like The China Town Connection and changed all the names, nobody would have stopped and said, hey wtf, this is Street Fighter!!
The movies have such a generic plot that you could title them anything you wanted.
I understand the reasons behind the whole “If I wanted a plot related to the video game, I’ll just go play the video game!” argument, but the scripts end up being so cheezy, lame, and lowbrow, the kind of stuff you would see on ScyFy. It’s like Hollywood wants to make a hybrid by doing their own gig while throwing in elements from the video games, but the end result is that the movie doesn’t know if it wants to become its’ own movie with some references to the source material or just disregard everything…and still fail to deliver an entertaining product.
The most valid example would be the RE movies… The first one tried to be its’ own thing, but starting from the second one, it just threw in all these characters from the games just for the shits and giggles in a supporting role while not being relatable at all (like the last movie, where Leon is just…there?)
A lot of B-list space operas have synopses that read like a Star Wars film.
A lot of AAA movies have synopses that read like a B-movie’s.
Don’t misunderstand: I’m not defending Legend of Chun Li. Aw hell no. Just that its logline could have produced something amazing. But I’m also of the belief that ANY logline can potentially produce an incredible film.
Movie is shit. Don’t even need to watch it to know that. Some of you f@gs probably gonna write some in depth analysis/synopsis for your shitty site that no one will read just like you probably did for DOA and the legend of shit lee.
I wouldn’t mind…if it were drawn by somebody who does good anatomy instead of the usual super-broad-shouldered scrawny guys with strange lumps and lines all over their body because apparently most jp artists and animators don’t really know what muscle groups look like. The art style and fight scenes for this were basically shit, but I see what they TRIED to do. It would be great if they could get the the group behind the Hokuto No Ken: Rao Gaiden oav series.
