Easiest class to hardest class to play well with:
Medic
Pyro
Soldier
Demo
Engie(the only class I’m kinda iffy where to put)
Heavy
Sniper
Scout
Spy
Reasonings:
Medic - You follow people around and click mouse1. If people are on fire, they should be a priority. If they cry medic and they’re bubble is red, they should also be a priority. You can get pretty good with the Blatsuger or whatever, but healing should be your main purpose, and its very easy to be good at.
Pyro - W + Mouse1. Obviously, theres a bit more to it, like ambushing enemies or utilizing the airblast, but compared to the other classes, (s)he’s just easier to get decent with.
Soldier - The ol’ reliable. Whenever I’m getting my ass kicked or really want to get some frags, I pick the soldier. You got plenty of health, high damage projectiles with good splash that kills most classes in 1-2 hits, and has a cool rocket jump that can give you the edge in battle. Even without the rocket jump, as long as you jump/aim for feet and use your shotty for weaker opponents, you should be fine.
Demo - The middle three is where it gets tricky, because I think they’re pretty interchangable to be honest. The Demo is really a more versatile Soldier. He’s faster, has more ways to attack, and can really rack up kills with his bombs. He’s harder to use than the other ones because he doesn’t have a quick straight forward projectiles that can easily take out rushing pyros/scouts(unless you get a well-aimed pipe bomb), and you have to be more strategic about where you put your stickies since they can just as easily be destroyed/pushed away.
Engie - Again, not sure about his rank, since he’s the only class I can’t stand playing. Like the above poster said, when the other team is really good, your shit might be completely useless. You have to know the best spots to set up shop, constantly be watching over your machines, be on the look-out for spies, etc. Honestly, he can be really easy to play or really difficult, so he’s in the middle.
Heavy - “What? The Heavy shouldn’t be this low!” You have no IDEA how many bad Heavies I have run into. The one’s that constantly run out into the open thinking they’re invincible just to get sniped through the head. The one’s who don’t mind their backsides for protruding knives. The one’s who don’t know when to spin and not to spin your minigun. The one’s who don’t protect their medics because they have a one-track mind. The one’s who don’t know that just because you’re a Heavy doesn’t mean you can use some stealth to surprise the other team. A good Heavy knows all these problems and fixes them accordingly.
Sniper - The Snipers have to be VERY accurate, aware of their surroundings, know when to and not to snipe, the correct sniping areas, and to actually be mobile, not sit there in one place sniping the other sniper from across 2Fort. Yes, you have 80 points from sniping the other sniper. How about getting the Scout that keeps running across the roof and killing you, assclown? Although, I gotta say, the Bow/Shield makes the Sniper a different beast altogether, he might be a bit easier that way…I still think this is a good spot.
Scout - A good Scout is gonna have to use all his speed and agility if he wants to survive. He needs to realize he’s not the guy who’s gonna be on the forefront of battle with the Heavies/Soldiers/Demos/Medics. He’s gotta take out the other scouts, get rid of the medics, get up close and personal with the snipers/demos, and know when to get the fuck out. You have the lowest health in the game; one sticky, one rocket, one charge sniper shot, a bit too close to Pyro/Heavy for 2 seconds: Dead. You have to be able to use all your mobility AND aim accurately AND know when backpedaling with the pistol is a good idea. And don’t even attempt to face down any sentry past level one unless you can nudge out and take it out with a pistol.
Spy - I like how my two favorite classes are the hardest. I probably don’t have to explain this one too much. The Spy is really hit-or-miss, even for the really good ones. You have to know when to disguise, what to disguise as, when to use cloaks(and know the path to get ammo for longer cloak time), when and what to zap/stab, how to escape after a successful/failed attack, etc. And even when you know ALL that, one little spray of fire or an accidental bump into an enemy or just random spychecking can turn your whole plan into a disaster and you will die over and over and over.
