Trying to reinstall HL2 and TF2 now to see if that works.
What exactly is the hang up?
I really don’t know. EVERY time I try to load up TF2, Steam and TF2 freezes. After I get to the second menu screen, those two programs completely freeze up, forcing me to hard reset or, if I’m lucky, force the programs to close with ctrl+alt+del (which takes about 5 minutes just to do because the system is overloaded trying to minimize/override two frozen programs). I can’t even get to the damn menu screen in TF2 before it completely freezes. I really don’t know what’s wrong. HL2 loads fine; I’m actually able to get into the menu screen. I tried starting a new game just to see if it’d load, but it stopped at 75% and Steam and HL2 froze up as well.
Quite frankly I’m baffled by all of this. Either it’s my computer or Steam being the usual trashy, tempermental program that it is. It’s not like computer lacks the hardware to run HL2 and other games, as I was perfectly able to when the game first came out two years ago. I’m really at a loss of words because I have NO IDEA what’s wrong.
I’m reinstalling Steam right now and redownloading/installing HL2 and TF2 in hopes of it fixing a potential problem.
Yeah thats what I was gonna suggest, just reload steam, you probably accidently farked an update or something. It happened to me one time and all I had to do was reinstall steam. Hopefully it fixes it for you.
It’s advertised as a beta. It’s going to have problems for some users/setups. That goes with the territory.
Sorry man, that sucks. Did you get the Steam Client update? They updated it late last night before the beta went live. I would think that it would auto update when you logged on though. Keep us posted, hope to see you online.
I suppose so, but the game is more or less complete… so it’s more like a multiplayer demo than a “beta”.
It’s a beta in the sense that there will still be bugs. Part of being a beta tester–which you are now–is helping to work out the bugs.
For those that are having the problem with the game crashing when you start, do this:
- Right Click on Team Fortress 2
- Select Properties
- Select “Set Launch Options”
- Add the following to the box “-safe -safemode” (Without the quotes.)
The game will start in windowed mode in a small res. From there, go to video options and change it to full screen and whatever res you usually play in. You should be able to play with this work around. I had the crash bug after getting back from class today, but this works for me.

Good shit starcade. Game is very great. More people I know need to play. I already play with a group of friends from arond here, but maybe if enough srk’s get into it we can get like SRK-Blue vs SRK-Red ala Xmen Gold and Xmen blue! dope. HAha. I can’t wait to get homeeeee.
I have to study instead of playing TF2. This makes me cry with sad.

After reinstalling Steam, HL2, TF2, and running TF2 with -safe and -safemode, I got this error:
Engine Error
Direct3D failure. The likely cause is due to application settings requiring too much video memory. Please try rebooting and running the game again with lower quality antialiasing, lower screen resolution and/or lower texture quality settings.
