Taking advantage of training mode

a bit of advice for anyone.

If your developing new strats\combos, YOU SHOULD ALWAYS do it on manual in training mode. The cpu acts much differently when it comes to block stun and ways to actually manipulate the character.

I’ve made up some beastly shit that took days to work out only to find that it doesn’t work against humans.

training mode is good for execution, if you have an imagination and good match experience its useful. but i see what snake is trying and 99% of you are misreading the post when he asks “How do you take advantage of training mode?” without stating the obvious of learning rom or random combos. mixup gave a pretty damn good answer.

exactly, i spend most of my training time learning to tri-jump/unfly better and faster.
I’m just workin on execution and speed, I learn reaction timing and adaptations in actual matches

Okay, so training is easily used for:

  1. Practicing execution (No setup needed)
  2. Finding guard breaks (Set dummy to block all or jam your p2 controller to a side, throw, otg xx snapout, attempt guard break)

What else can we use training mode for? Here’s some thoughts about things I’d like to learn but don’t know how to setup.

  • Figuring out what swich trick move beats what switch trick move
  • Figuring out guard breaks when the opponent takes the hit on the way in
  • Figuring out and practising alpha counter to super combo timing
  • Figuring out how to followup and assist kill after snapping out their point char and assist together
  • Figuring out how to followup and assist kill after killing their point with a super

Preferably without repeated Mixup stick stomping. How can I set these up?

no people at all to test things with?

thats the best way to use training mode, two people bouncing ideas and counters back and forth, waaaaaaaay more progress if you have that opportunity.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. What else can I use training mode, and HOW do I do it? How can I set up to try the things I listed, such as getting the opponent to call out an assist, or attacking so I can alpha counter, or taking the first hit on the way in and trying to block the rest , or blocking the first and pushblocking?

Maybe I should get another HRAP2, but it seems a waste to do so just to have P2 turbo mash Asisst A.

hell yea hours of random smart stuff in training mode with a buddy is the way to go, to be honest the way i make up alot of my tricks is by going into training mode picking i don’t know lets say magnus or IM, i do their basic infinites and sometimes ill fuck up and accidentally crossover all leet like. so than i take that fuck up and learn how to do it and how to apply it. ive come up with so much practical shit this way and i advise other people to do so. just go into training mode catch a basic scenario with a character like rom and just go fast!! see wtf comes out , sometimes some good mixup you aint ever even thought of will just show it self to you lol

For guard breaks when the opp takes the hit I think you can set the dummy to take a “first” hit and block if the hit after that doesnt combo. Check Auto-Block for that.

For the alpha counters set it on manual and use sent since his laser will hit from full screen. Tap, HP, Block the laser and practice timings.

For Snapping, put it on manual, call assist with 2p and at the same time hit 2p so it stops the assist from attacking. Snap and follow.

I dont have a console right now to test these but I think these should work.

put it in manual training to get around some of these problems.

turn your dc pad upside down and angle the analog stick on ur dc pad to block

these are some basic ways to get guard break/unblockable opportunities with accurate blocking properties

opp in corner

sent- fp throw, c.lpXXsnap

mag-fk throw,c.lkc.mpXXsnap

storm/psy, fk throw+psy, snap

cable can throw into helpers too, psylocke and sentinel are the first ones that pop into my head

standard way to test ur guardbreaks ect i guess

your other problems, i just tried out alot of different ways to use two controllers, you’d be surprised what you can test just by jumping around helpers and other basic shit. there is no program feature, you pretty much need somone to help you, or rig shit up so you can practice what you come up with in your head.

Finally

Finally people are understanding the point to the thread. It’s asking for other than the obvious… I guess it just needed a little spicing up with some advanced players. Good shi’t Josh, mixup and others who get the point of improving training mode. this is exactly the type of stuff people need. How to go to trainning mode and use it in an ADVANCED WAY instead of the useual magic series and crap. Because sadly, people use training mode one dimensionally.

I figured out ways to fix my my Strider in training mode.

  • I use the mixup upside down pad method to practice trap patterns and instant overhead set ups.

  • I use to use one of those toy vibrating land mine things and put it over the assist button so it can mash out cyclops and see if I have any holes in my trap. (damn toy broke now)

  • Lets not forget the old mashing out of tempest trick. Do tempest on pad, pause, take the stick, unpause with your foot, and mash like hell.

  • Let me not start with the unblockable set ups. Upside down pad holding back (not back down) then do lk, snak and practice. So easy.

Improvise people

SNAKE

So what you ACTUALLY meant to say was, “please teach my useless self what to do in training mode”?

yet another misread…

Because you don’t listen. You have to think outside of the box is what I mean. Obviously if you’re still saying something about this now, you don’t get it. People think of training mode for useless things like program paded combos and magic series.

And one sec,What’s this about “useless self”? I’m useless? I actually named a couple of techniques… What are you doing in this thread other than putting it and myself down? To me it looks as if you’re the useless one. See, this is what happens when people don’t listen.
Now please keep crap to yourself unless it’s useful.

Oh yeah, by the way Josh, I got the vids up.

Thank you,
SNAKE

Wait, people think that, or YOU think people think that?

Good for you, you actually managed to contradict yourself.

You’re right. You should check out my thread where I ask people what to do in training mode because as everybody knows, it’s practically useless.

it pretty much is useless if you are narrow minded in training mode like alot of people are because they dont have the oppoutunity to play people as much as others. i think he was trying to ask people to share the ways they use training mode to help people other than himself make more use of it.

He would have prevented a hell of a lot of debate if he had simply glossed over the fact that he thought training mode is useless. Saying so incites the people who think that it IS useful, and the people that agree with him won’t have any input anyway.

In any case, it’s good that he changed his mind about training mode, but he rubs me the wrong way.

Idiot…I don’t ask people what to do. The way the average joe conquers training mode is useless.
I didn’t contradict myself, what happened was that you didn’t get what I said and misunderstood the entire thread. Well, like J360 said, people in GENERAL not what I think people think. They tend to use it for other things that turn out virtually useless. Now I didn’t ask people in the thread what I’m suppose to do in training mode. I simply wanted people to discuss what methods they use. I opened up a discussion on the topic. I wasen’t asking for help for myself. You came up to your own conclusions.

It’s not my fault people debated, they chose to and I chose to end it, but here you are bringing up crap again which isn’t helping the thread. Say something useful or don’t say anything at all.

SNAKE

hahahahahahahhaa

excuse me you guys, 3s player coming through…

i once knew this guy who quit his job to play marvel as a pro, and then figured out a way to do all his programmed combos by hand.

now he wants to marry my cousin.

just thought I’d say.

piece out.

btw, I figure out stupid air grabs in training mode. I amaze all my friends. They’re good players and think its stupid, but they always get caught.

With the exception of magnetro of course, because his programed combos are God-like :wgrin:
